வாயுள்ள பிள்ளை மட்டுமல்ல, சைகை மொழி பேசும் பிள்ளையும் வழக்கில் வெல்லும் என நிரூபித்தவர் செவித்திறன் குறைபாடுடைய வழக்கறிஞர் சாரா சன்னி. உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தில் சைகை மொழியில் முதன்முதலில் சாரா வாதாட, சைகை மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர் சாராவின் வாதத்தை மொழிபெயர்த்த வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்புமிக்க காட்சி 2023 செப்டம்பரில் நிகழ்ந்தது.

அன்று சைகை மொழி தொடர்புமொழியாக மட்டுமல்லாமல் காதுகேளாதோரின் வாழ்வில் புது விடியலையும் கொண்டுவந்தது. ஒரு சராசரி நபரால் 0-25 டெசிபல் ஒலிகளைக் கேட்க இயலும். அதற்கு மேல் ஒலியைக் கேட்க இயலாமல் போகும்போது மென்மையான காது கேளாமையில் (26-40 டெசிபல்) தொடங்கி முழுமை யான கேட்டல் திறன் இழப்பு (91 டெசிபல்) வரை ஏற்படக்கூடும்.

காது கேளாதோரின் தந்தை

காது கேளாதோரின் அனுபவங்களைப் பிரதிபலிக்க கை அசைவுகள், விரல் அமைப்புகள், முகபாவனைகள், உடல் நிலைகள் ஆகியவற்றின் ஒருங்கிணைப்பால் உருவாவது சைகை மொழி. தனித்துவமான இலக்கணம், சொற்கள், வாக்கிய அமைப்பு (Syntax) ஆகியவை கொண்ட ஒரு முழுமையான மொழி அமைப்பு இது.

பேசும் மொழிக்கு ஏற்ப இலக்கண அமைப்பும் மாறுபடும், ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டின் சைகை மொழியும் தனித்துவமானது. ஆதிகாலத்தில், கைகளின் அசைவுகள், முகபாவனைகள் மூலம் தொடர்புகொள்வது மனிதர்களின் இயல்பான தொடர்பு முறையாக இருந்தது.

பொ.ஆ.மு. (கி.மு.) 5ஆம் நூற்றாண்டி லேயே சாக்ரடீஸ், கை சைகைகள் மூலம் காது கேளாதோர் தொடர்புகொண்டதைப் பற்றிக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். ஸ்பெயினில் மதகுருக்கள், மௌன விரதத்தின்போது பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட கைச்சைகை களை மாற்றி அமைத்து, காது கேளாத மாணவர் களுக்குக் கற்பிக்கத் தொடங்கினர்.

பின்னர், ஜுவான் பாப்லோ போனெட் 1620இல், உலகின் முதல் கை விரல் எழுத்துமுறை (manual alphabet system) குறித்த நூலை வெளியிட்டார். பிரான்சில், ‘காது கேளாதோரின் தந்தை’ என்ற ழைக்கப்பட்ட அப்பே சார்ல்ஸ்-மிஷேல் த லெப், காது கேளாதோருக்கான முதல் இலவச பொதுப் பள்ளியை நிறுவினார்.

சைகைகளைத் தொகுத்து அகராதி உருவாக்கி, இயல்பான சைகைகளுடன் இணைத்து அவர் கற்பித்தார். 1981இல் இந்திய சைகை மொழி அகராதி முதன்முதலில் வெளிவந்தது. பின்னர், 2011இல் இந்திய சைகை மொழி ஆராய்ச்சி - பயிற்சி மையம் நிறுவப்பட்டது.

கட்டாயமாக்கும் சட்டம்

காது கேளாதோரின் வாழ்க்கையில் கல்வி, வேலை, சமூக உரிமை, சுயநிறைவு ஆகியவற்றை உருவாக் கும் அடிப்படையாகச் சைகை மொழி உள்ளது. சைகை மொழி மூலம் கணிதம், அறிவியல் போன்ற பாடங்களைக் கற்பிக்கும்போது, கருத்து அடிப்படை யிலான புரிதல் மாணவர்களுக்கு மேம்படுகிறது.

