Army Officer's Hearing Impaired Daughter Diksha Sagar is India's Olympic Probable

New Delhi: An 18-year-old girl, with total hearing impairment has made her Indian Army officer father proud by being one of the probables for next year's Tokyo Olympics in Golf.

If she qualifies for the Tokyo Games, Diksha Dagar could be the first specially-abled sportsperson from India to compete in the Olympic Games.

The Colonel's daughter, who stands at the 56th position in Olympic rankings, is at present going through qualification rounds for the biggest international sporting event.

Earlier this year, Diksha, a left-handed golfer, became the youngest Indian woman to win the Ladies European Tour in South Africa. Ace golfer Aditi Ashok is the only other Indian female to have won the tournament.

"Diksha's ranking is good at this point of time. She has a number of competitions lined up before the Tokyo Olympics. Given her performances, she will improve her rankings. It is almost certain she will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics," her father Colonel Narinder Dagar told IANS.

Diksha -- a Class 12 Commerce student of DPS (Dhaula Kuan) in New Delhi -- won her first major tournament at the Ladies Amateur Open Championship in Singapore in 2018.

In 2005 when Diksha was around five years old, she underwent a surgery for a cochlear implant in her left ear that gave her the boon of partial hearing.

"Till the age of five, she was totally unable to speak either because she could not hear. It was a great joy for her when she was able to hear partially following the cochlear implant. Nevertheless, it is always a great challenge for a sportsperson to perform and compete without one of the five senses. She has never let her disability come in the way of her ambitions. She is good in studies too despite her limitations and professional commitments," added Colonel Dagar.

Belonging to an Army background, Diksha was exposed to a lot of outdoor activities including sports since her childhood. She began playing golf at the age of around six years in the cantonments of Dimapur (Nagaland) and Mhow (Madhya Pradesh) where her father was posted. Her father was her first coach and provided her with the initial knowledge of the game.

In the initial years, Diksha took to a number of physical activities including swimming, cycling, skating and riding but zeroed down on golf at the age of 11 when her father moved to national capital following a transfer.

"Diksha went on to win almost every major under-15 golf tournament in India thereafter," added Colonel Dagar.

In 2015, she won the Eastern India Ladies & Junior Girls, Faldo Series India. The very next year, she won the Chandigarh Ladies & Junior Girls Championship, Faldo Series India Championship, Western India Ladies & Girls Championship and the Eastern India Ladies & Junior Girls.

In 2017, she won the Telangana Ladies & Junior Girls Championship, the Northern India Ladies & Girls championship and the Western India Ladies & Girls Championship. Diksha also won her first professional event at the Hero Women's Pro Golf Tour in 2017.

2nd Deaf World Tennis Championships: Prashant Enters Quarter-Finals

15.10.2019.  Prashant Hamsabhavi, a hearing impaired tennis player, from Mysore Tennis Club, Mysuru, representing India in the 2nd Deaf World Tennis Championships being held at Antalya, Turkey, has on Sunday entered the Men’s Doubles quarter-finals teaming up with India’s Prithvi Shekar.

In Men’s Singles event, Prashant bowed out in the first round but, however, is still in fray for the consolation prize.

Deaf driving poses no risk, proves hyderabad city youth

Hyderabad: September 26 is celebrated as Day of the Deaf every year. This day is very special for Manikanta from Moti Nagar, Hyderabad. Annapragada Manikanta is a hearing-disabled person and the first Indian to receive driving licence from the Telangana government in 2017. Interestingly, Manikanta being the professional in graphic designing is the one who designed logo for the vehicles driven by the hearing-impaired for the Telangana government.

Speaking about the driving experience in Hyderabad, Manikanta said, "Driving is easy, if we have confident in ourselves and I drive comfortably on Hyderabad roads using side mirrors. I have never been an undisciplined driver and always follow traffic rules. Till date, I have not faced any problems and feeling great after driving several kilometers alone so far, I become comfortable in driving, my family and people around are very cooperative and supportive and they always cautions me to drive safe."

He, however, expresses disappointment that when several deaf people approach for driving licence, officials are sending back them claiming that they have no knowledge about the government order to provide licences in such cases. He urged deaf people to carry a copy of GO while giving the driving test, so the officials will not object to them. He says it is due to support from his parents, VaraLakshmi and Sivarama Prasad, that he is able to drive on roads. "Though I faced several challenges, I made myself strong and confidently started moving ahead in life as it was my dream to ride and be successful like all others. It's been two years and have been driving safely every day."

