உயிரிழந்த காதுகேளாத பெண்ணின் சடலத்தை இரு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் ஏற்றி வந்த சோகச் சம்பவம்

பெங்களூரு: பெங்களூரு அருகே ஆம்புலன்ஸ் வசதி மறுக்கப்பட்டதால் உடல்நலக்குறைவால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு, உயிரிழந்த காதுகேளாத பெண்ணின் சடலத்தை இரு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் ஏற்றி வந்த சோகச் சம்பவம் நிகழ்ந்துள்ளது.

பெங்களூரில் இருந்து சுமார் 150கி.மீ தொலைவில், மதுகிரி பகுதியில் உள்ள வீரபுராவில் வசித்து வரும் ரத்னம்மா(20), கடந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை உடல்நலக் குறைவால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு உயிரிழந்தார். வீரபுராவில் இருந்து 6 கி.மீ தொலைவிற்கு ரத்னம்மாவை இரு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் ஏற்றிக் கொண்டு கொடிகெனஹள்ளியில் உள்ள ஆரம்ப சுகாதார மையத்திற்கு அவரது தந்தை திம்மாப்பா அழைத்துச் சென்றுள்ளார்.

சாதாரண பூ வியாபாரியாக உள்ள திம்மப்பா மருத்துவ செலவிற்கு வெறும் ரூ.150 மட்டுமே வைத்துள்ளார். சனிக்கிழமை காலை கடுமையான காய்ச்சல் மற்றும் சளியால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த ரத்னம்மாவுக்கு கொடிகெனஹள்ளி சுகாதார மையத்தில் மருந்து மாத்திரைக் கொடுத்து வீட்டிற்கு அனுப்பியுள்ளனர்.

ஆனால், அன்று மாலை தன்னால் முடியவில்லை என்று ரத்னம்மா கூறியதையடுத்து, அருகேயுள்ள தனியார் கிளினிக்கிற்கு திம்மப்பாவும் அவரது மகனும் கொண்டு சென்றனர். ரத்னம்மாவை பரிசோதித்த மருத்துவர் பாபு ஊசி, போட்டு மாத்திரைக் கொடுத்து உடனடியாக மதுகிரி மருத்துவமனைக்கு கொண்டு செல்ல வேண்டும் என்று அறிவுறுத்தினார். ஆனால் அவர் ஆம்புலன்ஸ் வசதிக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்துத் தரவில்லை.

இந்நிலையில், இரவு முழுவதும் தூங்க முடியாமல் சிரமப்பட்ட ரத்னம்மாவை மதுகிரியில் உள்ள மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்க அவசர ஆம்புலன்ஸ் உதவியை திம்மப்பா நாடியுள்ளார். ஆனால், ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சேவை கிடைக்காததால் மீண்டும் ரத்னம்மாவை தனது இரு சக்கர வாகனத்தில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு 6.கி.மீ பயணம் செய்து சுகாதார மையத்திற்குச் சென்றுள்ளார். அங்கு செல்வதற்குள் ரத்னம்மா பரிதாபமாக உயிரிழந்துவிட்டார்.

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து சுகாதார மையத்தில் இருந்து ரத்னம்மாவின் உடலை வீட்டிற்குக் கொண்டு செல்ல திம்மப்பா மீண்டும் ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சேவை வேண்டும் என்று கோரிக்கை வைத்துள்ளார். அப்போது, இறந்த பிணத்தைக் கொண்டு செல்ல ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சேவை தரப்படமாட்டாது என்றுக் கூறி சுகாதார மைய ஊழியர்கள் நிராகரித்துள்ளனர். இதன் காரணமாக சுமார் 6.கி.மீ வரை இறந்துபோன தனது மகளின் உடலை இருசக்கர வாகனத்தில் வைத்து வீட்டிற்கு கொண்டு சென்றுள்ளார். இச்சம்பவம் அப்பகுதியினரை சோகத்தில் ஆழ்த்தியுள்ளது.

இது குறித்து மாவட்ட சுகாதாரத்துறை அதிகாரி கூறுகையில், ஆம்புலன்ஸ் தேவைக்காக எவ்வித அழைப்பும் வரப்படவில்லை. எனினும், தனது ஊழியர்களிடம் இது குறித்து விசாரிப்பதாக கூறியுள்ளார். மேலும், திம்மாப்பா தனியார் மருத்துவரை சென்று அணுகியது மிகப் பெரிய குற்றம் என்றும் அவர் கூறியுள்ளார்.

இதேபோன்று கடந்த ஆண்டு ஒடிசா மாநிலத்தில் பழங்குடியினத்தைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவரது மனைவி உடல்நலக் குறைவால் சிகிச்சை பலனின்றி உயிரிழந்தார். அவரது சடலத்தை வீட்டுக்கு எடுத்துச் செல்ல அவருக்கு ஆம்புலன்ஸ் வசதி மறுக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில், மனைவியின் உடலை சுமார் 12 கி.மீ., வரை தனது தோளில் சுமந்து கொண்டு சென்றார். இந்த கட்சிகள் ஊடகங்களில் வெளியனாதையடுத்து, அம்மாநில முதல்வரின் உத்தரவுப்படி இலவச ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சேவை அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