காது கேளாதோருக்கு அரசுத் தகவல்கள், அறிவிப்புகள், சேவைகள் அனைத்தும் சைகை மொழியில் அணுகக்கூடியதாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்கிறது சட்டம்.

பள்ளி, கல்லூரி, அரசு அலுவலகங்கள், மருத்துவமனைகள், நீதிமன்றங்கள் என எல்லா இடங்களிலும் சைகை மொழி ஆதரவு வழங்கப்பட வேண்டும் என வலியுறுத்தப்படுகிறது.

அரசு விழாக்கள், நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் சைகை மொழி மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர்கள் இருப்பது கட்டாயமாக்கப் பட்டுள்ளது. அரசு, சில தனியார் ஊடகங்களும் சைகை மொழி விளக்கத்துடன் செய்திகளை ஒளிபரப்புகின்றன.

சவால்களும் வழிகளும்

ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு சைகை மொழிப் பயிற்சி வழங்கப்பட வேண்டும், ஊடகங்களில் சைகை மொழியின் பயன்பாட்டை அதிகரிப்பது, மக்கள் மத்தியில் விழிப்புணர்வை அதிகரிக்கும்.

A 19-year-old visually and hearing-impaired student from Lucknow has secured 98.75 per cent marks in the ISC Class 12 examinations, turning severe disability and medical complications into an extraordinary academic achievement..

Sarah Moin, a resident of Hussain Ganj in Uttar Pradesh, lives with both visual and hearing impairment and is also battling sarcoidosis, a rare disease that affects multiple organs. Despite these challenges, she emerged as one of the top performers in her school with a near-perfect academic record.

She scored 98.2 per cent in her best of five subjects. Her subject-wise performance includes 100 marks each in Geography and Mass Media & Communication, 98 in English, 97 in History and 96 in Psychology. She also secured an A grade in SUPW and Community Service, according to her scorecard.

Sarah studied at Christ Church College under Principal Rakesh Chattree and special educator Salman Ali Qazi. Her learning process extended beyond conventional classrooms, relying on tailored teaching methods, assistive communication systems and constant academic support.

She uses assistive technologies such as a braille display and Orbit Reader, which convert digital content into tactile form, enabling her to read, write and independently operate a computer. At home as well, she continues her studies using similar devices that allow her to engage with study material without assistance.

Teachers and classmates have often drawn parallels between her resilience and that of Helen Keller, frequently referring to her by the same name. The comparison reflects her determination in overcoming dual sensory impairment through education and perseverance.

Helen Keller was an American author, lecturer and disability rights advocate who overcame blindness and deafness to become one of the most influential voices for persons with disabilities worldwide. Her life continues to be cited globally as an example of overcoming severe sensory impairment through education and determination.

Sarah’s father, Moin Ahmad Idris, said her journey has been marked by consistent struggle against structural barriers faced by disabled candidates in mainstream and competitive education systems.

"She wants to become an IAS officer and work for people, especially disabled children," he said, adding that she received continuous guidance from her special educator and school authorities throughout her academic journey.

He also highlighted the difficulties she is likely to face while appearing for competitive examinations due to inadequate accessibility provisions for deaf-blind candidates.

"Despite her achievements, appearing in competitive examinations remains a major hurdle due to a lack of adequate accessibility provisions for deaf-blind candidates," Idris told.

He further urged examination authorities to permit greater use of assistive devices, arguing that traditional systems such as scribes do not adequately reflect the abilities of candidates like Sarah.

"In her case, a scribe cannot fully capture her answers. She needs accessible tools to express herself," he said.

Sarah had earlier scored 94 per cent in Class 10 examinations. She is now preparing for higher studies with the aim of joining the civil services and working for the welfare of disabled children, continuing a journey that has already become an example of determination and inclusive education.

Man gets life term for raping deaf, mute woman with mental disabilities

A 55-year-old man has been awarded life imprisonment by a special court in Rajasthan's Tonk district for raping a 20-year-old mentally challenged deaf-and-mute woman with locomotor disabilities. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh on the convict.

