திருப்பூர் மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் அலுவலகத்தில் நேற்று பொதுமக்கள் குறைதீர்க்கும் நாள் கூட்டம் நடைபெற்றது. இந்த கூட்டத்திற்கு மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் கே.எஸ்.பழனிசாமி தலைமை தாங்கி, பொதுமக்களிடம் இருந்து மனுக்களை பெற்றுக்கொண்டார். அப்போது வெள்ளகோவிலை சேர்ந்த பொன்னுச்சாமி என்பவர் ஒரு மனு கொடுத்தார்.

அந்த மனுவில் அவர் கூறியிருப்பதாவது:–

வெள்ளகோவில் திருவள்ளுவர் நகரில் எனது மனைவியுடன் வசித்து வருகிறேன். கூலி வேலை செய்து வருகிறேன். எனது மகன் அருண் (வயது 19), காதுகேட்காத வாய்பேச முடியாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளி. தடகள வீரரான இவர் திருப்பூரில் உள்ள காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளியில் பிளஸ்–2 வகுப்பு வரை படித்து முடித்தான்.

இதில் தேர்ச்சியடைந்த உடன் மேலும் படிக்க விரும்பினான். இதனால் சென்னையில் உள்ள ஒரு ஐ.டி.ஐ.–ல் விடுதியில் தங்கியிருந்து படிக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்து, அங்கு எனது மகனை சேர்த்தோம். இந்நிலையில் அருணுக்கு உடல்நிலை சரியில்லை, அழைத்து செல்ல வருமாறு சென்னையில் இருந்து அழைப்பு வந்தது. அதன்பேரில் சென்னைக்கு சென்றோம். அப்போது ஊருக்கு செல்வதாக அருண் கூறிக்கொண்டு சென்று விட்டதாக தெரிவித்தனர்.

அதன்பேரில் வீட்டிற்கு வந்து பார்த்தோம். ஆனால் என் மகன் இங்கு வரவில்லை. இது தொடர்பாக சென்னை போலீசில் புகார் கொடுத்தோம். போலீசார் இது தொடர்பாக வழக்கு பதிவு செய்துள்ளனர். ஆனால் 6 மாதமாகியும் இதுவரை சென்னையில் மாயமான என் மகனை கண்டுபிடித்து தரவில்லை. எனவே எனது மகனை மீட்டு தர வேண்டும்.

When you take a seat in the newly opened Ishaara in Lower Parel, you’ll be greeted by some beautiful tropical tree illustrations, warm and cosy atmosphere and a server saying ‘hello’ in sign language to welcome you. Run by speech and hearing impaired staff, Ishaara is just like any restaurant, but in order to communicate with your server, you’ll have to use gestures instead of words. Inspired by a restaurant in Canada, which employed the same concept, co-founders Prashant Issar and Anuj Shah decided to try the same in Mumbai and are now on their third restaurant.

Prashant believes that because of their disability, the speech and hearing-impaired people are perfect for the job, he says, “We’ve realised over time that these boys and girls have the attributes for hospitality, attributes like they smile more, have more focus, are intuitive and friendly. So these are attributes that will make anyone hospitable so it’s a no-brainer to give them the rightful place in an industry where we all aspire to be warm and friendly and welcoming to our customers.”

One look at the menu and you’ll understand how to place your order with a server who doesn’t communicate in the same language as you. “The menu is quite simple, every section of the menu has the hand sign and every dish has a corresponding number sign. So you just have to sign the top section with the corresponding number of the dish and the server will take your order.” For example, if you want to order some sides, the sign would be like an arrow with the right index finger on the tip of the left index finger and for Tawas and stir fry section you simply need to interlock your fingers. These gestures are not actual signs but simplified codes to make it easier for the customers as well as the servers. “The sign language doesn’t have specific signs for ‘starters’, ‘main course’, ‘entrees’. So what we have done is, for instance, the Tandoor section has the sign for the letter T, while for the salads and soup section, we used the sign for the letter S. For desserts, they have a proper gesture in sign language, so we’ve put that sign there,” says Prashant.

Prashant and Anuj, who have been trained in sign language, decided to learn it in order to make their employees feel comfortable. Prashant says, “When we started meeting these boys and girls, we realised they all wanted to work, but their parents were hesitant. Every parent is quite possessive about his or her child and if their child has limitations, they become all the more possessive, as they don’t want their children to be exploited. So to convince them we first learned the sign language, to be able to communicate with the potential employee, and through them, convince the parents.” The founders were introduced to the speech and hearing impaired servers through Cheshire Homes and Youth4jobs, two organisations who are working towards employing to disabled.

