Dejected over the hearing impairment of both her sons, a 24-year-old woman smothered her 2-year-old younger kid and committed suicide in Porur on Friday.
Ashwini smothered Sakthivel with a pillow and committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling at her house. Ashwini’s first son Pradeep, 4, also a hearing impaired, is undergoing speech therapy after surgery at a private hospital.
On Friday, Ashwini, a home maker, asked her husband Mahesh, a painter, to leave Pradeep at her parents' house in Mangadu.
When Mahesh returned home around 1.30pm, he found the door locked from inside.
When repeated knocks went unanswered Mahesh broke open the door and found Ashwini hanging from ceiling and Sakthivel lying unconscious on the bed.
He took them to a private hospital with the help of neighbours.
Doctors at the hospital declared the two brought dead. Their bodies were sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
Mahesh and Ashwini were married for over six years and they spent a large sum on medical expenses of Pradeep who was born speech and hearing impaired.
However, the couple found that their second son Sakthivel too did not respond to calls and took him to a doctor.
When they were told that Sakthivel also suffered from the same problem, Ashwini was dejected for the last few days.
The SRMC police have registered a case. An inquiry has been ordered.
