எங்களுக்கும் ஓட்டளிக்க வாய்ப்பா? காது கேளாதோர் நெகிழ்ச்சி

திருப்பூர்: "இதுநாள் வரை கண்டுகொள்ளப்படாமல் இருந்த எங்களையும், வரும் தேர்தலில் கண்டிப்பாக ஓட்டளிக்க வேண்டும் என, தேர்தல் கமிஷன் எடுத்துள்ள நடவடிக்கை, மகிழ்ச்சி அளிக்கிறது' என, காதுகேளாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் நெகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தனர்.

திருப்பூர் மாவட்ட அளவில், காதுகேளாத, வாய்பேச முடியாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள், 320 பேர் உள்ளனர். தேர்தல் குறித்து, அவர்களிடம் விழிப்புணர்வு ஏற்படுத்தாததால், மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் ஓட்டளிப்பது குறைவாக இருந்தது. இத்தேர்தலில், 100 சதவீத ஓட்டுப்பதிவு நடக்க வேண்டும் என, தேர்தல் கமிஷன் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது. இதற்காக, காதுகேளாத, வாய்பேச முடியாதவர்களை கண்டறிந்து, அவர்களுக்கு, நேற்று தேர்தல் குறித்து பயிற்சி அளிக்கப்பட்டது.

காதுகேளாதவர் விளையாட்டு குழு செய்தி தொடர்பாளர் சித்ரா பயிற்சி அளித்தார். தொடர்ந்து, கலெக்டர், தேர்தல் பார்வையாளர் முன்னிலையில், "சைகை' முறையில், உறுதிமொழி ஏற்றனர்.

பேனரில் இல்லையே?

தேர்தல் கமிஷன் தயாரித்துள்ள விழிப்புணர்வு பேனரில், உடல் ஊனமுற்றவர், பார்வையற்றவர், முதியோர் படம் மட்டும் இருந்தது. மேடையின் பின்புறம் இருந்த அந்த பேனரை சுட்டிக்காட்டிய, காதுகேளாதவர் ஒருவர், "அந்த பேனரில் கூட நாங்கள் இல்லையே?' என்று "சைகை' மூலம் வருத்தத்துடன் கேட்டார்.

கலெக்டர் ஜெயந்தி, ""காதுகேளாதவர்கள், சராசரி மனிதராகவே தெரிகிறீர்கள்; அதனால், உங்களை அதில் சேர்க்கவில்லை. உங்களது விருப்பத்தை நிறைவேற்றும் வகையில், உங்களை போன்ற ஒருவரையும் பேனரில் சேர்த்து, விழிப்புணர்வு ஏற்படுத்தப்படும்,'' என்றார். அதை புரிந்துகொண்ட காதுகேளாதவர்கள், கரவொலி எழுப்பி, நன்றி தெரிவித்தனர்.

வாய் பேச இயலாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண்ணை பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்ய முயன்ற முதியவருக்கு 6 ஆண்டு சிறை தண்டனை விதித்து அரியலூர் மகிளா கோர்ட்டு தீர்ப்பு வழங்கியுள்ளது.

பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்ய முயற்சி

அரியலூர் மாவட்டம் செந்துறை அருகே மருங்கூர் கிராமம் காலனி தெருவை சேர்ந்தவர் பிச்சைபிள்ளை (வயது 59). கூலித்தொழிலாளியான இவர், தனது வீட்டில் ஆடு, மாடுகளை வளர்த்து பிழைப்பு நடத்தி வருகிறார். இவரது வீட்டின் அருகே 16 வயதுடைய வாய் பேச இயலாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண் ஒருவர் தனது குடும்பத்தினருடன் வசித்து வருகிறார். இந்த நிலையில் பிச்சைபிள்ளைக்கும், அந்த பெண்ணின் குடும்பத்தினருக்கும் இடையே நட்பின் அடிப்படையில் பழக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. கடந்த 19–9–2015 அன்று அந்த மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண் தனது வீட்டில் தனியாக இருந்த போது அங்கு பிச்சைபிள்ளை வந்தார். பின்னர் பிச்சைபிள்ளை அந்த பெண்ணிடம், தாகம் எடுப்பதாக கூறி தண்ணீர் கேட்டார். இதையடுத்து அந்த பெண் தண்ணீர் கொண்டு வருவதற்காக வீட்டினுள் சென்றார். அப்போது அவரை பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்த பிச்சைபிள்ளை வலுக்கட்டாயமாக கட்டிப்பிடித்து சில்மிஷத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்ய முயன்றார்.

