திருச்சியில் காதுகேளாத மாணவர் சாதனை

சிவகாசியில் கடந்த 30, 31 ம் தேதி நடைபெற்ற Tamil Nadu Sports Council of the Deaf சார்பில் தமிழ்நாடு மாநில அளவிலான விளையாட்டுப்போட்டி நடைபெற்றது. ஒவ்வொரு மாவட்டத்தில் இருந்தும் விளையாட்டு வீரர்கள் பங்கேற்றனர்கள். திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் திருச்சி மாவட்ட காதுகேளாதோர் நல முன்னேற்ற சங்கத்தின் சார்பில் மணிகண்டன் என்ற மாணவர் பங்கேற்றார். இவர் துறையூர்  ஸ்ரீவித்யா மந்திர் மெட்ரிக் பள்ளியில் 9-ம் வகுப்பு பயின்று வருகிறார். ஜூனியர் பிரிவில் 100m., 200m, 110m Hurdles ஓட்டப்பந்தயத்தில் முதலிடம் பிடித்துள்ளார். அது மட்டுமல்லாமல் Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump என வெவ்வேறு போட்டிகளிலும் வெற்றி பெற்றுள்ளார். இவர் மொத்தம் 6 தங்கப்பதக்கமும் 1 வெண்கல பதக்கமும் பெற்று சாதனை படைத்துள்ளார். இவருக்கு திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் திருச்சி மாவட்ட காதுகேளாதோர் நல முன்னேற்ற சங்கத்தில் மணிகண்டனை பாராட்டி பொன்னாடை அணிவித்தனர். அவர் பயின்ற பள்ளியில் நிறுவினர், விளையாட்டு ஆசிரியர் மற்றும் வகுப்பு ஆசிரியர்களும் மாணவர்களும் பாராட்டி உற்சாகப்படுத்தினார்கள். காதுகேளாதோர் விளையாட்டு பிரிவில் மணிகண்டன் பங்கேற்று சாதனை புரிந்து உள்ளார்.

''பிறவியிலேயே செவித்திறன் பாதித்த 50 குழந்தைகளுக்கு மதுரை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் நுண்துளை சிகிச்சை மூலம் காது கருவி பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளதாக,'' காது மூக்கு தொண்டை பிரிவு துறைதலைவர் தினகரன் பேசினார்.மதுரை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் நுண்துளை ஆப்பரேஷனில் காதுகருவி பொருத்துதல் குறித்த கருத்தரங்கு நடந்தது. டீன் மருதுபாண்டியன் தலைமை வகித்தார். கண்காணிப்பாளர் ஷீலா மல்லிகா ராணி முன்னிலை வகித்தார். சென்னை காது மூக்கு தொண்டை சிறப்பு நிபுணர் மோகன் காமேஸ்வரன் நவீன சிகிச்சை குறித்து பேசினார்.

காது மூக்கு தொண்டை பிரிவு துறை தலைவர் தினகரன் பேசியதாவது:பிறவியிலேயே காது கேட்காத 1 முதல் 6 வயதிற்கு உட்பட்ட குழந்தைகளுக்கு நுண்துளை ஆபரேஷன் மூலம் காதுகருவி பொருத்தும் பணி 2016 ஜனவரியில் இங்கு துவங்கியது. இதன் மூலம் 50 குழந்தைகள் பயனடைந்துள்ளனர். ஆப்பரேஷன் முடிந்த பின் ஒரு ஆண்டு பேச்சு பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்படும்.பின்னர், பிற குழந்தைகளை போல பள்ளிகளில் சேர்ந்து படிக்கின்றனர்.இந்த அறுவை சிகிச்சையில் தமிழகத்தில் மதுரை 3 வது இடத்தில் உள்ளது.பிறவியில் செவித்திறன் பாதித்த குழந்தைகளின், பெற்றோர் அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்கு குழந்தைகளை அழைத்து வந்து செவித்திறன் பெறச் செய்யலாம், என்றார்.

Devendra Jhajharia’s Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna should make us proud. But will it change the way we treat para-athletes?

For the first time in India, a Paralympian, Devendra Jhajharia, has received the country’s highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. Jhajharia, a Javelin thrower, shot to fame when he won his first gold at the 2004 Athens Paralympics Games after which he improved his own record to clinch another gold at the Rio Paralympics Games in 2016.