The verdict was delivered by the special SC-ST court of Tonk. The man, named Ramlal, worked as a commission agent at brick kilns, and the survivor's house was under construction at the time of the incident.

He committed the heinous crime when the survivor was alone at her residence. However, during the incident, the young woman's mother and sister, who were initially away, suddenly reached home.

After they raised an alarm, the family's neighbours rushed there and overpowered Ramlal. He was later arrested by the police.

The court relied on 16 witnesses, 33 documents, and 5 articles, presented by the prosecution, to reach its verdict.

Due to her severe physical limitations, the survivor was brought to the court in a wheelchair by her parents.

Judge Aarti Maheshwari of the Tonk SC-ST court read out a self-penned poem, inspired by the survivor's fight for justice, as she pronounced the quantum of punishment for Ramlal.

The court has also ordered compensation for the survivor. The case highlights the need for swift judicial process in addressing crimes against vulnerable individuals.

FIR registered against speech-and-hearing-impaired man for sexually harassing woman in Mumbai local train

Mumbai: An FIR has been registered against a 68-year-old man for allegedly sexually harassing a female commuter on a local train at Mulund on Tuesday. The 30-year-old woman, in her police complaint, said that the man was seated in the disabled coach, adjacent to the ladies compartment, and was masturbating. Police have served a notice to the accused, who is speech and hearing challenged.

On Tuesday evening, the woman was headed home from work and boarded a Thane-bound slow local from Dadar station. Seated in the ladies compartment, she was checking her phone. When the train reached Mulund, she put her phone away and looked around her. She noticed the accused seated in the adjacent disabled compartment, masturbating. Taken aback, the woman clicked a photograph of the accused as evidence. She got off the train at Thane station and complained to two male co-travellers. As she looked for police personnel on the station, the accused alighted from the disabled coach and left.

The woman lodged a complaint with Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), and the case was transferred to Kurla GRP as Mulund station lies in their jurisdiction. Police personnel scanned CCTV footage from stations between Dadar and Thane. Early on Thursday, they spotted the accused in the disabled coach of a CSMT-bound slow local. He was offloaded from the train at Bhandup station. They verified his identity with that of the photograph clicked by the complainant and brought him to Kurla GRP chowky.

Multiple students, both girls and boys, of an Odisha school have accused a male warden of physical and sexual harassment. Sandhya Darshan Mahapatra, warden at the Red Cross School for the Blind, Deaf, and Mute in Paramanandapur, Kalahandi, is accused of touching girls inappropriately and dragging them against their will.

Boys at the school say reporting such incidents led to harsh physical and mental punishment.

Footage and written complaints reportedly show the physically impaired students signalling distress through gestures. District authorities have formed a committee to probe the complaints.

In the videos, the warden is seen making inappropriate physical contact with a girl student, despite her clear discomfort. He touches her back and shoulder. In another image, he is seen touching a girl's arm in a secluded, dark corner of the school.

Kalahandi District Child Protection Officer Shailendu Mahapatra confirmed that complaints had been received and that a committee, headed by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM-General), was formed to investigate.

“We have received complaints against some employees regarding the harassment and sexual exploitation of children,” he told NDTV. “A report will be submitted to the District Collector, after which appropriate action will be taken. The preliminary investigation has been completed. If the allegations against the concerned individual are proven to be true, strict legal action will be taken according to the law. At this time, detailed information cannot be shared. The facts will only come to light after the final report is submitted by the committee.”

Man held for abducting hearing-impaired woman after police encounter in UP

Kannauj (UP), Jan 27 (PTI) A man accused of abducting a hearing-and-speech-impaired woman was arrested following a police encounter here on Tuesday, officials said.

The 20-year-old woman was safely rescued by the police.

The accused was identified as Lala Nat (40), a resident of Hariharpur under Sikandra police station in Dehat district, Kanpur. During the encounter, the accused was shot in the leg in retaliatory firing. He was then admitted to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Ajay Kumar, said a complaint was received on January 26 from the woman’s father alleging that his 20-year-old hearing-and-speech-impaired daughter was abducted by some men who came in a pickup loader when she had gone to collect fodder with her aunt.