With expertise in Indian cuisine, the menu revolves around desi dishes, elevated to match the palate of Mumbaikars. “The cuisine we are focusing on is Indian, from different parts of the country and the idea is to keep it simple, unpretentious and regional.”

The three-week-old restaurant is already gaining popularity among the locals. Recalling a heart-warming story, Prashant says, “There was a group where a couple of customers knew sign language completely and they were able to communicate with the servers themselves.”

அவர்களுக்கு மருத்துவ காப்பீட்டுத்திட்டத்தின் கீழ், இலவசமாக காக்ளியர் இம்பிளான்ட் எனப்படும் நவீன கருவி, அறுவை சிகிச்சை மூலம் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்த கருவியானது செவித்திறனை அதிகப்படுத்தக்கூடியது என்றும், குளிக்கும் போதும், தூங்கும் போதும், தனியே எடுத்து வைத்துக்கொள்ளக்கூடியது என்றும், மருத்துவர்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

உலகின் 'காது கேளாத அழகி’...! முதன்முறையாக பட்டம் வென்ற இந்தியப் பெண்

திறமை இருந்தால் எதுவும் சாத்தியமாகும் என்பதற்கு இதைவிட சிறந்த உதராணம் வேறு என்ன இருக்க முடியும்..? அழகு என்ற ஒற்றைத் திறமையைக் கொண்டு தன்னிடம் இருக்கும் குறையை முறியடித்திருக்கிறார் 21 வயது விதிஷா பாலியன் (Vidisha Baliyan).

என்னுடய வெற்றிக் கைத்தட்டல்கள் எனக்கு கேட்கவில்லை என்றாலும்.. என்னுடைய சாதனையை உலகமே கேட்கச் செய்துவிட்டேன் என்ற பெருமைக்கு சொந்தக்காரியாக வெற்றி கண்டிருக்கிறார் விதிஷா. அதுவும் இந்தியாவில் முதன்முறையாக இந்த பட்டத்தைப் பெறும் முதல் பெண் என்ற வரலாற்று தடத்திலும் பெயர் பதித்துள்ளார்.

உத்திர பிரதேசத்தின் முசாஃபர் நகரைச் சேர்ந்த விதிஷா குழந்தைப் பருவத்திலிருந்தே காது கேட்காத குறைபாடோடு வளர்ந்துள்ளார். வலது காது 90 சதவீதம் கேட்கும் திறனை இழந்துள்ளது. இடது புறம் முற்றிலுமாக காது கேட்காது.

இந்நிகழ்ச்சி சவுத் ஆப்ரிக்காவில் போம்பெலா (Mbombela) என்ற இடத்தில் நடைபெற்றுள்ளது. இதில் 16 நாடுகளைச் சேர்ந்த காது கேளாத அழகிகள் கலந்து கொண்டுள்ளனர். இறுதியாக 11 பேர் கடைசி சுற்றுக்குத் தேர்வானதில் இந்தியப் பெண்ணான விதிஷா ’உலகின் காது கேளாத அழகி 2019’ ( Miss Deaf World 2019) என்ற பட்டத்தை வென்றுள்ளார்.

இவருக்கு அழகால் மட்டும் வெளிச்சம் கிடைக்கவில்லை. டென்னிஸ் வீராங்கனையாகவும் இருக்கிறார். உலக அளவில் பல போட்டிகளில் பங்குபெற்று பல பதக்கங்களை வென்றிருக்கிறார். ஆக.. விதிஷாவிற்கு இந்த வெற்றி புதிதல்ல என்றே சொல்லலாம். அதேபோல் காது கேளாதோருக்கான ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டியில் இந்தியா சார்பாக பங்கேற்ற ஒரே பெண் இவர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

கடந்த பிப்ரவரி மாதம்தான் விதிஷா இந்தியாவின் காது கேளாத அழகி என்ற பட்டம் பெற்றிருந்தார். பட்டத்தை தனதாக்கிய விதிஷா உரையாற்றியபோது “ இந்த நொடி..என்னுடைய கண்ணீரைத் தவிற வேறெந்த வார்த்தைகளும் சிறப்பானதாக இருக்க முடியாது. என்னுடைய கடின உழைப்பு, வலி, காலையில் சீக்கிரம் எழுவது, கடுமையான பயிற்சி இவை எதுவும் வீண் போகவில்லை. எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் இன்று வெற்றி கிடைத்துள்ளது. அதுவும் இந்தியாவின் முதல் பெண் என்கிற பெருமை மகிழ்ச்சியை இரெட்டிப்பாக்குகிறது. கடவுளுக்கு என்னுடைய நன்றிகள்” என்று பேசியுள்ளார்.