Speaking about designing the logo for the hearing impaired people vehicles, Manikanta informs, "I gave eight designs for the TS government, of which one was picked up which will be displayed both on the front and the rear sides of vehicle. The logo signifies that the 'Driver is deaf, please pay attention.' It is a way to spread awareness and avoid accidents and request other people to cooperate." "I began drawing and turned professional in 2007 after completing a course in fine arts with a senior artist and I completed animation courses at Ni-MSME and began working in 2010. At present, I am working as a background animator for a company. So, designing a logo was an easy task for me and also it was a good opportunity to help so many others like me. It was a priceless happiness to fulfil dreams of hearing impaired being able to drive on roads," he added.

2 arrested for raping deaf and mute woman in Mumbai

20-year-old man and his friend have been arrested for allegedly raping a deaf and mute woman in Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.

According to a police official, the accused, who were arrested on Monday, have been identified as Lakhan Kaale and his friend Sandip Kurhade (22), both residents of adjoining Thane.

The victim (25) worked as a maid in a residential society in upscale suburb of Bandra (East), he said.

On Sunday afternoon, she suddenly disappeared after she went out of the housing society, the official said.

When she did not return, her employer informed her parents who reside in Virar, a distant suburb of Mumbai, and they lodged a missing person complaint with the Kherwadi police station, he said.

However, the woman's mobile phone was active and it showed her location in Thane, the official said, adding on Monday, she was found at the Dadar railway station along with Kurhade.

The woman told the police in writing about her ordeal after which Kurhade was taken in custody, he said.
During interrogation, it came to light that the woman was raped in a room in Thane, the official said, adding the police later picked up Kaale, too, from the adjoining city.

Kurhade revealed he met the victim via a common friend and on Sunday he took her to his home in Thane to introduce her to his parents as he wanted to marry her, he said.

But when Kurhade's parents denied him permission to marry the woman, he asked his colleague Kaale to drop her to her workplace in Bandra, the official said.

However, Kaale took the woman to a room in Thane and allegedly raped her, he said.

When Kurhade came to know about the crime, he reached the spot and took the victim with him to drop her at her workplace in Bandra, but was arrested when they reached Dadar, the official said.

An FIR under IPC sections 366 (kidnapping or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 376 (rape) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) was registered against both the accused, he said.

On Tuesday, they were produced before a court which sent them in police custody till October 15, the official added.

அஹமதாபாத்தில் காது கேளாத, வாய் பேச முடியாத பெண் ஒருவரை பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை செய்த மாற்றுத்திறனாளி இளைஞர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

குஜராத் மாநிலம் அஹமதாபாத் அருகே உள்ள அம்ராய்வாடி என்ற பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த காது கேளாத, வாய் பேச முடியாத 23 வயது பெண் ஒருவர் கடந்த ஞாயிறன்று வீட்டிலிருந்து காணாமல் போயுள்ளார். இரண்டு நாட்களாக அந்தப் பெண்ணை அவருடைய குடும்பத்தினர் தீவிரமாகத் தேடி வந்துள்ளனர். இந்நிலையில் அதே பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த மங்கேஷ் பரத்வாஜ் என்னும் மாற்றுத்திறனாளி இளைஞர் தனது 3 சக்கர வாகனத்தில் அந்தப் பெண்ணை அவருடைய வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்து வந்துள்ளார். அங்கு பெண்ணின் குடும்பத்தினரிடம் அருகிலுள்ள மைதானம் ஒன்றில் அந்தப் பெண் இருந்ததாகவும், தான் அவரைப் பார்த்து அழைத்து வந்ததாகவும் கூறியுள்ளார்.

ஆனால் அந்தப் பெண்ணின் ஆடைகள் கிழிந்தும், கறைபட்டும் இருந்ததைப் பார்த்த அவருடைய குடும்பத்தினருக்கு மங்கேஷின் நடவடிக்கையில் சந்தேகம் வந்துள்ளது. இதைத்தொடர்ந்து மங்கேஷ் கூறிய மைதானத்திற்கு அவரையும் அந்தப் பெண்ணையும் அழைத்துச் சென்ற குடும்பத்தினர் அங்கிருந்த ஒருவரிடம் தங்கள் பெண்ணை காட்டி, இவரை இங்கு பார்த்திருக்கிறீர்களா எனக் கேட்டுள்ளார்கள்.

அதற்கு அவர் 2 நாட்களுக்கு முன்னால் மாற்றுத்திறனாளி இளைஞர் ஒருவர் அந்தப் பெண்ணை அங்கு கூட்டி வந்ததாகக் கூற, பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணின் குடும்பத்தினர் மங்கேஷிடம் தீவிரமாக விசாரித்துள்ளனர். அதில் மங்கேஷ் அந்தப் பெண்ணை பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை செய்தது தெரியவந்துள்ளது. இதைத்தொடர்ந்து அவர்கள் அளித்த புகாரின் அடிப்படையில் வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்துள்ள போலீஸார் மங்கேஷைக் கைது செய்துள்ளனர்.
