An afternoon of laughter, inclusion and shared celebration for the students of The Oral School for Deaf Children

The Oral School for Deaf Children turned 61 this year, and the milestone was marked with a celebration that perfectly reflected its mission of empowerment and inclusivity. Forty-three students, from toddlers to young adults, were welcomed into a vibrant world of fun and freedom at Jump-N-Joey, a trampoline and adventure park.

Founded in 1964 and located on Short Street, the school has long worked to create opportunities for children with hearing impairments, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The anniversary was not only about marking time, but also about reaffirming the belief that play and learning must go hand in hand.

From rope ladders and obstacle courses to the thrilling Spider Tower, the children embraced every challenge with unbridled energy. Teachers, too, joined in, proving that fun knows no age or limit. “Bar hearing, there is nothing that a child with a hearing impairment cannot do,” a teacher remarked — and the sight of students conquering each corner of the play zone made that truth evident.

The students expressed their gratitude in sign language during the cake-cutting to mark the school’s 61st anniversary

Play experts ensured safety while encouraging exploration, while staff members bridged gaps through sign language, making the experience seamless and warm.

சென்னை: குரூப் - 4 தேர்வு எழுதும் மாற்றுத் திறனாளி மாணவர்களுக்கு சென்னையில் இலவச பயிற்சி வழங்கப்பட்டு வருவதாக மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் ரஷ்மி சித்தார்த் ஜகடே தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

அனைத்துவகை மாற்றுத் திறனாளி மாணவர்களுக்கு தமிழ்நாடு அரசுப் பணியாளர் தேர்வாணையம் (டிஎன்பிஎஸ்சி) மூலம் கிராம நிர்வாக அலுவலர், இளநிலை உதவியாளர், தட்டச்சர் பணியிடங்களுக்கான ஒருங்கிணைந்த குரூப் 4 தேர்வு நடத்தப்பட உள்ளது.

இதையொட்டி தேர்வெழுதும் மாற்றுத் திறனாளி மாணவர்களுக்கு இலவச பயிற்சி வகுப்புகள் சென்னை கிண்டியில் உள்ள மாற்றுத் திறனாளிகளுக்கான சிறப்பு வேலைவாய்ப்பு மற்றும் தொழில்நெறி வழிகாட்டும் மையத்தில் நேற்று முன்தினம் முதல் நடைபெற்று வருகிறது.

21.04.2025 சிவகங்கை: அரசு பொதுத்தேர்வுகளில் காது கேளாத, வாய் பேச முடியாத மாணவர்களுக்கு குறைந்த பட்ச மதிப்பெண் வழங்கி தேர்ச்சி பெற வைக்க வேண்டும், என தமிழ்நாடு பட்டதாரி ஆசிரியர் கழகம் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளது.

சிவகங்கையில் பட்டதாரி ஆசிரியர் கழக மாவட்ட செயலாளர் கோவிந்தராஜூ கூறியதாவது:

உடல் இயக்க குறைபாடு உடையவர்களுக்கு 10ம் வகுப்பு அரசு பொதுத்தேர்வில் அவர்கள் சொல்வதை எழுதுபவர்கள் நியமனம் செய்யப்படுகிறார்கள். ஆனால் காது கேளாத, வாய் பேசாதவர்களுக்கு சொல்வதை எழுதுபவர் நியமனம் செய்ய இயலாது. அவர்களின் நிரந்தர ஊனத்தை கருத்தில் கொண்டு அவர்களுக்கு ஒவ்வொரு பாடத்திற்கும் குறைந்தபட்சம் தேர்ச்சி பெற தேவையான மதிப்பெண் வழங்க வேண்டும்.

பிறவியிலேயே சில மாணவர்கள் காது கேட்காமல் வாய் பேசாமலும் இருப்பதால் அவர்களுக்குச் சொல்வதை எழுதுபவர் போன்ற சலுகைகள் கிடைக்கப் பெறுவதில்லை. கூடுதல் ஒரு மணி நேரம் தேர்வு எழுத மட்டும் ஒதுக்கப்படுகிறது. இதனால் பயனில்லை.
காது கேளாதவருக்கு அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்து காது கேட்கும் கருவி பொருத்தப்படுகிறது. பெரும்பாலானவருக்கு அவ்வாறு பொருத்தப்படும் கருவி செயலிழந்து விடுவதால் எப்பயனும் கிடைக்க பெறுவதில்லை. மீண்டும் அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்வதின் அபாயம் கருதி பெற்றோர்களும் தயக்கம் காட்டுவதால் நிரந்தர குறைபாடாக காது கேளாமை உள்ளது. எனவே தமிழகம் முழுவதும் காது கேட்காத மாணவர்களுக்கு அவர்கள் தேர்ச்சி பெற தேவையான குறைந்தபட்சம் 35 சதவீதம் மதிபெண்கள் வழங்கிட வேண்டும் என்றார்.

