An elderly deaf man saved his family by alarming his younger son who later helped other members of the family to escape the fire. The family is under huge debts as their only source of income - a meat shop was razed to the ground in the fire, along with the savings and their identity proves and other documents.
Ten years ago Kala Mia (69) was slapped by a policeman in Bangladeshwhich took away his hearing ability and was left to struggle in the world. But it was Mia who saw fire flames in the house and alarmed his sons about the possible threat.
Speaking to DNA, Mia's son Mohammad Abdullah broke down and said, "For these 10 years, I saw my father as a disabled man but today I realised I was wrong, it is only because of him that we are alive and today my children are breathing because of my father."
Abdullah had been running a meat shop in the area to earn his livelihood, but during the fire, all his chicken were burnt alive and he was left with a debt of over Rs 50,000 which he had taken to stock the birds. "I had brought those chicken on loan from the wholesaler, now with my savings, and documents gone I need to find a way to pay-off the debts," Abdullah said.
Although, everyone in the family was safe Abdullah's wife sustained minor injuries in the fire which gutted his house.
