Deaf-dumb minor seven months pregnant after being raped for months in UP

Muzaffarnagar: A fifteen-year-old deaf and dumb girl was raped and impregnated by a 50-year-old neighbour in Wajidpur village of Jansath tehsil here, police said on Tuesday.

The arrested accused, identified as Rajpal Saini, raped the minor girl over a period of several months, said Station House Officer (SHO) Yogesh Sharma.

A case was registered and the victim has been sent for medical examination, the SHO said.

The incident came to light when the family members of the victim found out about her seven-month pregnancy, he added.

Meanwhile, irate villagers protested and demanded strict action against the accused.

A 40-year-old man allegedly raped a minor girl, who is speech and hearing impaired, in Chatra district of Jharkhand, following which he was severely beaten up by the local people, the police said on Wednesday.

The 14-year-old girl had taken cattle for grazing at Kendinagar under Rajpur police station limits on Monday when the alleged incident took place.

Chatra sub-divisional police officer Varun Razzak said she narrated her ordeal to her family members by using gestures on Tuesday. As the news spread, local people assaulted the accused, who is a resident of the same village.

The police rescued him and admitted him to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIIMS) in Ranchi, Razzak said adding that he was arrested.

The police also registered a case against 14 villagers for beating up the accused, Razzak said.

Hearing impaired minor raped by brother, his friends in Meerut

Four minors were booked for allegedly raping an eight-year-old hearing impaired girl in Meerut on Sunday, the police said. One of the accused was the girl’s 12-year-old brother.

According to AP Misra, inspector, Kanker Khera police station, the brother’s friends had been raping the girl for the last one month.

On Sunday, the girl was playing outside her house when the boys lured her with a toffee and took her to an abandoned house in the same neighbourhood. This time, the girl’s brother was also with them. They raped the minor and fled the spot when her condition deteriorated, inspector Misra said.

The girl somehow managed to reach home and narrated her ordeal to her parents through sign language and identified her brother as one of the accused. Her parents then took her to the police station and lodged an FIR in this connection, the inspector said.

During interrogation, the brother confessed to the crime and revealed to the police the names of his three friends, Misra said, adding that the girl, who cannot hear and speak, identified her brother and his three friends as being involved in the crime.

“We have arrested all the four accused, aged between 12 to 14 years,” he said.

The accused have been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said. They were produced before a juvenile justice court on Monday and will be sent to a juvenile home on Tuesday.

The girl has been admitted to a hospital for a medical examination and treatment, the police said.

“The accused had watched obscene videos before committing the rape. One of their friends had shown them explicit videos on his mobile phone which prompted them to commit the crime,” the police officer said.

They were from the underprivileged section of society and had easy access to obscene videos on mobile phone, inspector Misra said.

I have lost a mother, am an orphan now, says Geeta

A wave of condolences and mourning poured in a day after former foreign minister Sushma Swaraj died. Joining the long list of those who expressed shock and grief was Geeta, a deaf-and-mute girl who returned from Pakistan after accidentally landing in that country when she was a child who was brought back to India in 2015 after efforts led by Swaraj. According to Geeta, she feels like losing a shadow of her mother from her head.

Geeta, living in Indore, was anxious to go to Sushma Swaraj's funeral ever since she came to know about her death. "I am an orphan now'" said a grieving Geeta.

Sandeep, Geeta's symbolic translator, said, "Geeta considers Sushma Swaraj Ji as her mother. But now that she is no longer there, so she feels that her mother's shadow has disappeared." Sandeep also says that since Geeta received news of Swaraj's demise, she is not saying much.

Due to Swaraj's illness, Geeta was not able to contact her for a month. It was during this time that Swaraj entrusted the responsibility of Geeta to Union Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot.

On Wednesday, as soon as the warden told Geeta about the demise of Swaraj, she became upset. Geeta recalls being visited by Swaraj from time to time, the latest being five months ago in Indore. On Wednesday, Geeta paid tribute to her at 'Deaf Bilingual Academy' in Indore, during which she wept in front of her picture.

