Mumbai, Apr 13: Two speech and hearing impaired girls have registered a complaint alleging that they were sexually assaulted at a boarding school for children with speech and hearing disabilities in Karjat in Maharashtra. The case was registered on March 30 after which the police began investigation and found that not just the two complainants, other girl students at the school also have similar stories to tell and that they were sexually assaulted by the caretaker. The medical reports of the two complainants have confirmed assault. The 44-year-old caretaker, Ram Shankar Bembre, has been arrested.
After the medical reports of the two minor girls confirmed assault, the police also conducted medical tests of other girl students of the school. The police have also recorded statements of over seven girls and will be speaking to more. The police are taking the help of a sign language interpreter to record the statements of the students.
Police said that that almost all the girls in the school have said that they were molested or sexually assaulted by the caretaker. Several girls had alleged that he would touch them inappropriately. Not just that, the police said that the caretaker is also accused of filming girls in the bathroom or while attending nature’s call.
The school is funded by the social justice department and had been granted government recognition in 2012. It has been shut since the complaint was filed and probe is underway. Reports say that the boarding school is set to lose its recognition. The principal of the school said that she did not know of any such incidents till the time a case was filed.
The case comes at a time when there is outrage in the country over crime against women and children. While a 17-year-old has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of having raped her in June 2017, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua, an 8-year-old was allegedly raped and killed by six men who had held her in captivity in a temple in January 2018.