கேட்கும் திறன் இல்லாமல் பிறந்த ஒருவர், இன்று உலகமே போற்றும் ஒரு சிறந்த ஓவியராக மாறி உள்ளார். அவர் ராமலிங்கம். இவரது 40 வயதில் கண் பார்வையும் பேச்சும் தடைபடத் தொடங்கியது. ஆனாலும் ஓவியக்கலையை அவர் விடவில்லை. இன்று இவரது புகழ் உலகெங்கும் பரவி உள்ளது. குறிப்பாக காது கேளாதோர் மத்தியில் இவர் ஒரு கதாநாயகன். சமீபத்தில் சென்னையில் உள்ள லலித் கலா அகாடமியில் நடை பெற்ற ஓவிய கண்காட்சியில் இவரது ஓவியங்கள் மட்டும் அல்லாமல், இவரைப் போலவே காது கேளாதோர் வரைந்த ஓவியங்களையும், அதைப் பற்றிய குறிப்புகளையும் சொல்ல அந்த ஓவியர்களை அழைத்து பேச வைத்தார் ராமலிங்கம். எப்படி இவரால் அது முடிந்தது? என்று கேட்ட போது, தன்னைப் பற்றியும், தான் எப்படி அந்த ஓவியக் கண்காட்சியைச் சிறப்பாக நடத்த முடிந்தது என்றும் கூறுகிறார் ராமலிங்கம், அவரது மனைவி லதாவின் உதவியுடன்.

"நான் பிறந்தது முதலே காது கேளாமல் தான் இருந்தேன். எனது அத்தை மகன் கமல தியாகராஜன் ஓவியங்களை வரைவார். நானும் அவரைப் பார்த்து வரைய ஆரம்பித்தேன். என் ஓவிய ஆர்வத்தைப் பார்த்த எனது தந்தை, நான் எஸ்.எஸ்.எல்.சி. முடிந்தவுடன் என்னை சென்னை ஓவியக் கல்லூரியில் சேர்த்தார். அன்று ஆரம்பித்த இந்த ஓவியம் வரைவது, இன்று வரை தொடர்கிறது.

எனது வண்ண ஓவியம் முதன் முதலில் ஒரு வெளிநாட்டுப் போட்டிக்குச் சென்றது, காமன் வெல்த் விருதுக்குத்தான். அந்த விருது எனது 26 -ஆவது வயதில் கிடைத்தது. அதன் பிறகு எனக்கு பல்வேறு விருதுகள் கிடைத்துள்ளன. அவற்றில் மிக முக்கியமான விருதுகள் என்று பார்த்தால் அவை சார்லஸ் வாலஸ் டிரஸ்ட் (Charles Wallace Trust, UK) யு.கே, இந்த விருது எனக்கு இரண்டு முறை கிடைத்தது, 1995, 2000. அடுத்தது அமெரிக்காவில் உள்ள போலாக்-க்ராஸ்னர் பெளண்டேஷன் (Pollock Krasner Foundation), அளித்த விருது. இது 2000 -ஆம் ஆண்டு கிடைத்தது. பின்னர் யுனெஸ்கோ (UNESCO Aschberg Bursary) விருது 2005 -இல் கிடைத்தது. அதற்கு பிறகு 2009-இல் ஜப்பான் பெளண்டேஷன் (Japan Foundation) விருது வந்தது. ஸ்பெயின் நாட்டின் (Can Serrat) விருது 2010 -ஆம் ஆண்டில் கிடைத்தது. நம் நாட்டின் தேசிய விருது (National Award for the outstanding Creative Adult Persons with Disabilities) 2012 -ஆம் ஆண்டு கிடைக்கப் பெற்றேன்.

ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் வெளிநாட்டிலேயே எங்களைப்போன்றவர்களின் ஓவியக் கண்காட்சி நடைபெறுகிறது. நமது சென்னையில் ஏன் நடத்தக் கூடாது என்று சிலவருடங்களுக்கு முன் தோன்றியது. அந்த நினைப்பை செயலாக்க என்னைப் போன்ற மக்களிடம் பேச ஆரம்பித்தேன். சிலசமயம் வெப்-கேமரா மூலமும், சில சமயம் இ மெயில் மூலமும் என் எண்ணத்தைப் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டேன். சுமார் பத்து பேர்களிடம் பேசிய பின் அதில் மூன்று பேர் வர சம்மதித்தனர். அவர்களுக்கு நான் கூறியதெல்லாம், "எங்கள் நாட்டிற்கு வாருங்கள். பழமையான கோவில்களும், சிறந்த முறையில் பராமரிக்கப்படும் இயற்கை எழிலும் உங்களைக் கொள்ளை கொள்ளும்'' என்பதுதான்.

அதில் சீனாவில் இருந்து முஸியாயமெய் (Mu Xiaomei) என்ற பெண்மணியும், ஷி ஜிங்கியாங் (Shi Jingyang) என்ற ஆண் ஓவியரும், தென் கொரியாவில் இருந்து கிம், கியோ - சேங் (Kim, Kyo- Saeng) என்ற ஆண் ஓவியரும் வந்தனர். இவர்கள் அனைவரும் என்னை போலவே காது கேளாதவர்கள் தான். அவர்களது ஓவியங்களும் இந்த கண்காட்சியில் வைக்கப்பட்டன. நமது நாட்டை பற்றியும் அதிலும் குறிப்பாக நமது சென்னையைப் பற்றியும் அதன் கலாசார, பாரம்பரிய, இயற்கை எழிலையும் பார்த்து மகிழ்ந்ததோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல், என்னையும், என் குடும்பத்தையும் பார்த்து நன்றி கூறியதோடு, சந்தோஷமும் அடைந்தனர்.