This honour will surely give a boost to young para-athletes given that the Indian public as well as the government have been ignorant of, or apathetic towards, the successes of our Paralympians even though these sportspersons won more medals in Rio than their Olympic counterparts.

This apathy was seen recently when a contingent of 46 hearing-impaired athletes returned to India after winning five medals, including a gold, at the Deaflympics held in Turkey. The athletes were in the news not because of their achievement but because they refused to leave the airport seeing that there were no sports officials or ministers to felicitate or even welcome them. After six long hours, a project officer with the Sports Authority of India finally went to meet them reportedly.

This is not surprising as Paralympics are not taken seriously in India as they are in other countries. As a result, media coverage of events and achievements is either limited or completely absent. Last year, for instance, the Rio Summer Paralympics weren’t even broadcast on Indian television. A golden opportunity was foregone to popularise these sports and familiarise the public with the names of para-athletes. How many even know of Devendra Jhajharia or Mariyappan Thangavelu?

Struggles before and after the event

While non-disabled sportspersons in cricket, and now perhaps tennis and badminton, search for good infrastructure and sponsors, sportspersons with disabilities find these struggles more difficult. Take the case of Kanchanmala Pande. The blind athlete was forced to beg in Berlin to take part in the Para-Swimming Championships as the money sanctioned to the athletes there by the government failed to reach them. Pande went on to win a silver and qualified for the World Championship.

The woes don’t end there. Para-athletes, even after winning medals, find it difficult to sustain themselves. It is not enough for the government to confer awards; it needs to go a step further and ensure that these sportspersons have job security in return for the pride and honour that they bring to the nation.

Of course, this attitude is not just towards para-athletes; it is a reflection of how society treats persons with disabilities. While this is a moment to celebrate, it is also a moment to introspect. Conferring a medal should not make us glaze over the larger problem. Unless we learn to treat para-athletes on par with sportspersons without disabilities, our jubilance must be restrained.

சிவகாசியில் நடைபெற்ற மாற்றுத்திறனாளி மாணவர்களுக்கான மாநில அளவிலான தடகள போட்டியில் 300 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவ,மாணவியர் பங்கேற்றனர்.

விருதுநகர் மாவட்டம் சிவகாசியில் காது கேளாதோர் வாய்பேச முடியாத மாற்றுதிறன் கொண்ட பள்ளி கல்லூரி மாணவ, மாணவியருக்கான மாநில அளவிலான தடகள போட்டி நடைபெற்றன.இதில் சென்னை,கோவை, நெல்லை விருதுநகர் உள்ளிட்ட 20 மாவட்டங்களை சேர்ந்த 320 மாணவ,மாணவியர் கலந்துகொண்டனர்.

ஜூனியர் மற்றும் சீனியர் என இரு பிரிவுகளாக மாணவ மாணவியருக்கு தனித்தனியே போட்டிகள் நடைபெற்றது. 100 மீட்டர் ஓட்டம், தடை தாண்டுதல் உயரம் தாண்டுதல்,ஈட்டி எறிதல் வட்டு எறிதல் உள்ளிட்ட தடகள போட்டிகள் நடைபெற்றது. இதில் மாற்று திறன் கொண்ட மாணவ,மாணவிகள் ஆர்வத்துடன் பங்கேற்றனர்.

செவித்திறன் பள்ளியின் முன்னேற்றத்திற்கு செவி சாய்க்குமா அரசு! பதில் அளிக்க நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவு

உயர் நீதிமன்ற மதுரைக் கிளையில், கருப்பையா என்பவர் பொதுநல வழக்கைத் தாக்கல்செய்திருந்தார். அதில்,”விருதுநகர் மாவட்டம் சூலக்கரைப் பகுதியில், 1981-ம் ஆண்டு முதல் செவிக்குறைபாடுடைய மாணவர்களுக்கான அரசு உயர்நிலைப் பள்ளி செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. இந்தப் பள்ளியில், 19 மாணவிகள் உட்பட 49 மாணவர்கள் பயில்கின்றனர். 13 ஆசிரியர்கள் பணியாற்றிவருகின்றனர். இந்தப் பள்ளியில் 27 பணியிடங்கள் உள்ள நிலையில், தலைமை ஆசிரியை, அலுவலக உதவியாளர் உள்ளிட்ட ஏழு பணியிடங்கள் கடந்த சில ஆண்டுகளாக காலியாக உள்ளன. மேலும், இந்தப் பள்ளியின் மின் இணைப்பு, குடிநீர் மற்றும் பயன்பாட்டுக்கான நீர் செல்லும் குழாய்கள் சேதமடைந்துள்ளன. செவித்திறன் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குழந்தைகளுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் 11 அரசுப் பள்ளிகளே உள்ளன. அந்தப் பள்ளிகளிலும் மாணவர்களுக்கு அடிப்படைத் தேவைகள் பூர்த்திசெய்யப்படாமல் இருப்பதால், மிகுந்த சிரமத்துக்கு உள்ளாகின்றனர். எனவே, சூலக்கரை பள்ளியை சீரமைத்துத் தர உத்தரவிட வேண்டும்” என்று குறிப்பிடப்பட்டிருந்தது.

இந்த மனு, நேற்று விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. அப்போது அரசுத்தரப்பில் ஆஜரான வழக்கறிஞர், 'பள்ளியில் 51 மாணவர்கள் உள்ளனர். செவித்திறன் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மாணவர்களுக்கான பள்ளியில் 10 மாணவர்களுக்கு 1 ஆசிரியர் என்ற விகிதத்தில் பணியிடம் நிரப்பப்படும். இந்தப் பள்ளியில் 51 மாணவர்களுக்கு 13 ஆசிரியர்கள் உள்ளனர். மேலும், அடிப்படை வசதிகளை மேம்படுத்தி, பள்ளி மற்றும் விடுதியை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கு 20 லட்ச ரூபாய் தேவை எனத் திட்ட மதிப்பீடு அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது எனத் தெரிவித்தார். இதையடுத்து, இதுகுறித்து மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் நல ஆணையத்தின் மாநில ஆணையர் பதிலளிக்க உத்தரவிட்டு, வழக்கை தீர்ப்புக்காக செப்டம்பர் 12-ஆம் தேதிக்கு ஒத்திவைத்து நீதிபதிகள் உத்தரவிட்டனர்.

Cartel restricting cochlear implants, surgeons tell PM

NEW DELHI: Several earnose-throat (ENT) surgeons have sought government intervention against an alleged nexus between a group of surgeons and suppliers of cochlear implants, restricting the availability of these devices used in the treatment of deafness.

In independent pleas sent to the Prime Minister's Office and the drug price regulator, these surgeons have claimed that the cartel effectively decides who performs cochlear implant surgeries in the country.

The surgeons say their complaints are based on concerns shared by many ENT specialists that fellow surgeons from the Cochlear Implant Group of India (CIGI) are colluding to restrict supplies of the hearing aids, leaving other surgeons and patients devoid of the implants.

CIGI has restricted access to cochlear implants by imposing "unrealistic and unscientific" criteria for ENT surgeons to handle cochlear implants and by insisting that only "mentors approved by companies" should train surgeons for the implants, the complainants have said.

Cochlear implants are small electronic devices that provide a sense of sound to the profoundly deaf by directly stimulating the auditory nerve.

It's market price ranges from Rs 5.5 lakh to around Rs 15 lakh. Around 1 lakh children are born deaf every year in India but doctors say less than 5,000 procedures are carried out, mainly because the implants are expensive.

Besides, the cost of the procedure, allegedly dictated by a select group of ENT surgeons, is exponentially high.

According to the complainants, CIGI created some misleading guidelines which created an impression that only a select group of surgeons can perform a cochlear implant operation.

While the conflict between the two groups of surgeons has been going on for a few years, complainants say that repeated pleas to CIGI have failed to yield results. CIGI, meanwhile, maintains that it is not a regulatory authority which can restrict supplies.

Instead, the guidelines are only meant to ensure that only competent surgeons perform cochlear implant procedures.

In their letter to the PMO and the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the complainants have also alleged that the cartel is driven by commissions on implants.

The surgeons are now hoping that government intervention can not only help bust the cartel but make these procedures more affordable and accessible for patients.