முதியவருக்கு 6 ஆண்டு சிறை தண்டனை

இதனால் அதிர்ச்சியடைந்த அந்த மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண் கதறினார். சத்தம் கேட்டதும் அங்கிருந்த பொதுமக்கள் வீட்டிற்குள் சென்று அந்த மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண்ணை மீட்டனர். மேலும் இந்த சம்பவம் குறித்து குவாகம் போலீசுக்கு தகவல் தெரிவித்து பிச்சைபிள்ளையை பொதுமக்கள் போலீசில் ஒப்படைத்தனர். இந்த சம்பவம் குறித்து பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணின் பெற்றோர் அளித்த புகாரின் பேரில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண்ணை பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்ய முயன்றதாக போலீசார் வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்து பிச்சைபிள்ளையை கைது செய்தனர். மேலும் அவர் மீது அரியலூர் மகிளா கோர்ட்டில் போலீசார் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தனர். இந்த வழக்கு அரியலூர் மகிளா கோர்ட்டில் தொடர்ந்து நடந்து வந்தது.

இந்த நிலையில் இந்த வழக்கினை விசாரித்த அரியலூர் மகிளா கோர்ட்டு நீதிபதி லிங்கேஷ்வரன் நேற்று தீர்ப்பு கூறினார். அதில் குற்றம் சுமத்தப்பட்ட பிச்சைபிள்ளைக்கு 6 ஆண்டுகள் சிறைதண்டனையும், ரூ.6 ஆயிரம் அபராதமும், மேலும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணிற்கு இழப்பீடாக ரூ.5 ஆயிரம் வழங்க வேண்டும் எனவும் தீர்ப்பு கூறினார். அதனை தொடர்ந்து கோர்ட்டில் இருந்து பிச்சைபிள்ளையை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்த குவாகம் போலீசார் போலீஸ் வேனில் கொண்டு சென்று அவரை திருச்சி மத்திய சிறையில் அடைத்தனர்.

12.04.2016, BENGALURU: Former Australian Cricketer Brett Lee is in the city for ‘Sounds of Cricket’, an awareness campaign on hearing loss.

The 31-year-old world-renowned bowler will draw attention to the functional, social, emotional and economic impact of hearing loss on individuals and their families.

Lee’s son suffered from hearing loss because of a head injury. “Even though he recovered in a couple of months, at that point of time I was so disturbed,” he confided.

This incident got him to associate with the campaign as it could help millions who suffer from hearing loss.

“I want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to experience what I hear — the sounds of everyday life or cricket, or the voices of loved ones,” Lee added.

He wants to spread the messages of how cochlear implants can help individuals with hearing loss lead a normal life. “Parents and other family members should not ignore the smallest of signs. They should take speedy action,” he cautioned. “I have seen how an implant takes a person from silence to sound. It is life- changing.”

According to the World Health Organisation, hearing loss is the most widespread sensory deficit across the globe. Delay in identification and treatment can affect quality of life in terms of language acquisition, social and emotional development, and education and employment. Around 5 per cent of the world’s population suffers from disabling hearing loss.

Dr Shankar Madikeri, senior ENT surgeon at Madikeri Super Specialty ENT Centre, said, “There is definitely an urgent need for universal new-born screening in India. This can help identify hearing loss at birth.”

Lee is the global brand ambassador of Cochlear, an international firm that deals with implantable hearing solutions. He had unveiled the Indian leg of Sound of Cricket in Mumbai last year. Lee will interact with Christ University students on Tuesday. He will also participate in a cricket match on the campus, played by children with hearing disability.

The Incredible Story Of How A Man Teaches Photography Using Sign Language

How has photography benefited the deaf? I have been asked this question umpteen times in the last eight years. To answer this question, I need to share my own story. I used to be a businessman until 2000 when I had a surgery that changed my life; it not only rendered me deaf but also led to tinnitus, a condition that results in a non-stop ringing in the operated ear.

At the time, I had no interest in photography. However, due to my new-found deafness, I was forced to give up my small computer business. So, at the age of 40, I reinvented myself; I did a course on journalism and photography and started contributing to international publications. My initial foray into photography was to complement my writing. But, as my photographs started receiving more appreciation, I figured that this new talent had something to do with my deafness.

I now had to rely more on my eyes to make up for my hearing loss, and photography is all about the eyes, the mind and hand coordination. So, I decided to share this talent with a simple realisation – that perhaps, the deaf can become good, if not better photographers.

I voluntarily began conducting weekend classes at Mumbai’s Sanskardham Vidyalaya for deaf children. Initially, progress was very slow. But one day, in a moment of frustration, I told the children that I travelled one and a half hours, changed two trains and carried loads of cameras in my backpack so I could teach them. They spontaneously raised their hands saying ‘thank you’ in sign language, and this gesture really moved me. After that day, they became very attentive, and there was no turning back.

Three years later, due to monetary constraints, I took up a paid assignment. But, by then, my students had become passionate about photography and wanted me to continue teaching them. So, I started a Facebook page called Deaf Photography (now renamed ‘Spreading Light Through Photography’), where they could post their pictures on a regular basis.Rajen (centre) with students.

Since I love street photography, I also started taking them on outdoor trips in batches of 25-30. Street photography is very challenging because it requires one to click photos quietly and in split seconds, without the subjects becoming conscious. It also offered scope for creativity and highlighting social issues. This activity really took off and is a regular thing now.
