Serum Institute of India (SII) Chairman Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla Monday made a strong case for supporting hearing-impaired and underprivileged children, and survivors of sexual violence.

“These causes often receive limited donor support, particularly those involving the hearing-impaired and rape survivors,” he said during the inauguration of the new building of the Indian Red Cross Society’s Dr Cyrus Poonawalla School for Hearing Impaired at Lullanagar in Pune.

Set up in 1976, Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla School for Hearing Impaired Monday relocated to a spacious new campus that includes state-of-the-art infrastructure and modern amenities. The Villoo Poonawalla Foundation has been supporting the school since it was set up. According to the school authorities, a grant of approximately Rs 4 crore was given for the new building and other facilities.

“Providing better healthcare and support to children with special needs is a cause very close to my heart. I feel deeply gratified to inaugurate the new school that is dedicated to children with hearing impairments. This is in keeping with our philosophy at SII to effectively utilise our resources to provide the best preventive solutions to the population, including children. This new building, encompassing advanced infrastructure and modern facilities for the hearing-impaired children, is a step towards the same direction,” Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla said, assuring annual donations to ensure students have a better learning environment.

He also spoke about championing the cause of the Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA). “We are endorsing the IDCA. They have some remarkable achievements and won laurels at various competitions in Dubai, Australia, England, and others,” he added.

The newly inaugurated school, spread across 30,000 sq ft is equipped with high-end technologies and designed in a manner to meet the unique needs of children with hearing impairments, offering a wide array of enhanced services and specialised support.

The school operates under the leadership of Dr Vikram Phatak, Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society, Pune, with Mabrin Nanavati serving as vice chairman, and Prof R V Kulkarni as secretary. The school is headed by Chairperson Dr Aparna Morris, with Mrunal Sarade as the principal.

Dr Morris told The Indian Express that the school is committed to reaching the most underserved sections of society. “Biannual outreach surveys are conducted in and around Pune, especially targeting children from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Once a child with hearing impairment is identified, the school initiates detailed counselling for the parents, encouraging them to enrol their child into an inclusive and nurturing learning environment,” Dr Morris added.

Teachers are specially trained to work with hearing-impaired students, and they employ interactive boards, sign language, and structured speech therapy sessions. “These approaches help children who cannot hear learn to identify sounds and gradually develop spoken language,” Dr Morris said.

Students are trained in crafts, drawing, and sculpture using materials like plasticine, and innovative techniques such as vibration belts are used to teach classical dance forms like Kathak, helping students feel the rhythm they cannot hear. According to the authorities, the school also plans to expand its curriculum to include vocational training, aiming to equip students with practical skills that will empower them to become financially independent and self-sufficient.

Growl unheard: Hearing-impaired children shifted to safety as 2 leopards sneak into school

Bengaluru: A tense silence cloaked a residential school at Belagumba near Tumakuru, 70km from Bengaluru, Monday morning. Not because danger wasn't present, but because the children couldn't hear it!

When two leopards stealthily entered the residential school for speech and hearing-impaired children around 9am, alarm bells rang out and the staff showed presence of mind and gathered the scattered students within short time to ensure their safety. Things could have gone horribly wrong, but they did not. Sprinting across the campus, the staff used gestures to gather the 30-plus children one by one and herded them into the safety of the building. Subsequently, forest department officials were alerted about the presence of the leopards. Assistant conservator of forests (Tumakuru) Pavithra said: "We were informed that a leopard was seen in the school vicinity. Upon inspection, we found evidence that a leopard had indeed passed through the area. The school is situated near a forest area."

In fact, there had been talks about leopard sightings in the area for the last two days as a few locals had spotted near an under-construction building nearby. "But we did not expect the wild cats to walk into areas where kids are there," said a resident pointing to the school, which is run by the Indian Red Cross Society.

In fact, the school administration had also found pugmarks around the school ground, confirming animal movements in the vicinity for the past two to three days. The sighting had led to heightened concerns among the school staff. "The greatest challenge was to ensure that the students were safe without creating panic," said a school staffer. "Due to the nature of their impairments, the children could not hear the warnings and were unaware of the danger... the staff had to work quickly to guide the children to safe locations. "It was a difficult situation, but we managed to prevent any untoward situation," the staffer said.