என்னைப் பொருத்தவரை என் மனைவி லதா தான் இதுவரை என் வளர்ச்சிக்கு உறுதுணையாக இருப்பவர். அவர் எல்லாரையும் போல் சாதாரணமாக இருப்பவர். நான் இப்படி இருக்கிறேன் என்று தெரிந்தும் என்னை மணந்தவர். எனக்கு இரு குழந்தைகள். நான் சமீபத்தில் தான் தேசியமயமாக்கப்பட்ட வங்கிப்பணியில் இருந்து ஓய்வு பெற்றேன். என்னைப் பொருத்தவரை எந்த உடல் ஊனமும் சாதனைக்குத் தடையில்லை என்றுதான் கூறுவேன்'' என்றார் ராமலிங்கம். அவரது மனைவி லதாவும் தனது கணவர் சிரிப்பில் பங்கு கொண்டு புன்னைகைத்தார்.

தேசிய அளவிலான காது கேளாதோர் விளையாட்டு போட்டிக்கு வீரர்கள் தேர்வு

சென்னை நேரு விளையாட்டு அரங்கில் நடைபெற உள்ள காது கேளாதோருக்கான விளையாட்டுப்போட்டியில் கலந்துகொள்ளும் தமிழக வீரர்களுக்கான தேர்வு திருநெல்வேலியில் 2 நாட்கள் நடைபெற்றது.

காது கேளாதோருக்கான 21-வது தேசிய அளவிலான விளையாட்டுப்போட்டிகள் அடுத்த மாதம் (மார்ச்) 28-ந்தேதி முதல் 31-ந்தேதி வரை சென்னை நேரு விளையாட்டு அரங்கில் நடைபெற உள்ளது. இதில் கலந்துகொள்ள தமிழக வீரர்களை தேர்வு செய்வதற்கான தேர்வு போட்டிகள் திருநெல்வேலியில் 2 நாட்கள் நடைபெற்றது. இதில் கோவை, திருப்பூர், மதுரை, ஊட்டி, கிருஷ்ணகிரி, சென்னை உள்பட 17 மாவட்டங்களில் இருந்து 350 வீரர்கள் கலந்துகொண்டனர். இதில் திருப்பூர் மாவட்டத்தில் இருந்து மட்டும் 31 வீரர்கள் கலந்துகொண்டனர்.

இவர்களுக்கு 100 மீட்டர், 200 மீட்டர், 400 மீட்டர், 800 மீட்டர், 1,500 மீட்டர் ஓட்டம், 400 மீட்டர், 1,600 மீட்டர் தொடர் ஓட்டம், குண்டு எறிதல், வட்டு எறிதல், உயரம் தாண்டுதல், கைப்பந்து போன்ற தடகள போட்டிகள் நடைபெற்றன. இதில் ஆண்கள் பிரிவில் திருப்பூரை சேர்ந்த சுதிர்ஷ் 5ஆயிரம் மீட்டர், 1,500 மீட்டர் ஓட்டப்பந்தயங்களில் தங்கப்பதக்கங்கள் வென்றார்.

பெண்கள் பிரிவில் சூர்யா 800 மீட்டர், 400 மீட்டர் ஓட்டத்திலும், ரத்தினம் குண்டு எறிதல், வட்டு எறிதல் ஆகிய போட்டிகளிலும் தங்கப்பதக்கம் வென்றனர். திருப்பூர் அணி 122 புள்ளிகள் பெற்று முதலிடமும், கைப்பந்து போட்டியில் திருப்பூர் பெண்கள் அணி முதலிடமும் பெற்றுள்ளது. இந்த வகையில் திருப்பூர் மாவட்டத்தில் 12 ஆண்களும், 15 பெண்களும் என்று மொத்தம் 27 பேர் தேசிய அளவிலான போட்டிக்கு தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

Hearing & speech impaired kids want constitutional recognition for sign language

INDORE: Children with hearing and speech impairments in the city wrote postcards to president Pranab Mukherjee and prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to mark international mother language day and urged them to give constitutional recognition to sign language.

"With constitutional recognition like regional languages the sign language will benefit around 78 lakh hearing and speech impaired people of India" said Gyanendra Purohit from Anand Service Society, which works for hearing and speech impaired students.

He added that once the sign language will be included in linguistic minority speech impaired persons will start getting preference under various government schemes.

"Sign language works like a mother tongue of the hearing and speech impaired. In absence of proper planning, less than 10 percent of these students continue their studies to higher secondary level," Purohit said.

He stressed to ensure availability of sign language teachers in all eight centres of the city. He also said that sign language can be included in curriculum of student as mode of communication. It can also be introduced as optional subject to pursue higher education.

"Like Finland and Uganda, sign language should be given the status of one of the official languages here. It will help us to pursue higher education," the postcards read.

