A hearing and speech impaired, 19-year-old girl was found to have been gang-raped as she approached a government hospital in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, complaining of acute stomach pain and bleeding, an official said.

As the doctors found her pregnant on her medical examination, they informed the local police and district administration, which arranged for a sign-language expert to know how was she fell victim to the crime, he said.

In her interaction with the sign language experts, the teenager victim said she had been raped by two or three unidentified men when she was working in an agriculture farm around two months back, Bhilwara collector Ashish Modi said.

The rape victim had to undergo an abortion as the pregnancy had been endangering her life, Mr Modi said, adding the girl has been admitted to the hospital and is doing fine.

He said the police have initiated the legal action in the case and are trying to track the culprits.

The Mylius’s wanted to adopt a second child after the birth of their daughter Kaila. Their search brought them to India where they matched with Naina in October 2019 when she was just 18 months old. Naina was a premature baby and was hearing-impaired. She was abandoned in a newborn intensive care unit. However, her medical complications did not stop Mylius from going ahead with the adoption.

They were set to obtain Naina’s custody in March 2020 but then the whole world went under a lockdown due to Covid-19 and all operations were put on hold. After anxiously waiting for many months, they got Naina’s custody in December 2020 and were set to travel to India in February 2021 to receive their daughter.

Unfortunately, a week before they were set to leave for India, it snowed too much in Texas that put all operations at a halt. The couple was yet to receive their visa from the Indian consulate. Explaining the precarious situation, Johonna Mylius wrote in an essay published on Love What Matters, “We were set to fly out of Houston on Wednesday. Saturday and Sunday, it snowed and no mail was delivered. Monday was President’s Day so, no mail was running. Tuesday, roads still icy, we were out of electricity at home, phone lines were down, and the Indian consulate wasn’t answering.”

In a last-ditch attempt, the couple drove to the Indian Consulate and got their visas just in time for their flight that was on the same day. They soon met Naina in India and brought her home to America after finishing the formalities. They named their daughter Naina Hope Mylius.

Alwar Horror: Rajasthan Minister Says 'medical Records Confirm No Proof Of Rape'

After handing over investigation of the alleged rape case of a specially-abled minor girl in Rajasthan's Alwar to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Rajasthan’s Minister of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, on Saturday, emphasised that the Congress regime will make sure that the culprits behind the horrifying incident are put behind bars. Besides, the minister remained firm on the stand that ‘police has ruled out rape’ in the matter.

On being questioned about the developments in the investigation of the case, Rajasthan Minister Khachariyawas said that the medical records in the case have suggested that there was no proof of rape and added that an investigation is still being carried out to understand the case.

'Medical reports suggest no proof of rape': Rajasthan Minister on Alwar incident

Khachariyawas said that police and CBI officials, along with doctors, are conducting the probe and will decide on the rape allegations based on the findings of the investigation. The Rajasthan police on January 15 had ruled out rape in the Alwar incident. A medical report submitted by the police documented that the distressed victim, found with injuries on her private parts in Alwar district was not raped. Meanwhile, police findings also revealed that the minor had travelled on her own from her village to the city.

Khachariyawas' comment comes as the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government continues to face severe backlash by people on the alleged rape of a fifteen-year-old differently-abled girl. Gehlot has been cornered by the state opposition, BJP, on the issue, and has time and again assured that timely justice will be provided to the minor and the culprits will be apprehended soon.

Notably, on January 15, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) took suo-moto cognizance of the Alwar rape case. It further sought a report from the Rajasthan Chief Secretary by January 24.

Deaf UChicago student begs university to lift mask mandate so he can understand professors

A deaf student at the University of Chicago is begging the school to lift its campus mask mandate.

The school has implemented rigorous COVID-19 prevention requirements for attendance. Instructors and students are not permitted to remove masks to speak, even during class.

The mandate has made school difficult for some students with disabilities.

"I am an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, a school which I love," student Declan Hurley said. "But today, I am imploring the University of Chicago administration to lift or modify their mask mandate, which hurts deaf and hard of hearing people like me."

Hurley is vice president of the independent school newspaper, The Chicago Thinker, and has a hearing disability.

Last fall, the university was more relaxed with its restrictions, allowing individuals to remove masks when speaking. However, the rule has since been tightened, no longer allowing students to remove their masks, even for discussion or to participate in classes.

"This policy allowed me to actually hear my classmates and instructors as masks muffle people's speech and prevent me from reading their lips," Hurley explained in a video, referring to the previous rules. "Moreover, people subconsciously change their speech patterns while wearing masks. But this quarter, the university is explicitly banning students and professors from taking off their masks while speaking in class."

Hurley went on to claim that the university has passed a series of policies that are at odds with the world's current understanding of the COVID-19 virus.

"Administrators cite the omicron variant, but one report says omicron case fatality rate is one fortieth of that of the delta variant," Hurley added in the video. "The New York Times says that for a vaccinated 75-year-old, contracting the flu is riskier than getting omicron. And the university allows students to wear cloth masks, which former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb says are near functionless against COVID."

Hurley said that while there are a variety of restrictions he wishes to see abolished, he'd most like to see the requirement for masks during classes scrapped, describing the policy as "cruel."

"At the very least, I beg UChicago to allow me to hear in class by allowing teachers and students to take off their masks while speaking," Hurley said. "Anything less is cruel to the deaf and hard of hearing and sinks beneath UChicago's legacy of free academic inquiry."