காது கேளாதோருக்கு புது பாடப்பிரிவு துவக்கம்

20.12.2024, சென்னை:செவித்திறன் குறைந்த வாய் பேச இயலாத மாணவர்களின் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை மேம்படுத்த, தரமணியில் உள்ள சென்ட்ரல் பாலிடெக்னிக் கல்லுாரியில், புதிய பாடப் பிரிவு துவங்கப்படவுள்ளது.

இதற்காக அரசு, 50 லட்சம் ரூபாய் நிதி ஒதுக்கி உள்ளது. உயர்கல்வி துறை அமைச்சர் கோவி.செழியன் வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கை:

பற்றவைத்தல், மின்னணுவியல் பாகங்களைத் தொகுத்தல், மின்னணுவியல் பலகைகளை பரிசோதித்தல் ஆகிய திறன்களில் பயிற்சி அளிக்கும் வகையில், இரண்டு புதிய பாடப்பிரிவுகள் துவக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. பயிற்சி காலம் ஆறு மாதங்கள். இதில், 8, 10ம் வகுப்பு தேர்ச்சி பெற்ற, தகுதியான மாணவர்கள் சேரலாம்.

University Of Birmingham With Shakespeare Project Makes Shakespeare Accessible To Deaf Students In Schools

There are around 52,000 deaf children in the UK, many of whom are disadvantaged in the classroom. Deafness by itself is not a learning disability, but its effects can be compounded by factors such as non-inclusive practice or an inadequate linguistic environment.
Recent figures produced by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NCDS) show that British deaf students achieve, on average, a grade lower than their hearing peers at GCSE level. Attainment gaps in English and Maths are particularly stark with around 37.7% of deaf children achieving a grade 5 in both subjects compared with 51.9% of all children. According to the NCDS ‘deaf young people are being consistently failed by the education system’.

Shakespeare is a compulsory element of the National Curriculum in England, yet many deaf young people struggle to access his work. There are very few resources available to help Teachers of the Deaf in supporting their deaf students. As a result, some deaf students are excluded from the Shakespeare classroom, and hence from the study of GCSE English. Not only does this impact their future educational and employment prospects, GCSE English being a requirement of entry to most UK Universities, but also their social development, a Shakespeare is so heavily embedded in our cultural landscape.

‘Signing Shakespeare’ is a project designed to support deaf young people in their study and enjoyment of Shakespeare. The project aims to:

Create enjoyment and understanding of Shakespeare’s text
Develop pro-social, collaborative skills
Support social and emotional development
Build understanding of literary terms including iambic pentameter, antithesis, soliloquy
Offer role models for deaf young people
Increase deaf awareness and appreciation of how sign language can bring new ideas and interpretations to working with Shakespeare for all

Beginning as a research project between the RSC and the University of Birmingham, it has evolved into a programme consisting of active, rehearsal room-based resources for the study of Shakespeare’s Plays, supported by image-rich presentations. So far, we have completed a scheme of work for Macbeth. We began with this play as it is the most widely taught of Shakespeare’s plays.

All the resources are built around a series of films – key scenes from the play – performed by deaf actors, in British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (used in some classrooms where there are deaf students), and sometimes in a form of iconic, performative sign language, inspired by Bernard Bragg’s Visual Vernacular. The films add clarity to vital moments of the plot and inspire students to perform their own versions. With a generous donation from the Billy Rose Foundation in New York, we made the films for Macbeth in American Sign Language (ASL – making them accessible to the estimated 308,648 deaf or hard-of-hearing children between the ages of 5 and 17 in the US (US Census Bureau, 2018).

We trialled these resources in schools for the deaf and with Teachers of the Deaf in a range of educational settings – the response has been extremely positive. At Braidwood Trust School for the Deaf, the Head of English commented:

Pupils were all highly engaged. I was amazed with how much they remembered of the story. This is unusual for our pupils. I can see how this visual approach really helped pupils to recall details.