Purohit said, "In India, sign language has not been even introduced as optional language in the primary school. There are around 2300 hearing and speech impaired students receiving education in as many as eight special schools of the district. In absence of trained teachers to communicate in sign language, the students find it difficult to understand the subjects. The government should also think in this regard" he added.

Kingsley David, founder of the online news portal for the hearing impaired, Sign TV, is striving to bridge the gap between the hearing impaired and the able-bodied through his initiatives.

Ever experienced that terrifying temporary hearing loss while the plane takes off? The world around you turns into just images, the sounds muted. For some, that’s their whole life.

“There are over 5.5 crore hearing-impaired people in India. And hardly 5% of them are employed. There’s rampant unawareness about the hearing impaired. The able-bodied don’t know the sign language and thus for the hearing impaired, there’s no way to communicate with them and gel with society. The lack of resources leaves them uninformed and unaware. They feel isolated,” says Kingsley David.

Working towards his aim of aiding the integration of the hearing impaired with society, Kingsley has started the online news portal for the hearing impaired: Sign TV.

Sign TV is aimed at educating the hearing impaired in the Indian sign language and keeping them informed on the latest developments in news, healthcare, education and more. The channel also features health segments with information about different diseases and their prevention.

An employee at an IT park, “Techno Park,” in Kerala, he has also started the initiative “Talking Hands: Creating Conversation,” wherein he conducts sign language classes for the able-bodied employees. Techno Park has over 45 hearing-impaired employees, and thanks to the efforts of Kingsley and his hearing-impaired colleague Sanu Chukkri, over 100 able-bodied employees have completed the first level course in sign language.

Kingsley, who was raised by his hearing-impaired aunt, had seen the issues she faced on a day-to-day basis very closely. Later, when he graduated and started working, Sanu joined his company. The two became friends and Kingsley realised that there was so much that could be done for the hearing-impaired community.

“After befriending Sanu, I got a chance to reconnect with the old memories of my aunt. I saw that the problems that she had faced back then, Sanu was facing even today. There were six hearing-impaired employees in our company back then and they had absolutely no contact with others. I could sense that the gap was very wide,” says Kingsley.

Talking Hands received an incredible response from Kingsley’s fellow employees. His initiative also received an award for creating a great place to work.

As much as it was necessary to make the able-bodied aware of the challenges faced by the hearing impaired, it was also important to create awareness and opportunities among, and for, the hearing impaired.

“Information is not an option; it’s a right, right? Unfortunately, despite the high number of people who are hearing impaired, our country is still lagging in its efforts for the provision of facilities to them.This communication issue exists widely in media outreach. Few resources are available for reaching the hearing impaired. I interacted with many activists and individuals and decided to set up Sign TV, the first online news portal for them,” says Kingsley.

Kingsley produces regular news bulletins in sign language along with instructional videos. The tutorials, health videos, as well as the news bulletins, are also archived on the online blog.

He received the initial funding for Sign TV from a close friend who has settled in Spain. Currently, he rents a studio for the production of the news bulletin and has two news readers. It gets difficult at times to manage to run the enterprise since he has no source of funding anymore.

However, nothing can dampen Kingsley’s spirit. He has a zillion ideas in his head and is eager to execute them all. His next venture is an art festival that he is organising in Trivandrum, where 25 disabled artists will paint live during a day-long event and voice their aspirations, dreams and issues through their art. Art for All is set to take place on February 25 and Kingsley couldn’t be more excited.

“Art is the best medium to communicate and from where I stand, all I can see is a huge communication gap. I hope art helps bridge this gap and bring all people together,” he says.

In a first, differently-abled kids invited

27.02.2017 INDORE: For the first time, differently-abled children from three special schools of the city were invited to science exhibition organised at RRCAT on occasion of National Science Day on Saturday.

A special interactive session, wherein RRCAT director along with senior scientists had a talk with the kids, was arranged before they began their tour for exhibition.

Attending such an exhibition for the first time, many students here were motivated to choose science as a career in future.

"Seeing these experiments and projects the students also have started thinking that they can also become scientists as it is all practical work that they also can do. Earlier they were forced to choose subjects like arts thinking of their limitations, but here they got to know that they can make a career in science," said Monica Purohit, director of Anand Service Society.

With this initiative RRCAT is also planning to come forward for the differently-abled students, who are willing to build a career in science. "We want these students to come up and do wonders in the field of science. We will also help them in the long run to study science," said RRCAT director Dr P A Naik.

Deaf and mute students like Karan Vasuniya and Fatema Shakir have also decided to become a scientist in the future after witnessing the science exhibition.

A class 9 student, Fatema, who was at RRCAT from Saradarpur, Dhar especially for the exhibition said, "I am very happy that I came to Indore for this exhibition and saw everything live. I will go back and tell my siblings and friends also about it and the scope for us in the field of science. I am now inspired to become a scientist in future."

NISH to host Workshop on Indian Sign Language

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 26 (PTI): National Institute of Speech and Hearing will host an international workshop on ‘Importance of Indian Sign Language in Deaf Education’ at its Akkulam campus here from March 1 to 3.

The workshop aims to share the experiences of teachers teaching the hearing impaired in such schools and discuss innovative methods for effective teaching.

Experts in the field and faculty members from NISH will lead the lectures, discussions and interactive sessions with the educators reflecting each others’ methodology and own practices during the three-day workshop.

