Kolkata, Nov 10 (UNI) In order to help deaf impaired communicate like their normal brethren, digital solutions as a solution were introduced at Assistive Technologies Conclave & Expo at IISF held in Kolkata from November 5 to 8.
Two deaf brothers Apoorv Om and Ayush N Chandra have come out with an innovative idea called DSFIE (Digital Setup For Inclusive Education) for the aid of hearing impaired which was unveiled at the expo.
Apoorv Om, a young deaf activist from Delhi who advocates for inclusion of disabled into mainstream said in a speech at the expo, "Due to this Assistive technology sign language may not be required to learn to communicate with Deaf. One more most important thing is that it is not necessary that all deaf are Dumb also, but by teaching them sign language we are making them dumb".
Apoorva noted that digital solutions are a miracle in itself as they help the disabled and the normal students grasp the same lessons in the same classroom from the same teacher without interpreters or sign language.
The Conclave was graced by Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan, who appreciated Apporv Om's work and recognised his speech at the event.
Apoorv Om was honoured with UNESCO Youth Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals award and invited to deliver the Second International Conference on Youth Volunteering & Dialogue at UNESCO’s Headquarters. Om was also awarded India's National Award for Persons with Disabilities in 2017.