Based on his complaint, a case was registered under section 87 (kidnapping) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against unidentified persons, the ASP said.

He said that on Tuesday, while police teams were conducting checks, a pickup loader coming from the Jainpur side was signalled to stop. The driver attempted to flee, following which police cordoned off the area.

Seeing himself surrounded, the accused opened fire at the police team with the intent to kill, prompting retaliatory firing in self-defence. The driver was hit in the leg and taken into custody.

Police said an illegal .315 bore firearm, an empty cartridge, two live cartridges, the Bolero pickup used in the crime and Rs 180 were recovered from the accused.

Kanpur: Police in Auraiya arrested a 55-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly raping a deaf-mute woman in the community toilet near a primary school under the Sahayal police station area of Achanakpur village.

After the assault, the woman returned home and told her family, who then took her to the Sahayal police station and reported the incident to the cops. In the complaint, the survivor's mother stated that her daughter went towards the fields on Friday morning when the accused, identified as Devi Dayal, caught her and took her to the community toilet built near the primary school and raped her.After receiving the complaint, Sahayal police registered a case against Dayal under relevant sections and began an investigation.

Sahayal Station House Officer Vinod Kumar said, "A case was registered based on the complaint of the girl's mother. The woman's medical examination is being conducted."

Hearing-impaired teacher sets up school for hearing-impaired kids in rural Odisha

Bhubaneswar: For children with hearing disabilities, schooling can be an uphill battle, especially when classrooms are not designed for them. At home, many grow up without any exposure to sign language, leading to delays in linguistic and cognitive development.

Growing up in a remote village in Subarnapur district, hearing-impaired Sibaji Panda understood this reality all too well. Despite going on to earn a masters degree from the University of New England and a PhD in special education, Panda carried with him a deeply personal mission to build a school for hearing-impaired learners led by hearing-impaired educators.

A decade ago, Panda quit his job as a senior lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire in the UK and returned to his village, Lakhanpur, with a dream of setting up a residential school for hearing-impaired children that would be truly inclusive, holistic and future-oriented. That dream took shape as 'Happy Hands'.

Today, Panda's institute is being lauded internationally. Unesco recognised Happy Hands as a unique and pioneering model of inclusive, bilingual and eco-centric education for hearing-impaired children in rural Odisha. The school was featured in Unesco's State of the Education Report for India 2025-'Bhasa Matters', published earlier this month.

"What makes our school unique is its bilingual approach and eco-education," Panda said.

Unlike most special schools where oral teaching dominates, Happy Hands ensures that Indian Sign Language (ISL) is used everywhere inside classrooms and in daily life on the campus. Panda established a sign-bilingual model, where ISL functions as the first language, providing a strong cognitive foundation for learning English as a second language.

"English is taught primarily as a written language, enabling children to grow up bilingual. We also started teaching Odia and Hindi as additional languages," explained Panda, who has been invited by President Droupadi Murmu to attend the 'At Home' reception on Republic Day.

All educators at Happy Hands are hearing-impaired teachers. Residential staff members who are not hearing-impaired are required to learn and use sign language to ensure that the environment remains genuinely inclusive.

Research and lived experience, he said, show that sign language plays a crucial role in developing independent thinking and strong cognitive foundations. "Most deaf children in India suffer cognitive setbacks due to language deprivation," Panda said. "When children grow up in families and communities where no one knows sign language, which is the case for the vast majority, they miss out on natural language acquisition during the most critical early years. This deprivation can have serious, long-lasting effects."

The school offers fully residential education from LKG to Class VIII. It admits only 10 to 12 children every year, and only in early grades such as LKG and UKG. Currently, around 70 children are enrolled, with the oldest students studying in Class VIII. All education, boarding and care are provided free of cost.

Education at the school, which runs entirely on voluntary funding, extends far beyond textbooks. Students participate daily in eco-campus activities such as gardening and engage in small design projects that are integrated into mathematics, science and art lessons. "We are starting eco-vocational training for older students this year," said Panda, who is a former vice-president of Indian Sign Language Interpreter Association.

பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணிற்கு ரூ. 5 லட்சம் இழப்பீடு வழங்கவும் நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவிட்டது.

அங்கு நாம் சென்ற போது, அங்கிருந்த 2 பெண்கள் உள்ளிட்ட 3 பணியாளர்கள், துணிகளை அயர்ன் பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். நாம் சென்றது அவர்களுக்கு தெரியாது. அவர்கள் துணிகளை நேர்த்தியாக மடித்து அழகாக அயர்ன் பண்ணிக் கொண்டு இருந்தனர்.

அப்போது அங்கு வந்த ‘நம்ம லாண்டரி‘யின் உரிமையாளரும், Deaf Leaders Foundation இயக்குநருமான முரளியிடம் நம்மை அறிமுகப்படுத்திக் கொண்டு பேசினோம். அப்போது அவர் நம்மிடம் சைகை மொழியில் பேசத் தொடங்கினார். அவர் பேசுவதை அவரது மகள் சினேகா நமக்கு மொழிபெயர்த்தார்.

இங்கு பணியாற்றுபவர்கள் வாய் பேச முடியாத, காது கேளாதவர்கள் என்பதால், வாடிக்கையாளர்களுடன் எவ்வாறு தொடர்பு கொள்கிறீர்கள்? என்று கேட்டோம். அதற்கு பதில் அளித்த முரளி, “எங்களுக்கும், வாடிக்கையாளர்களுக்கும் தகவல் தொடர்பில் இதுவரை எந்த பிரச்சினையும் இருந்ததில்லை. ‘நம்ம லாண்டரி‘க்கென தனி வாட்ஸ்ஆப் எண் வைத்துள்ளோம்.

“இந்த கிளையில், 5 பேர் முழுநேரமும், டெலிவரிக்காக ஒருவர் பகுதி நேரமாகவும் பணியாற்றி வருகின்றனர். ‘நம்ம லாண்டரி‘யின் 2-வது கிளையை கணுவாய் பகுதியில் விரைவில் தொடங்க உள்ளோம். தொடர்ந்து 3-வது கிளையை சூலூர் பகுதியில் திறக்க உள்ளோம். அந்த கிளைகளிலும், எங்களைப் போன்றவர்களுக்கு வேலைவாய்ப்பு அளிக்க உள்ளோம். எங்களுக்கு மக்கள் நல்ல ஆதரவு அளித்து வருகின்றனர்” என்று பெருமிதத்துடன் கூறினார்.

Deaf and mute girl molested, extorted of Rs 7.7 lakh

Rajkot: The Bhaktinagar Police arrested a man for allegedly molesting and extorting a 17-year-old deaf and mute girl who was forced to steal Rs 7.70 lakh cash which her parents had set aside for a relative's marriage.

According to the police, the ordeal reportedly began on Sept 27 when a neighbouring teenage girl lured the victim to a nearby garden. When she reached there, the girl introduced her to her boyfriend, who was an adult.

According to the police complaint, the boyfriend of the victim's neighbour molested the victim and took several objectionable photographs of her.

Despite being unable to speak or hear, the victim can read and write to some extent. The accused reportedly used written notes to threaten her, claiming they would share the photos with her relatives and circulate them on social media if she did not pay them.

The crime remained hidden for over two months until the girl's family prepared for a nephew's wedding held between Dec 4 and 6. The family set aside Rs 7.70 lakh for wedding expenses, but when they went to retrieve the cash, the cupboard was empty.

Upon being questioned, the victim used sign language to reveal the harrowing details of the garden incident, the harassment, and the subsequent extortion.

She explained that she was handing over the cash in instalments to stop the accused from shaming her family.

Investigating officer MM Sarvaiya said, "We arrested the accused who works as a labourer. Our primary focus now is the recovery of the extorted money. We are also examining the mobile phone used to take the photos to ensure they were not circulated online."

The accused was booked under the sections 308(2) and 61(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The police are also investigating the degree of involvement of the neighbour who allegedly acted as an accomplice.