Forest officials have placed bones in the area in an attempt to lure the leopards and are actively working to capture them safely.

7-Year-Old Girl With Speech And Hearing Impairment Raped In Rajasthan

A seven-year-old deaf and mute girl was allegedly raped in Bandikui area of Rajasthan's Jaipur district, police said on Monday.

The girl who went missing from home on Sunday afternoon was found near her house in the evening. When she was brought black home, she was seen trembling in pain, they said.

She was taken to Bandikui hospital at night and was medically examined. The victim's father has registered a case against the unknown accused, they said.

Baswa police station in-charge Sachin Sharma said that a complaint was received on Sunday night. The family took the girl to Bandikui hospital.

He said that his daughter had left home on Sunday. After a lot of searching, the girl was found sitting at a place a little away from the house.

The police said that a case has been registered against the unknown accused.

The victim girl can neither speak nor hear. The police are now investigating the matter and the accused is being searched, Sharma said.

T20 Deaf Indian Premier League: The Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA) successfully concluded the 6th T20 Deaf Indian Premier League 2025 at GMSSS, Chandigarh, with Deaf Lucknow Giants lifting the championship trophy after a spirited four-day tournament held from August 1 to 4.

The event, organised by the Indian Deaf Cricket Association and supported by the UT Cricket Association (UTCA), featured eight dynamic teams from across the country: Deaf Mumbai Stars, Deaf Delhi Bulls, Deaf Hyderabad Eagles, Deaf Kolkata Warriors, Deaf Chennai Blasters, Deaf Bangalore Badshahs, Deaf Punjab Lions, and the champions Deaf Lucknow Giants.

Sumit Jain, president, IDCA, expressed immense pride in the tournament’s success. “This league is more than a championship—it's a celebration of courage, excellence, and the spirit of inclusion. We are proud to offer a national platform that showcases the talent and resilience of deaf athletes.”

PIL Seeks ASL Alongside Indian Sign Language

Aman Azad, who runs a news portal for people with hearing impairment, has filed a PIL with the SC seeking its intervention directing the union government and the competent authorities of all states and union territories to make ASL a compulsory subject in the curriculum of all schools for the specially-abled across India. The litigation also seeks that the Indian sign language (ISL) should be retained alongside the addition of ASL.

ASL To Open Global Job Opportunities: Petitioner

The petitioner has argued that proficiency in ASL would equip deaf students in India with the ability to communicate with a larger global community, opening up avenues for international education, employment, and cultural exchange.

‘ASL 4th Most Common In US’

He claimed that ASL is the fourth most common language in the United States and is widely used in other countries and learning it would significantly enhance their social and economic inclusion.

Vast Online Learning Resources Available In ASL

The PIL claimed that a vast majority of educational resources, including online courses, webinars, and technical tutorials, are available in ASL and access to these resources would equip hearing-impaired students with cutting-edge knowledge and skills.

Petition Cites Article 21 & RPWD Act

It added that the limited availability of such resources in ISL restricts their access to vital information. It also invoked the Indian constitution’s Article 21, which guarantees the fundamental right to education and the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which further emphasises the need for inclusive education and equal access to communication for persons with disabilities.

ISL Must Be Preserved For Cultural Identity

Through the petition, Azad has sought that ISL should also be retained to preserve India’s cultural heritage as well as deaf identity and implementing ASL would not diminish its importance.

“Instead, it would promote bilingualism among deaf students, offering them greater flexibility and communication options. This bilingual approach is increasingly recognised as beneficial for cognitive development and academic achievement among deaf individuals,” read the petition.

Push For ASL Teacher Training & Resource Allocation

Along with the directions to implement bilingualism, Azad has prayed for allocation of necessary resources and training for teachers and educators to effectively implement the bilingual education programs.

ASL Could Create 25,000 Teaching Jobs: Azad

Talking to The Free Press Journal, Azad said, “India has a population of 63 lakh people with hearing impairment. If we introduce ASL for the deaf population, it will introduce vacancies for 25,000 ASL teachers across the country, which will benefit the specially-abled youth, who are unemployed. This has the potential to change the lives of people with disabilities.”