Another teacher, working at a deaf unit in a London school described the resources as ‘absolutely vital’, adding that they could make a real difference to his students’ educational experience.

The resources constitute a complete scheme of work for teaching the play. Our initial research suggested that closely following the chronology of the play as events unfold is crucial in building understanding of different perspectives, including the dramatic irony of what the audience know compared to what the characters know. Our activities invite young people to inhabit and explore those different perspectives and express their findings in sign, written and oral forms. Although the project is titled ‘Signing Shakespeare’, we are mindful of the many deaf children who do not use sign language. All our resources have subtitles, and we are also considering making filmed lip-reading versions of the scenes, since many deaf young people rely on lip-reading alongside other aids.

Having worked on Macbeth, we now hope to continue our work to produce resources for the other most frequently studied Shakespeare plays – Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest (TES, 2016). The principles and structure that we have developed can be applied to any number of the plays. They might also be applied to other literature on the curriculum – including prose and poetry.

With the introduction of the BSL Act of 2022, British Sign Language has been recognised by law as a language of the UK and the government has committed to its promotion and facilitation. Our hope is, that as a compulsory element of the UK education syllabus, Shakespeare will become fully accessible to users of BSL and other sign languages.

Innovations for inclusive learning showcased at NITI Aayog event

Twelve start-ups offering socially relevant solutions for inclusive learning presented their innovations at the Assistive Technology Innovation Showcase for Inclusive Education organized by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, in association with Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog.

The Assistive Technology Innovation Showcase for inclusive education organized by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education in association with Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog was held on January 19.

Young entrepreneurial minds are leveraging frontier technologies such as AI to create learning tools for autism, dyslexia, hearing and speech impairment, visual impairment, cerebral palsy.

The event was addressed by Subhas Sarkar, minister of state for education, Delhi. He highlighted the provision of NEP 2020 that mandates equitable and inclusive education so that every citizen has an equal opportunity to dream, thrive and contribute to the growth of the nation. He said schools are working to provide all children with special needs accommodation and support mechanisms tailored to suit their requirement, ensuring their full participation and inclusion in the classroom.

Abhay Jere, chief innovation officer, AICTE, stressed the need for innovation in the assistive tech space. He spoke about textbook conversion into Indian Sign Language (ISL) and the ministry’s innovation ecosystem taking forward assistive-tech innovations through incubation and acceleration support.

Manoj Kumar, founder of Social Alpha, said assistive technology for education should not only be considered as a social venture but a solid business model of its own and the same needs to be developed further.

Chapal Khasnabis, head of assistive technology, medical devices and diagnostics at WHO, highlighted access to assistive technology and global best practices and stressed how India can become truly inclusive.

A panel moderated by P.V.M. Rao of IIT Delhi and consisting of Anupam Basu, NIT Durgapur, Anil Prabhakar and Sujata, IIT Madras, discussed research and innovations and partnership required for inclusive education.

வேலைவாய்ப்பில் ஜொலிப்பு...

இதுவரை 25 ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறந்த பொறியியல் வல்லுனர்களையும், மேலாளர்களையும் உருவாக்கியுள்ளது கலசலிங்கம். இவர்கள் யாவரும் இந்தியா மட்டுமல்லாது உலகின் பல நாடுகளில் சிறப்பான பணிகளிலும், சொந்தத் தொழிலிலும் ஈடுபட்டுவருவது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

புதிய பாடப்பிரிவுகளாக ஃபோரின்சிக் சயின்ஸ் மற்றும் டேட்டா சயின்ஸ் இந்த ஆண்டு முதல் துவங்கப்படவுள்ளன. மேலும் வாய்பேசாத, காதுகேளாத மாணவர்களுக்காக, பி டெக் துறையில் சி எஸ் சி மற்றும் மெக்கானிக்கல் என இரண்டு புதிய பிரிவுகள், இந்தியாவிலேயே முதல்முறையாக ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கான பி.காம் படிப்பும் இந்தாண்டு முதல் துவங்கப்படவுள்ளது.

தன்னிகர் அற்ற தரம்...

NID Ahmedabad reports rise in applications from people with disabilities

India's premier design institute, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad has reported a rise in the number of applications under Persons with Disability (PWD) category. This year, NID received a total of 114 applications as against 78 last year. While the institute has roped in BM Institute of Mental Health to scrutinize the applications, they are also in talks to identify discipline-wise disability, to encourage such students.