Santa’s cause: Eateries bring Xmas cheer to deaf students

Noida: Ahead of Christmas, the city's restaurant community came forward to spread festive cheer among deaf children.

At least 50 restaurants in Noida and NCR, part of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), donated school bags and stationery to 150 students, aged between four and 17, of Noida Deaf Society on Tuesday.

The initiative, ‘Santa's Cause', encouraged restaurateurs to donate 10% of every food bill paid at their eateries in Dec. The pooled contribution was used to organise the distribution at the society's campus, where a brief Christmas celebration was also held.

Head of the NRAI Noida Chapter, Varun Khera, said the initiative was meant to ensure that children with hearing and speech disabilities are not excluded from festive experiences.
"Children look forward to Christmas because of the gifts associated with it. Through Santa's Cause, we wanted to share that happiness with these marginalised students," he said.Khera said the association is also looking beyond one-time donations. NRAI is also in talks with the school to provide employment to deaf students in the hospitality sector. "There are several roles where they can perform well with the right support. Our effort is to create inclusive employment opportunities and help integrate them into the workforce," he said.

Founder of the Noida Deaf Society, Ruma Rupa, said the students responded with visible excitement. "The children were thrilled. Many of them had never interacted so closely with people from the restaurant industry," she said. She added that the visiting restaurateurs took a tour of the society, spent time with the students and interacted with them through sign language and the assistance of teachers.

Noida Deaf Society works to educate and upskill deaf children and youth aiming to bring them into mainstream education and employment.

The organisation supports students through formal schooling, vocational training and life-skills development, with a focus on long-term independence.

Staff members said such visits help build confidence among students and expose them to possible career paths.

Healthcare workers overcome communication barrier to deliver baby of hearing and speech impaired woman at rural health centre in Kolhapur

Kolhapur: Six staffers, including a doctor, a health visitor, three nurses and an ASHA worker, delivered a healthy baby for a hearing and speech-impaired woman at the Kasba Sangaon's primary health centre in Kolhapur district on Dec 20. They overcame the challenge of communication without the presence of a sign-language expert by relying on clinical analysis and gestures. The woman was admitted in the afternoon, and she gave birth eight hours later, at 10pm on Saturday night.

At the PHC, which is at the grassroots level of the public healthcare system, such cases are a rarity. The 25-year-old woman's husband was physically challenged and could not assist staff with communication, nor were any of her relatives present. An ambulance brought her to the PHC after she went into labour.

"We were not able to understand what pain she was going through as she was not able to convey it. We relied on clinical analysis to find out how she was doing. We had to use actions to show her how to get into labour. We had to squat so that she understood how to squat; otherwise, the wrong position may have caused the delivery of the baby in the bathroom. The problem was that the pain was insufferable to her, which worried us.

She had no hearing aid to understand what we were asking," said Vasundhara Deshmukh, the medical officer who led the delivery.

Deshmukh was assisted by Uma Bothe, a health visitor, and nurses Vidya Bidkar, Urmila Mohite and Urmila Bhangre, along with ASHA worker Manisha Devadkar.

This was the speech and hearing-impaired woman's second delivery. During her first pregnancy, she had been referred to CPR Hospital Kolhapur, a tertiary care facility. This time, travel was inadvisable because the CPR Hospital is around 55 km away, nearly an hour's journey. At PHCs, normal deliveries are carried out, while complicated and high-risk cases are referred to sub-district or district hospitals, where c-sections are generally performed.

Farukh Desai, the district reproductive and child care officer of Kolhapur, said, "In the past 10 years of my service in Kolhapur district, I never came across such a case at the PHC level. The doctors at the PHC, from the start, provided the service of sonography, medicines, and all tests free of cost to the pregnant woman. We are going to screen the baby for congenital anomalies with the help of an ENT specialist, as many parents have doubts in mind that if any one of them is speech and hearing impaired, then their babies too may get similar impairment hereditarily. In such cases, we carry out cochlear implants so that the baby may grow up listening and thereby may speak normally."