Sushma Swaraj had brought Geeta from Pakistan to Indore on 27 October 2015 while she was foreign minister. Geeta reached Pakistan after being separated from her family after which she was raised by the Karachi-based Edhi Foundation. Ever since bringing her back, Swaraj tried tirelessly to find Geeta's parents without success. Swaraj was also trying to get Geeta married.

உங்களுக்கு பேட்மிண்டன் விளையாட்டில் ஆர்வம் வந்தது எப்படி?

என் அப்பா கிரிக்கெட்டில் அதிக ஆர்வம்கொண்டவர். தேசிய அளவிலான போட்டிகளில் விளையாடி இருக்கிறார். அவரது நண்பர்களில் சிலர் பேட்மிண்டன் விளையாடுவார்கள். நான் 5-ம் வகுப்பு படித்தபோது, ஒருமுறை என் தந்தையுடன் மைதானத்திற்கு சென்றிருந்தேன். அங்கே எனது தந்தையின் நண்பர்களில் சிலர் ஒருபுறம் பேட்மிண்டனும், இன்னொரு புறம் கிரிக்கெட்டும் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருந் தார்கள். அதில் நான் பேட்மிண்டன் போட்டியை உற்று நோக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். இதனை என் தந்தை கவனித்தார். வீட்டிற்கு வந்த பிறகு என்னிடம் பேட்மிண்டன் விளையாட்டில் ஆர்வம் இருக் கிறதா என்று கேட்டார். ஆமாம் என்றேன். அன்று ஏற்பட்ட ஆர்வம் தான், இன்றுவரை குறையாமல் என்னை பல சாதனைகளை செய்யவைக்கிறது.

தொடக்கத்தில் உங்கள் விளையாட்டுத் திறன் எப்படி இருந்தது?

தொடக்கத்தில் நூற்றுக்கு மேற்பட்ட போட்டிகளில் கலந்து கொண்டு ஒரு பரிசு கூட வாங்காமல் இருந்தேன். ஆனாலும் நான் சோர்ந்துபோகவில்லை. என் தோல்விக்கு என்ன காரணம் என்று வீட்டிற்கு வந்ததும் ஆராய்வேன். முதலில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுடன் விளையாடாமல் சராசரி வீரர், வீராங்கனைகளுடன் விளையாடினேன். அதில் இருந்து பல நுணுக்கங்களை கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். ஒவ்வொரு போட்டியையும் வெற்றியாக மாற்றும் முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொண்டேன். அதன்பின்னர் வெற்றி என்வசப்பட்டது.

தினமும் எத்தனை மணி நேரம் பயிற்சி மேற்கொள்வீர்கள்?

விளையாட தொடங்கியதில் இருந்து சரவணன் என்பவர் தான் என்னுடைய பயிற்சியாளர். அவருடைய வழிகாட்டுதலின் படி தான் தற்போது வரை விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். காலை 5 மணி முதல் 8 மணி வரையும், மாலையில் 4 மணி முதல் இரவு 10 மணி வரையும் பயிற்சி மேற்கொள்கிறேன். தினமும் 9 மணி நேரமாவது பயிற்சி செய்கிறேன்.

உங்கள் குடும்பத்தினரை பற்றி..?

அப்பா, ஜெயரட்சகன் சுயதொழில் செய்து வருகிறார். அம்மா லீமாரோஸ்லின், இல்லத்தரசி. அண்ணன் ஆகாஷ் கல்லூரியில் படித்து வரு கிறார். நான், மதுரை மாநகராட்சி அவ்வை பெண்கள் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளியில் 10-ம் வகுப்பு படிக்கிறேன். எனது தாத்தா பாட்டி இருவரும் அரசு பள்ளியில் ஆசிரியர்களாக வேலை பார்த்தவர்கள். அதன் காரணமாக என்னையும் அரசு பள்ளியில் சேர்த்து விட்டார்கள். பள்ளியில் உள்ள அனைத்து ஆசிரியர்களும் எனக்கு உற்சாகம் தருகிறார்கள்.

