Maharashtra win IDCA's 9th T20 National Cricket Championship for deaf 2025

New Delhi [India], November 10 (ANI): Maharashtra Deaf team defeated Jammu & Kashmir Deaf team by eight runs to emerge as the champions of the 9th T20 National Cricket Championship for the Deaf in New Delhi.

The champion's trophy was handed to Maharashtra captain Pranil More by Chief Guest Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Member of Parliament for West Delhi, who was present at the closing ceremony along with Jai Bhagwan Yadav, Deputy. Mayor, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Jaswinder Narang, CEO Villoo Poonawalla Foundation & Serum Institute of India, according to a release from IDCA.

Congratulating the players, Kamaljeet Sehrawat said, "I am really honoured to be here today and witness the final match. Our Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji has been leading from the front when it comes to sports and inclusivity, and I am happy to be a small part of it here. I congratulate all the players who are present here and wish to end by saying that one day I hope I also get to witness you all as part of the Indian team and lifting the World trophy."

Jaswinder Narang, CEO of Villoo Poonawalla Foundation & Serum Institute of India, congratulated all the participants and added. "I congratulate all cricketers on their remarkable performance. Your determination and passion for the sport is truly inspiring, and we're proud to support your journey. A total of 20 teams from across the country participated in the championship, which was kicked off on November 3rd at Delhi's Essex Farm Cricket Ground in Chhawla. The 9th edition of the T20 National Cricket Championship for Deaf 2025 was organised by The Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA), supported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and recognised by the Deaf International Cricket Council & Asian Deaf Cricket Association.

The week-long championship, organised under the patronage of Cyrus Poonawalla Group, brought together some of India's most talented hearing-impaired cricketers from across the nation and had representatives from Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Telangana, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab, Odisha, Delhi, and Bengal.

The matches were hosted across four venues in Chhawla -- Essex Farms Cricket Club and Academy, Harryan Cricket Academy, Arihant Cricket Ground, and Arihant Mount Cricket Club -- ensuring simultaneous matches and an exciting schedule throughout the tournament.

The fixture included 40 league matches from 3rd to 7th November, followed by quarterfinals on Saturday 8th November and semi-finals on the morning of 9th November, followed by the grand final in the afternoon.

Speaking about the championship, Sumit Jain, President, IDCA, said, "The 9th T20 National Cricket Championship for Deaf celebrated the spirit and resilience of our very talented hearing-impaired athletes who travelled from across the country to be part of this amazing event. The Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA), backed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and acknowledged by the Deaf International Cricket Council, launched the ninth T20 National Cricket Championship for Deaf in 2025. A grand opening ceremony took place at Essex Farm Cricket Ground in Chhawla, New Delhi, attended by prominent guests including Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma and SBK Singh, IPS.

The week-long tournament, under the aegis of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group, runs from November 3 to November 9, featuring 20 teams from diverse states. These include Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and others, competing across four venues in Chhawla. The matches offer a thrilling spectacle, culminating in the grand final on November 9.

IDCA President Sumit Jain emphasized the championship as a movement celebrating the spirit and talent of hearing-impaired cricketers. The court, in the order passed on Monday, said the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 leaves no scope of discrimination between persons having hearing impairment vis-a-vis those having physical or locomotor disability

The Delhi High Court has directed the Centre to frame appropriate criteria for conferring the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, 2025 on hearing impaired sportspersons, noting that the existing criteria discriminates against them vis-a-vis para sportspersons.

The court, in the order passed on Monday (November 3, 2025), said the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 leaves no scope of discrimination between persons having hearing impairment vis-a-vis those having physical or locomotor disability.

It added, in the context of the ‘Scheme of Cash Awards for Medal Winners’ in international sports events, lack of opportunity for deaf sportspersons has the impact of creating a discriminatory regime.

Justice Sachin Datta said the criteria be framed expeditiously to enable the deaf sportspersons to submit applications for the purpose of award, and directed that the deadline, which was October 28, for submission of applications be extended suitably.

The court was hearing a plea by Mr. Virender Singh, internationally renowned hearing impaired wrestler, multi-time Deaflympics gold medallist and an Arjuna Awardee, along with another deaf sportsperson.

Mr. Singh, represented by advocate Ajay Verma, challenged exclusion of deaf athletes from key government sports schemes and alleged discriminatory treatment vis-a-vis para-athletes and sought parity between deaf and para-athletes.

His plea stated that while framing the criteria for conferring the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2025, no dispensation is created for hearing impaired sportspersons.

After going through the criteria, the court observed that there is no scope for hearing impaired sportspersons to even apply or be considered for conferment of the award, making it discriminatory against deaf sportspersons vis-a-vis para sportspersons.

“In the above conspectus, there is merit in the contentions of the petitioner/applicant that the aforesaid criteria discriminate against deaf sportspersons vis-a-vis para sportspersons,” it said.

Missing Deaf-Mute Hindu Minor Girl Surfaces In Pak, Married To Older Man

A 15-year-old Hindu girl, born deaf and mute, who was missing for over a week, has surfaced before the media in Pakistan's Sindh province, holding a certificate of conversion to Islam after allegedly marrying a much older Muslim man.

The girl from Korwah town in Badin district had gone missing around nine days ago. Her parents had lodged an abduction complaint with the local police.

On Saturday, she appeared before the media at Badin Press Club alongside her alleged husband, where photographs of her holding the conversion certificate were taken.

Her father questioned how a deaf and mute minor could have agreed to marry a man who is a drug dealer and already has seven daughters.

Shiva Kachhi, who heads the Darawar Ittehad Pakistan, an organisation working for the welfare and rights of Hindus and minorities, said the girl had been abducted, but the police failed to take any action despite the family's complaint.

"We have spoken to our lawyers to pursue the case as we don't believe the girl could have done this willingly," Kachhi said, adding that he had also written to senior police officials demanding an independent inquiry into the incident.