Tamil Nadu Girl Wins Gold In World Deaf Youth Badminton Championship

Jerlin Anika, 15, has recently won gold medal at the World Deaf Youth Badminton Championships, Taiwan. She has also bagged two silver and one bronze medal in the championship, ANIreported. “When my eight-year-old daughter started showing a liking towards badminton, I thought the sport will distract her from her hearing impairment. I never thought that she would reach this level,” said J. Jeya Ratchagan, a proud father of the badminton champion, The Hindu reported.

Jerlin hails from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and is coached by T. Saravanan from the state. She is hearing-impaired which poses difficulties in playing badminton but she has learnt to use it to her advantage. She has been proving her mettle at earlier games and competitions, and hopes to triumph at the next challenges as well.

She won gold and two silver medals in the doubles and mixed-doubles events in the Under-18 category.

According to her father, the journey for Jerlin was not easy. “Initially when she started playing for the normal category, she lost a considerable number of matches. The umpire would shout out the points and Jerlin would not be aware of it,” says Ratchagan.

Saravanan started teaching Jerlin through drawings on a slate. “During the intervals between the match, I would draw a model of the badminton court and explain her mistakes. Through continuous practice, now Jerlin remembers the scores and does not cast a glance at the umpire throughout the game,” says Saravanan.

Jerlin has numerous medals in her name including two silver medals and a bronze at the 5th Asia Pacific Deaf Badminton Championship held in Malaysia in 2018. In the 2017 she secured the fifth place despite being the youngest player in Deaflympics held at Turkey.

But, Jerlin had used it to her advantage by not getting distracted to other noises,” adds her coach.

“Similar to other players, the hearing-impaired players also represent the country. Hence, we request the State government to financially support these players,” says Ratchagan.

Jerlin is now aiming to clinch gold medal in the 2021 Deaflympics.

Vidisha Baliyan is first Indian to win Miss Deaf World 2019 crown

Faith can move mountains, and it can’t be more apt than in Vidisha Baliyan’s case. The 21-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar city has become the first Indian to win the Miss Deaf World 2019 crown. Helping this young woman achieve this feat was Paralympian Deepa Malik and her daughter, Devika, co-founders of the Wheeling Happiness Foundation.

The finals, held in Mbombela, South Africa, saw Vidisha take on 11 finalists from 16 participating countries to bag the title. A former international tennis player, Vidisha has represented India in the Deaflympics and won a silver medal. Vidisha shared her entire journey through the competition on Instagram with a heart-warming post:


“While being crowned as Miss Deaf World would be etched in my memory for lifetime, the win was extra special to me for many reasons. As a hearing-impaired child, from not hearing the doorbell to being ignored by people, I’ve seen it all. But after seeing a meteoric rise in my sports career as a tennis player who earned the 5th rank in ‘Deaflympics’, tennis became as important as breathing. And then life’s another blow - a severe back injury left my hopes fractured.

Unable to see a reason to live, I didn’t give up because of the strength my family gave me. And in time, I was shown another way - Miss Deaf India. A novice to the world of beauty and fashion, I learnt what was needed and won the title. I am blessed with a quality - if I put my mind to something then I don’t measure efforts or time, I give it my all. Whether it’s dancing, basketball, swimming, tennis or yoga, I never slack in my efforts.

Maybe as a disabled child I learnt to overcompensate by my hard work to overcome my ability to listen properly. By the grace of the universe, after the Miss Deaf India contest, we crossed paths with Wheeling Happiness, an NGO who empowers disabled people. Thank you to each person who contributed in this victory. The crown is ours.”

தைவானில் நடந்த உலக அளவிலான இறகு பந்து போட்டியில் இந்திய அணி சார்பில் கலந்து கொண்டு தங்கப்பதக்கம் பெற்ற மாணவிக்கு நடிகர் விஜய்சேதுபதி பாராட்டு தெரிவித்தார்.

சிவகங்கை மாவட்டம் காரைக்குடியில் நடிகர் விஜய் சேதுபதி நடிக்கும் சங்க தமிழன் திரைப்படத்தின் படப்பிடிப்பு நடைபெற்று வருகிறது. இந்நிலையில், தைவானில் நடந்த காது கேளாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கான இறகு பந்து போட்டியில் இந்தியா சார்பில் கலந்துகொண்டு தங்கம் வென்ற மதுரை ஒளவை அரசு பள்ளி மாணவியான ஜெர்லின் காரைக்குடியில் வைத்து விஜய் சேதுபதியை சந்தித்தார்.