நான் கொஞ்ச நேரம் படித்தாலும் நன்றாக புரிந்து கொள்வேன். அதனால், படிப்பு பற்றி எந்த கவலையும் கிடையாது. விளையாட்டு தான் கொஞ்சம் கஷ்டமாக இருக்கும். அதிலும் ஒரு கை பார்த்து விடுவேன். போட்டியில் இறங்கும் முன் அமைதியாக இருப்பேன். இறங்கி விட்டால் வெற்றி மட்டும் தான் இலக்கு. இந்தியா முழுவதும் உள்ள பல்வேறு நகரங்களில் விளையாடி உள்ளேன். மலேசியா, ஜெர்மனி போன்ற வெளிநாடுகளிலும் விளையாடி இருக்கிறேன். எல்லா போட்டிகளுக்கும் என்னுடன் என் தந்தையும் வந்து விடுவார். அவர் அருகில் இருந்து உற்சாகப்படுத்துவது எனக்கு கூடுதல் சக்தியை அளிக்கும்.

இந்திய அணிக்காக விளையாடிய அனுபவம்..?

2017-ம் ஆண்டு குஜராத்தில் நடந்த போட்டியில் கலந்து கொண்டு, இந்திய அணிக்காக தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டேன். மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் பிரிவில் தமிழகத்தை சேர்ந்தவர்களில் நான் மட்டுமே தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டேன். அது மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியான தருணமாக இருந்தது. இந்திய அணிக்காக விளையாடுவேன் என்று கனவில் கூட நினைத்து பார்க்கவில்லை. அந்த போட்டியில் கலந்துகொண்டு 5-வது இடத்தை பிடித்தேன். 2018-ல் நடந்த சர்வதேச போட்டியில் இந்திய அணிக்காக விளையாடி 2 வெள்ளி, 1 வெண்கல பதக்கத்தை பெற்றேன். தற்போது சீனாவில் நடந்த போட்டியில் தங்கப்பதக்கத்தை பெற்றதுடன், 2 வெள்ளி, ஒரு வெண்கலத்தையும் பெற்றிருக்கிறேன்.

என்னுடைய ரோல்மாடல் பி.வி.சிந்து. அவரை போன்று இந்திய அணிக்கு விளையாடி பெருமை சேர்க்க வேண்டும் என்பது ஆசை. அவருடைய விளையாட்டுகளை டி.வி.யில் பார்த்தால் அதனை முழுமையாக கவனிப்பேன். அவருடைய ஒவ்வொரு அசைவையும் முன்மாதிரியாக எடுத்துக்கொள்வேன்.

மறக்க முடியாத பாராட்டுகள்..?

சீனாவில் தங்கம் வென்ற என்னை நடிகர் விஜய்சேதுபதி நேரில் அழைத்து பாராட்டினார். அப்போது அவர் நீ இன்னும் நிறைய சாதிக்க வேண்டும். இந்தியாவிற்கு பெருமை சேர்க்க வேண்டும் என்றார். அது என்னால் மறக்க முடியாதது. அதுபோல், ஐதராபாத்தில் நடந்த போட்டியில் கலந்துகொள்ள சென்றபோது பி.வி.சிந்துவும் என்னை பாராட்டினார்.

உங்களின் அடுத்த இலக்கு..?

ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியில் இந்திய அணிக்காக விளையாடி தங்கத்தை பெற வேண்டும் என்பது தான் என் இலக்கு. அதை நோக்கியே பயணித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். ஒலிம்பிக்கில் தங்கம் வென்று தமிழகத்திற்கும் பெருமை சேர்ப்பேன். சர்வதேச போட்டிகளில் வெற்றி பெற்றால் சாதாரண வீராங் கனைகளுக்கு கிடைக்கும் மரியாதை எங்களுக்கு கிடைப்பதில்லை. மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் போட்டியில் சாதிப்பது என்பது பெரிய விஷயம். எல்லோரையும் சரிசமமாக பாராட்ட வேண்டும் என்பது தான் எங்களின் கோரிக்கை. ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும் என்னுடைய செலவு மட்டும் ரூ.8 லட்சத்தை தாண்டிவிடுகிறது. நான் மேலும் சாதிக்கும் விதத்தில் அரசு ஊக்கத்தொகை வழங்கவேண்டும்.

Ahmedabad: Tenant repeatedly rapes deaf and mute woman for 5 months

A 23-year-old differently-abled girl was allegedly raped by a 45-year-old tenant at her house in Amraiwadi, a complaint regarding the same was lodged on Friday.

The incident came to light after the victim's mother found she was pregnant.

According to police, the complaint was lodged by victim's mother, she stated in her complaint that she is a widow and has been living with her son and a differently-abled daughter, who is hearing impaired and mute. She had rented out the third floor of her apartment to the accused identified as Govindji Shekhawat,45, a native of Rajasthan. The accused was staying in the apartment for over a year.

Around three days back, when her daughter got ill, she took her to the hospital for treatment. During the treatment, the doctor told her that her daughter was four months pregnant. Regarding the matter, when the mother inquired, the daughter pointed towards Shekhawat. When Shekhawat was confronted regarding the matter, he broke down and confessed that he was raping her from the past five months, while she used to by alone.

After the incident, two day back Shekhawat fled from the spot. Regarding the matter, a complaint was lodged with the Amraiwadi police station against the accused and further investigation is on.

RT Udavat, inspector of Amraiwadi police station said, "After the accused fled from the spot, the parents approached the police and complained. Right now the accused is absconding and hunt for him is on. Primary investigation revealed that the accused was working in a private firm in Amraiwadi area only and soon he will be arrested in the matter."

As per police, victim's mother and brother were the only ones who could understand her signs. "Right now the victim is admitted in a hospital and her treatment is going on," Udavat added

Daad: A new start in education for hearing impaired

KOCHI: To many, a physical disability means they have lost the right to lead a meaningful and successful life. The buck stops at them being disabled! However, the very issues they had to face led two hearing-impaired women to join forces and launch a company that aims to provide quality, skill-oriented education for others like them. Digital Arts Academy for the Deaf (Daad) is an edu-tech product company founded by Remya Raj, 36, and Sulu A Naushad, 25.

According to Remya, who is the CEO of Daad, the company was registered in 2018 and started using a seed fund of Rs 1 lakh granted by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM). “Our company focuses on delivering accessible technical education to the 18 million-odd hearing impaired across India,” she said, adding many of them are under the age of 30.

“The hearing-impaired community has to cross many hurdles in order to live a full and productive life. However, not many are able to cross these hurdles. Hence, it becomes the responsibility of people like us who had the good fortune to jump through the hoops to help others,” said Remya, whose husband is also hearing impaired.

According to her, Daad is the first deaf startup in the country. “Both Remya and I had a very tough time while we were in college. The lecturers didn’t teach in sign language. So, it was difficult understanding lessons,” said Sulu, whose parents too are hearing impaired.

Startup founder: Even digital world is deaf-unfriendly

“Even the digital world is deaf-unfriendly. But it has a lot of opportunities! But a major roadblock for this is the lack of qualified educational resource specifically catering to the deaf community. We plan to bridge the divide by providing courses in IT subjects in Indian Sign Language (ISL),” she said. According to her, education programmes in ISL lower the entry barrier for hearing impaired youth, unlike any other medium.

Daad is in talks with Adobe in connection with designing courses to train hearing impaired in various applications like Photoshop and animation. “The courses are open to everyone. Students who have cleared Plus II and even those who have a job can come in and do a certificate course to make them more employable,” said Sulu.