Experts, including Madan Vasishta (former Associate Professor of Gallaudet University, US), Rajesh Ketkar (Director of Ishara Foundation and General Secretary of Mook Badhir Mandal, Vadodara), Jagdeep Kaur (Head of Academics, Bajaj Institute of Learning, Dehradun) and Sunil Sahasrabudhe (Consultant of Signex India) and NISH Honorary Director G Vijayaraghavan will speak during the occasion, a release said here.

Deaf Dachshund learns sign language to try and find new home

Bob, who’s around 10 months old, was handed into a rescue centre when his previous owners couldn’t look after him anymore.

They had originally brought Bob and his brother over from Hungary as puppies, but shortly after arriving back in the UK they decided to give him up for adoption.

They thought they wouldn’t be able to cope with both dogs – and because Bob was deaf and had problems with gait and balance, they thought he would be much harder work.

Rescuers at The Mayhew Animal Home have since spent hours teaching Bob sign language, so that he’s able to communicate with his owners.

hey’ve also taught him how to walk on a lead, they’ve toilet trained him, and are urging him to use his other senses to compensate for his lack of hearing.

Lisa Guiney, a dog adoption officer at the Mayhew, said: ‘Bob is a lovely, comical little boy, who is so confident and doesn’t let his deafness or balance problems get in the way.

‘He compensates for his lack of hearing with his huge personality.‘He has quickly picked up lots of commands like sit, stay, down, come and a few tricks too, by using body language, hand signals, and reading faces.

‘Rehoming a deaf dog like Bob can be an incredibly rewarding experience – we are hoping to find someone who understands his needs and can give him the attention and care that he requires.’

TBI Blogs: Parents of Hearing-Impaired Children Need Support, and Many Are Stepping Up to Help

Is parenting any different when the child has a difficulty like hearing impairment? Drawing upon years of work in this field, Sreela Bose shares insights into her nuanced understanding of the relationship that parents and their deaf children can develop.

A little eight-year-old girl tells her mother, “Mamma, do you know that God made mothers because He can’t be everywhere?” This remark reflects her confidence in her mother, and her dependence on her. A father’s role is no less important. He has very important messages for his little one. Messages of love, security, a sense of belonging, and fun—messages that help his child to grow into a self-reliant, confident adult.

Together, parents – mother and father – make up the team that is responsible for giving their little hearing-impaired infant the very first gift—that of life. With it comes the adventure of equipping the child with the necessary skills and abilities to live and enjoy life. An adventure filled with challenges, successes, trials, happiness, pain…and the hope of fulfillment. An adventure that all parents go through, because that is what parenting is about. We are reminded of the famous Chinese saying, “When we give life, we become responsible for that life for the rest of our lives.”

Is parenting any different when the child has a difficulty like hearing impairment? It is difficult to find a satisfactory answer to this question.

According to a report on a Needs Assessment Study undertaken by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) in the UK, “parents of deaf children strive for their children to be as fulfilled as hearing children.”

For some this will mean treating their children the same; for others, it will mean treating their child in a different way. However, it is in the actual working out of how it should be the same and how it needs to be different that parents need to make the “difficult day-to-day decisions.” These decisions are an outcome of their own parenting experiences with their child, and need not be the same as anyone else’s. The NDCS study further indicates that “there is an authority with which parents can speak about their child which nobody else can, and this is a source of inspiration and hope” and of strength.

Each child is has individual strengths and needs, and individual coping and adjustment skills. It is hardly likely that every child will respond to the same intervention strategies. This is seen often as a “failure” in the child. It also adds to the parents’ “pre-existing sense of inadequacy”, especially the mother, who is the person who spends the most time with the child. She feels she is not doing what is expected of her as a mother.

Fortunately, a section of parents in India have begun to realise this, and are now making discernible efforts to identify their child’s needs and the best ways of meeting those needs.

Accepting uncertainty and the disappointment of unrealised potential in the child is about parenting a hearing-impaired child in a system that is not always responsive to his/her needs and abilities.

It is important for parents to have access to good, comprehensive information to enable them to make decisions which parents of hearing children are unlikely to have to do. For example, they need information about the choice of communication method, the management of hearing aids, and understanding and familiarising themselves with another culture—the deaf culture.

The flip side is that sometimes professionals, in their enthusiasm, stress so heavily on parents becoming different kinds of teachers and therapists that the additional skills and knowledge required to respond to the child’s special needs could become in themselves the essence of parenting. The other equally valuable aspects of being Ma and Papa – like the joy that a parent can get just by being with a child – lose their significance.

Apart from seeking professional support, parents have been known to form their own “help” groups where they find strength and emotional support, because a parent can speak to another parent in a way that nobody else can.

Three important need areas that such help groups could address are:

• Younger parents can meet parents of older children to learn about what they might encounter next, and relieve their anxieties about the future.
• Parents of older children could pass on strategies, philosophies, and approaches to new parents i.e. the development of ‘lay’ knowledge which only parents, through their experiences, can possess.
• Parents, when they meet other parents, provide a way of mentoring and support for each other over time. The recognition of parents as a resource for each other is not something that diminishes with the age of the child.

Parents may perhaps need to feel reassured that being the parents of a hearing-impaired child involves the same skills as those required when parenting hearing children. It is possible for them to acquire the additional new skills within this parenting role.