As per the data shared by Professor Bhaumik Nagar, admissions chairperson, there has been an increase in the number of applications in the undergraduate and post-graduate courses. The institute received 82 for Bachelors of Design this year, as against 54 last year. As many as 32 students have applied for the Masters programme; NID had received 24 applications for the same last year.

Last year, the institute admitted seven students, with visual impairment, locomotor, hearing disability and disability due to blood disorder, to the M.Des course. For the B.Des course, five students with specific learning disability were admitted.

Pradyumna Vyas, Director, NID said: "Our teaching is focused on hands-on training and not bookish learning which is why students with disabilities prefer to join NID. While BM Institute of Mental Health has been of great help, by scrutinizing applications, we are currently in talks with them to understand disability-wise disciplines. We want to encourage such students to apply at NID. For example, if we get 50 partially blind students applying for animation or graphic design course, they will face difficulties. This is where the tole of BM Institute of Mental Health comes in place."

Madhu Singh, Director, BM Institute of Mental Health, said: "NID approached us last year to scrutinize fake applications and genuine ones. The PwD Act was enacted in 1995 which included only 7-8 kinds of disabilities whereas the same was revised in 2016 and 21 types of disabilities were included. Wherever we have doubt, we inform the institute to avail further documents of the applicants and then proceed with admissions. This year, maximum applicants suffered from learning disorder."

11.06.2016, கடலூர் மஞ்சக்குப்பத்தில் காது கேளாதோருக்கான அரசு சிறப்புப் பள்ளி செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. இப்பள்ளியில் எல்.கே.ஜி. முதல் 8-ம் வகுப்பு வரை சிறப்புப் பயிற்சி பெற்ற ஆசிரியர்களால் பாடம் கற்பிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இங்கு 3 வயதுக்கு மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்படுவார்கள்.

மாற்றுத் திறனாளிகள் நலத்துறையின் கீழ் செயல்படும் இப்பள்ளியில் கல்வி, உணவு, தங்குமிடம், சீருடை, கல்வி உதவித்தொகை, காதொலிக் கருவி, பேருந்து பயண அட்டை மற்றும் அரசின் நலத் திட்ட உதவிகள் வழங்கப்படும்.

தற்போது, 2016-17-ம் கல்வியாண்டுக்கான மாணவர் சேர்க்கைக்கு விண்ணப்பங்கள் வரவேற்கப்படுகின்றன.

25.07.2016, சிவகாசி அரசன் கணேசன் பாலிடெக்னிக் கல்லூரியில் கட்டணமின்றி படிக்க விரும்பும் மாற்றுத் திறனாளி மாணவர்கள் விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம் என கல்லூரி நிர்வாகம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து நிர்வாகத் தரப்பில் வெளியிட்டுள்ள செய்திக் குறிப்பு: சிவகாசி அரசன் கணேசன் பாலிடெக்னிக் கல்லூரியில் மாற்றுத் திறனாளிகளுக்கு இலவச மூன்றாண்டு டிப்ளமோ படிப்பதற்கு மத்திய அரசு சிறப்பு ஒதுக்கீடு செய்துள்ளது. அதனடிப்படையில் முதலாமாண்டு படிக்க விரும்பும் மாணவர்கள், சிவில் என்ஜினீயரிங், எலெக்ட்ரானிக்ஸ், கம்யூனிகேசன் என்ஜினீயரிங், பிரிண்டிங் டெக்னாலாஜி, மெக்கானிக்கல் என்ஜினீயரிங், எலெக்ட்ரிக்கல் மற்றும் எலெக்ட்ரானிக் என்ஜினீயரிங், கம்ப்யூட்டர் என்ஜினீயரிங் ஆகிய பாடப்பிரிவுகளில் சேர்வதற்கு விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம்.

சிறப்பு ஒதுக்கீட்டின் கீழ் விண்ணப்பிக்க விரும்புவோர், இதற்கான தனி விண்ணப்பத்தில் மட்டுமே விண்ணப்பிக்க வேண்டும். இந்த விண்ணப்பம் பாலிடெக்னிக் கல்லூரி அலுவலகத்தில் பெற்றுக் கொள்ளலாம். தபால் மூலம் பெற விரும்புவோர், சுய விலாசமிட்ட உறையில் ரூ.10க்கான தபால் தலை ஒட்டி விண்ணப்பிக்கலாம்.
