Padma Shri awardee Dr JM Hans is all set to operate free cochlear implant surgeries on three deaf persons at an event to be organised by All India Pingalwara Charitable Society on April 28 at its Manawala complex.
Dr Inderjit Kaur, president, All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Amritsar, said, “We have got performed such surgeries in the past too. The society will bear the cost of around Rs 7 lakh each for surgeries on Sukhmanpreet (8), Manbir (5) and Parvinder (26).”
Talking about the implant, she said, “A cochlear implant is an electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf. The surgical implant which is planted in the inner ear is activated by a device worn outside the ear.”
Patients have been selected by a team of doctors, headed by Dr Jagdeepak Singh, Prof ENT Government Medical College, Amritsar.
Along with the live surgery, a CME and seminar on deafness will be conducted on April 29, which will be attended by Dr Ashok Gupta, Prof ENT, PGI, Chandigarh; Dr Vikas Kakkar, Prof of ENT, PGI, Rohtak; Dr Jasveer Singh from City Hospital attached to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi; Dr Satish Mehta, Dr Vanita Sarin, Prof in SGRD, Dr Dhirendra Khushwaha from New Delhi, Dr Prahlad Duggal, Dr Budhiraja, Prof ENT, Adesh College, Bathinda, Dr Amrik Singh, Dr AP Singh, additional secretary SGRD Institute of Medical Science.