Parents who have been already been through similar experiences can best provide this reassurance.

Finally, I’d like to relay a message from a parent. A famous otolgist once told Mrs. Spencer Tracy that her son, John, had a profound sensorineural loss that he could do nothing about. “But,” he continued in the same breath, “John can learn to do almost anything that a hearing person can do. But you have a JOB!” Two years later, a well-known neurologist confirmed the diagnosis and commented, “Mrs. Tracy, you are blessed among women. Yours can be a very interesting life.”

“These are moments I shall never forget,” is Mrs. Tracy’s message to us. “It [having a child with a hearing impairment] is not a blessing one would pray for, but certainly, mine has been an interesting life.” Mrs. Spencer Tracy overcame her own tragedy and went on to found the prestigious John Tracy Clinic in the USA.

Centres of excellence have also been set up by several Indian parents. They have transcended their own pain and brought hope and opportunity to hearing impaired children other than their own.

These centres have been a tower of courage, comfort, and encouragement for other parents as well.

We cannot ignore, or underestimate, the strength of parents. For it is on this strength that their children build their lives.

தமிழ்நாடு மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் கூட்டமைப்பின் அறக்கட்டளை சார்பில், மாநில அளவிலான, 16வது மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் விளையாட்டு போட்டிகள் நடந்தன. அந்த போட்டிகள், எழும்பூர் நேரு பூங்கா விளையாட்டு மைதானத்தில் நடைபெற்றது.

ஓட்டப்பந்தயம், குண்டு எறிதல், நீளம் தாண்டுதல், கபடி, சக்கர நாற்காலி கூடைபந்து என, 48

Father ferries dead deaf daughter on moped

BENGALURU: A 20-year-old hearing-impaired girl died allegedly after calls for an ambulance to rush her to hospital elicited no response. Her father, a jasmine vendor, ferried her body home on his moped.

D Thimmappa had ridden 6km with her lying semiconscious on his pillion, his son holding her tight, to the primary health centre in Kodigenahalli in Madhugiri taluk, Tumakuru district, last Sunday. He found no help there.

T Ratnamma, a resident of Veerapura near Madhugiri, about 150 km from Bengaluru, had complained of severe fever and cold on Saturday morning. With Rs 150 in his pocket, Thimmappa took his eldest daughter to the health centre at Kodigenahalli, 6 km away.

Doctors gave Ratnamma a few tablets before sending her home. By night, Ratnamma, through gestures, told her father she was not feeling comfortable. Thimmappa said he called for an ambulance to shift Ratnamma to a hospital in Madhugiri, 21km away. Thimmappa then took Ratnamma to a private clinic in Kodi genahalli, where Dr Raju administered three injections and gave her pills.

" We returned home around 11 pm, again on my moped. Ratnamma did not sleep through the night. Early morning, she started shivering, and I could see her struggle to breathe," Thimmappa told TOI on Monday.

Ratnamma's sister-in-law Varalakshmi made her coffee, which she had with biscults, around 4am By dawn, her condition worsened.Thimmappa decided to take her to Madhugiri, and called for an ambulance. As on the previous day, the ambulance did not turn up.

Around 7.30 am, Ratnamma began losing consciousness. Around 8am, Thimmappa again rode to the Kodigenahalli health centre, with his son Raju carrying Ratnamma on the pillion.

"We reached the health centre where doctors said we would have to shift her to the Madhugiri hospital, as her condition was serious. I knew I wouldn't find an ambulance, so we went back to Dr Raju, who declared her brought dead," Thimmappa's son said.

The father and son requested the doctor to provide transportation to shift the body, but he allegedly threw up his hands. The duo took the body on the moped to the health centre, hoping to get an ambulance. But the staff told them they cannot provide an ambulance to shift a body.

"I had Rs 95 left in my pocket. Private transport was beyond my means. I rode back home with Raju carrying her body on the pillion," a distraught Thimmappa said.

`NO CALLS WERE MADE'

"According to our internal reports, Thimmappa never called for an ambulance nor did he come to the primary health centre. His biggest mistake was to visit a private doctor. I will crosscheck the facts again with my staff. We don't provide an ambulance to shift a body. The next of kin should make their own arrangements., said Rangaswamy the district health officer, Tumakuru.

உண்மையான மாற்றுத்திறனாளியுடன் நடித்த அபிநயா!

மாற்றுத்திறனாளி அபிநயா, உண்மையான மாற்றுத் திறனாளியுடன் நடித்த படம்தான் ‘நிசப்தம்’.

மாற்றுத்திறனாளி அபிநயா ‘நாடோடிகள்’ படம் மூலம் தமிழில் அறிமுகமானார். இவரை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியது நடிகரும், இயக்குனருமான சசிகுமார். நடிகை அபிநயா வாய் பேச முடியாத காது கேளாதவர். ‘நடித்தால், நல்ல படங்களில் மட்டுமே நடிப்பேன்’ என்ற முடிவுடன் தற்போது இருந்து வருகிறார்.