Deaf and mute woman breaks 16-year silence, exposes serial sexual abuse, blackmail in Mumbai

A probe has revealed that the accused had similarly drugged and assaulted speech and hearing impaired women and threatened them into silence by blackmailing them with obscene videos, according to a police official

A deaf and mute woman's complaint about a sexual assault that took place 16 years ago in Mumbai has unmasked a serial predator, revealing a disturbing pattern of abuse and blackmail he perpetrated on several women from the community.

The accused was arrested on December 13 after the survivor broke her silence recently following the suicide attempt by one of the women he allegedly sexually harassed.

Disturbed by the suicide attempt, she confided in her friends during a video call about the assault that occurred in 2009.

According to the police, the survivor, a resident of the western suburbs, communicated in sign language during a video call with her friends and colleagues, who were part of a WhatsApp group, that the accused had drugged and raped her when she was a minor.

She also took her husband into confidence, and with support from Thane Deaf Association president Vaibhav Ghaisis, activist Mohammed Farhan Khan, sign language interpreter Madhu Keni, and a retired officer from the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities Divyangjan, the survivor approached the police.

The survivor, her husband and a few of her friends went to the Kurar police station, where her statement was recorded in camera, with Ms. Keni as interpreter, and the accused, Mahesh Pawar, was arrested a few hours later from Virar, a suburb in Palghar district.

Recalling the trauma she endured 16 years ago, the survivor said that a female friend had invited her to explore the city in July 2009 and took her to Pawar's home in Vakola, Santacruz, an official said.

The accused allegedly offered her samosas and some beverage to celebrate the female friend's birthday. The survivor said she was forced to have the drink, which Pawar had allegedly spiked, and after a while, her friend left her alone with him.

The accused allegedly overpowered and raped her, and later blackmailed her with the recorded video of the assault.

The trauma of assault stayed with her over the years, and the attempted suicide of another woman from the community, allegedly assaulted by Pawar, propelled her to come forward.

A probe has revealed that the accused had similarly drugged and assaulted speech and hearing impaired women and threatened them into silence by blackmailing them with obscene videos, a senior police officer said.

The accused allegedly shot obscene videos of several women, using which he blackmailed them and extorted money, gold and mobile phones, he said.

He allegedly forced women into participating in nude video calls with him and recorded these to threaten them, the official said.

"As per initial investigation so far, we have evidence of his abuse of seven women, but the number can increase to more than 24," the official told PTI.

While Pawar has been remanded in judicial custody, no other woman has come forward with a complaint against him as yet, he said.

Talking to PTI, Ms. Keni said all women who have survived abuse and harassment by Pawar want to lodge a complaint against him.

She claimed that the accused had extorted money from one of the women he abused, but did not return the sum even when she needed it for a medical emergency.

Man arrested for raping deaf-mute niece in Samastipur

Patna: Police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly raping his deaf and mute teenage niece in Samastipur district.

According to the complaint, the incident took place on Dec 15 when the survivor was sent to fetch a spade from the fields. The accused allegedly intercepted her, took her to his house and raped her.

The teenager managed to escape and informed her family about the assault through gestures. She later went to the police station accompanied by her relatives and lodged a complaint.

Following the arrest, both the survivor and the accused were sent for medical examination. Police said further legal proceedings are underway.

Deaf and mute woman registers complaint six years after sexual assault in Mumbai

Mumbai: Six years after a deaf and mute woman was drugged and sexually assaulted, she registered a police complaint after getting support from her husband. Kurar police arrested the accused and transferred the case to Vakola police as it occurred in their jurisdiction.

The victim was a minor when the incident occurred in SAFETY HEALTH GURU 2009. She attended a friend's birthday party when the accused saw her. Later, one of her friends took her to his house. The accused offered her a spiked beverage and sexually assaulted her after she passed out. When the girl came to, she found that she was bleeding. She told her family but did not get enough support to lodge a complaint until now.

After arresting the accused, the police seized his phone and found that it contained inappropriate videos of several women. Police suspect he filmed these women over video call, without their consent, and subsequently blackmailed them.

Further police investigation is ongoing, and police are trying to reach out to other victims to record their statements.