சசிகுமார் படங்களில் நடித்த அபிநயா, இதுவரை இரண்டாவது ஹீரோயினாகவே நடித்து வந்தார். தற்போது இவர், ‘நிசப்தம்’ என்ற படத்தில், ஹீரோயினாக, அதுவும், ஒரு குழந்தைக்கு அம்மாவாக நடித்துள்ளார். இந்தப் படத்தில் , இவருக்கு ஜோடியாக நடித்திருப்பவர் கன்னட நடிகர் துருவா. இவரும் அபிநயாவைப் போல உண்மையில் வாய்பேச முடியாத, காது கேளாத மாற்றுத் திறனாளி என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

மும்பையில் தேசிய 'சைலன்ட் ஒலிம்பிக்- 2017' சாதித்தது செவித்திறன் குறையுடையோர் பள்ளி

மும்பையில் நடந்த தேசிய 'சைலன்ட் ஒலிம்பிக்-2017' போட்டியில், சிவகாசி செவித்திறன் குறையுடையோர் பள்ளி மாணவர்கள் தங்கம் உள்ளிட்ட 27 பதக்கங்களை பெற்றனர்.மும்பையில் செவித்திறன் குறையுடையோர் மாணவர்கள் பங்கேற்ற தேசிய அளவிலான 'சைலண்ட் ஒலிம்பிக்-2017' விளையாட்டு போட்டிகள் நடந்தது. இதில் இந்தியாவில் உள்ள காதுகேளாதோர் பள்ளிகளில் இருந்து 500 பேர் பங்கேற்றனர். சிவகாசி செவித்திறன் குறையுடையோர் உயர்நிலை பள்ளி மாணவ, மாணவியர்கள் 34 பேர் கலந்து கொண்டனர். இவர்கள் 13 தங்கம், 9 வெள்ளி, 5 வெண்கலம் என 27 பதக்கங்களை வென்றுள்ளனர்.

Soon, hearing impaired too can get driving licences

Kannur: Here is a good news for those suffering from hearing problems. They too will be eligible for a driving licence and the Road Transport Ministry has issued a directive to state governments in this regard. 

Several cases are pending in different courts on the matter and one such case filed by Amit Ashok Thribhuvan against Mumbai RTO at Bombay High Court has been the turning point for this crucial decision. 

A high level meeting chaired by Transport Joint Secretary last year had discussed the matter after the case came up for hearing at the High Court. An expert advice was then sought from doctors at AIIMS. The decision to provide licence to hearing impaired came after considering all the suggestions. 

The authorities have concluded that driving is primarily a process that needs clear eyesight. 

A written test and road test will be conducted like others. A sticker can be pasted on to the vehicle indicating that the driver is hearing impaired. Therefore, the Road Transport Ministry has directed the states not to dismiss the applications of people with impaired hearing. 

Many advanced nations are giving driving licence to hearing impaired.

Light Bulbs, Placards, Sign Language: Few Things Used in a Delhi Café Run by the Differently Abled

A smiling face greets you on entering, the dishes here bear distinct codes and signs, the customers are given notepads to write their orders, there are placards for frequent requests, and each table has a light bulb, much like those in aircraft, to call out for the servers. Welcome to Echoes, a café in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area that employs people with hearing and speech impairment.

Started in December 2015, Echoes is the brainchild of a group of six friends – Sahib Sarna, Shivansh Kanwar, Gaurav Kanwar, Sahil Gulati, Prateek Babbar and Kshitij Behl, all driven by the same passion.
“We all wanted to pursue our dreams and set up something that reflected our vision. We wanted to motivate people to follow the path they choose and hence came up with Echoes. We worked on building a place with high level of interactivity, motivating interiors, scrumptious food and a social purpose,” says Sahib.

With a seating capacity of close to 40, the café currently employs six to seven differently abled persons who manage the guests by taking their orders and making them comfortable.

“We will soon be expanding and increasing the number many folds. The staff is indeed wonderful to work with. With procedures designed to suit them, they are fully capable of managing the guests on their own. We will soon be training them in other areas as well,” says Sahib.

Initially, Sarna and his friends had visited the Noida Deaf Society, a school for the hearing impaired, who helped them get the right people to recruit as their staff. “We then trained them on our procedures and now we get people through our existing staff contacts and open online sources. There are no special tie-ups with any group,” he shares.
He adds that they the staff just need to be trained in certain soft skills. “We believe that domain-specific skills can be imparted on the job. When they are hired we train them using our standard set procedures for a few days and few days of on the job training,” he says.

The café serves a mix of Continental, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, and American cuisine. It’s a hit among students in the area, which has many Delhi University colleges.

“Students are the building block. We wanted to start with this market so that our message reaches the right ears. However, we don’t serve any specific community or age group. The place is open to all and we managed a place where all age groups can have a good time together. From families to corporate staff to students, you can see all enjoying at Echoes,” says Sahib.

However, every success story has its share of stumbling blocks. And Sahib agrees that they too faced challenges while setting up the place. Among the major ones, he points out, was the communication gap and designing the system that allows customers and staff to be able to interact efficiently.

But they managed to surpass it, and have received an overwhelming response over the years.

Talking about their pleasant memories, he says, “There have been many interesting experiences like customers learning sign language from our staff. It is a pleasure to see differently abled people visiting the cafe to have a good time. Daily challenges are there but we make sure we are getting permanent solutions for such challenges.”

Twenty-three-year-old Ajay, who has been working at Echoes for a year now, is more confident than he ever was. “I love to serve the guests and interact with them. And what gives me utmost happiness is when our customers try and talk to us in our language, using signs,” he says.

After making their presence felt in the capital city, Echoes is aiming to be up and running in Bengaluru’s Koramangala area in first week of March, which will have a seating capacity of 70.

Affordable video calling a boon for the speech,hearing impaired

Mobile revolution may have swept the country long time ago, but for the visually-impaired, the real benefit of mobile communication technology had remained incomplete, as it was largely restricted to messages and internet access only.

But now, with more penetration of affordable 4G and increasing video-calling apps like WhatsApp, Skype and social networking sites such as Facebook messenger among others, the technology has now become equally useful for the hearing and speech impaired as well.

They can now use the sign language to communicate through video calls over mobile phones.

Parul Passi, who runs a skill development centre in the city, said the video calling affordability is empowering to the hearing impaired as they are able to communicate in their primary language — the sign language.

“Earlier, their communication was restricted to SMS or social media, but still, because sign language is the first language they learn, it is much easier for them to communicate using this language,” he said.

Premod Dada, General Secretary of Ludhiana Educational Trust, that runs the School for the Deaf on Hambran Road, said: “Video calling and smartphones need to be made even more affordable for them. It will definitely benefit them. The government should also come up with some plan to make technology accessible to them. Despite 4G connectivity having become relatively affordable, only a fraction of people and students having hearing impairment can afford to buy smartphones,” he said.

Gurdeep, who can neither hear nor speak, while communicating by writing an application on mobile, said the recent spurt in video calling facility through smartphones has become useful for the hearing impaired and they were happy to be able to communicate freely with visual medium.

Minor charged with raping hearing and speech impaired tribal woman in Bihar

A hearing and speech impaired tribal woman was allegedly raped by a minor in Bihar’s Kaimur district, about 190km from state capital Patna, on Thursday evening.

Police said the incident took place at Mahuar village in Ramgarh police station area when the 40-year-old woman was cutting grass in a field.

An FIR had been registered under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for rape) against the accused, a Class 8 student, on the statement of the victim’s husband, the police said, adding the woman had been admitted at the government hospital here. The medical examination of the woman was conducted late on Thursday night, they said.

Kaimur superintendent of police Harpreet Kaur said as the victim was speech impaired the accused would be paraded along with some other boys of his age before her for identification. The accused was minor and action would be taken against him only if the medical report confirmed rape and his involvement was established, Kaur added.

Babies exposed to nicotine at higher risk for hearing loss

New Delhi: New research suggests that babies exposed to nicotine before and after birth can cause a child to have hearing problems due to abnormal development in the auditory brainstem.

Mothers who smoke, use e-cigarettes or nicotine replacement therapy have an increased risk of premature delivery, decreased child birth weight, and an increased rate of sudden infant death.

The findings showed that the auditory brainstem - an area of the brain which plays a role in analysing sound patterns - may have abnormal development in kids when pregnant mothers are exposed to nicotine before and after giving birth.

Children with impaired auditory brainstem function are likely to have learning difficulties and problems with language development.

"If mothers smoke during pregnancy and their children show learning difficulties at school, they should be tested for auditory processing deficits," said lead author Ursula Koch, professor at the Free University of Berlin in Germany.

For the study, the team exposed the offspring of the mice to nicotine before birth and via the mother's milk until they were three weeks old - an age that is approximately equivalent to primary school children.

Analysing the brains of the mice offsprings, the researchers found that neurons that get input from the cochlea - sensory organ in the ear - were less effective at transmitting signals to other auditory brainstem neurons in mice exposed to nicotine.

Moreover, these signals were transmitted with less precision, which deteriorates the coding of sound patterns. These could be part of the underlying causes for auditory processing difficulties in children of heavy smoking mothers, the researchers said.

"We do not know how many other parts of the auditory system are affected by nicotine exposure. More research is needed about the cumulative effect of nicotine exposure and the molecular mechanisms of how nicotine influences the development of neurons in the auditory brainstem," Koch said.

The research has been published in The Journal of Physiology.

First learning, stitching, drafting school for hearing impaired opens

Amritsar, February 18

A skill development institute for stitching and drafting was inaugurated by Dr Inderjit Kaur and Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahney at the Pingalwara complex at Manawala. This will be the first exclusive institute in Punjab providing training in stitching and drafting to the hearing impaired in sign language along with normal persons.

This has been made possible through the combined efforts of Dr Inderjit Kaur, president, All-India Pingalwara Charitable Society and Padma Shri Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Chairman, Sun Foundation.

Dr Inderjit Kaur has always been in the forefront for promoting the cause of people with disabilities and already has three schools for deaf children functioning in three districts of Punjab. Surya Kiran is a leading project of Sun Foundation for imparting vocational and skill development training to the poor girls and the women and has a large number of centres in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi. Sahney said his mother was extremely attached to the cause of Pingalwara and her wish has resulted in the first project for the hearing impaired in Punjab.

Training for the deaf persons is being provided through a qualified teacher proficient in sign language. The school has 16 students in its first batch and includes nine deaf students. Teaching with modern aids and well planned curriculum will help the students to find good job opportunities. The entire training is free of cost.

On this occasion coordinator Sun Foundation, Baljeet kaur Johal, Jai Singh, Administrator, Manawala Pingalwara, R P Singh Director of Pingalwara school and other were present.
