60-years-old Hearing impaired Man Builds "e-bikes" By Recycling E-waste

A differently-abed man from Gujarat has stunned the automobile engineers with his inventions. Using e-waste like discarded vehicle parts, TV remotes, mobiles and laptops, the 60-year old man has built battery-operated bikes and three-wheeler vehicles.

Vishnu Patel from Surat was born with impaired hearing. After his retirement, he wanted to do something for the differently-abled community.

With no prior training in electrical engineering or funds, he claims that he has built seven battery operated vehicles - which include two-wheeler and three-wheeler. He calls them "e-bikes".

"People throw away waste but I am making bikes out of it. I want to make three-wheelers for the differently-abled community, using which, they can give their families a ride too," he said.

Since these vehicles are battery operated, there are no emissions and hence they are eco-friendly too, he said. He aspires to make customised vehicles for the differently-abled.

"If Rs. 20 lakh loan is granted to me, I can make a vehicle which will bring laurels to India," Mr Patel said.

Similarly, a couple in Pune facilitates public hygiene solution for women, giving it a hint of aesthetics by converting scrapped old buses into toilets.

Pushing the initiative under 'Ti for Toilet', the duo Rajeev Khera and Ulka Sadalkar in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation are giving an edge to women sanitation in the busiest areas of Pune city for a higher footfall.

Hoping to beat the menace where even the available toilets are still unkempt and stinky, making it harder for pregnant and menstruating women to use the toilets, this initiative is revamping the basic sanitation. The buses although could be mobile, are deliberately kept stationed at a peculiar place so women are aware of their location in case of need.

These exquisite public toilets include a shower, western and Indian toilets, washbasins, drinking water, diaper changing station and sanitary napkins for sale. These buses turned into toilets run on solar energy, have TV screens installed that run videos of women sanitation. Every bus has an attendant and technician to keep timely checks on the functioning. The bus charges Rs. 5 for their services.

A group of hearing impaired children taught a thing or two both to tourists and the managements of resorts dotting the Dooars in north Bengal. Out to attend a nature study-cum-adventure camp at Rocky Island in Samsing a few days ago, the group of 23 girls and boys found the banks of River Murti littered and went out of their way to clean up the mess.

“The camp was organized by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), East Zone Committee, in association with Pratidhwani (a state-level federation of associations of parents of children with hearing impairment). The camp was held from February 12 to 15. As they were carrying out their routine activities, they found the riverbank clogged with garbage. They took up the clean-up programme on their own. Maybe this will serve as a lesson for irresponsible tourists and their local hosts,” said Tapas Paul, course-in-charge, Nature Study-cum-Adventure Camp, IMF, East Zone Committee.

The children packed up the garbage in 15 bags, three of them bursting at the seams with empty liquor bottles. The children also picked up tetra packs, cans, polythene bags and plastic wrappers. The garbage bags were handed over to Samsing gram panchayat for disposal.

City life can really take a toll on you. It's not just the smoke-clouded air, the stress, and the fast food you're subjecting yourself to on a regular basis, it's the constant noise you have to deal with.

And according to the WHO, it's making our young people go deaf, thanks to self-inflicted noise pollution.

The World Health Organisation recently released the results of a study on noise pollution and its effects on us when present everyday. They estimate that 1.1 billion people around the world, between the ages of 12 to 35, are risking hearing loss everyday.

The safe threshold for loud sounds humans can stand is 85 decibles (dB) for eight hours or 100dB for 15 minutes. Anymore than that can be painful and can damage your inner ear. To put that into perspective, normal conversation happens at about 60 decibels.

Nearly 50 percent of teenagers and young adults then are exposed to unsafe levels of sound from the use of personal audio devices, the report says, and around 40 percent are exposed to potentially damaging levels of sound from things like clubs and concerts.

‘‘நான் மாநில அளவிலான முன்னாள் கூடைப்பந்து வீரன். அந்நாட்களில் நான், சிறந்த வீரர் விருது எல்லாம் பெற்றிருக்கிறேன்.

என் மூத்த மகனான விஷ்ணுராம், தனது உடற்குறைபாடு காரணமாக முடங்கிப் போய்விடக் கூடாது என்பது என் எண்ணம். எனவே அவருக்கு கூடைப்பந்து விளையாட்டில் பயிற்சி அளிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன். அவரும் கடுமையாக உழைத்து இந்த விளையாட்டில் தன்னை உயர்த்திக் கொண்டார்.

விஷ்ணுராம் ஏழாம் வகுப்பு படிக்கும்போது அவரை தினமும் காலையில் எங்கள் ஊரான பட்டிவீரன்பட்டியில் இருந்து வத்தலக்குண்டு வரை 8 கி.மீ. தூரம் ஓட்டப்பயிற்சியில் ஈடுபடுத்துவேன். கூடைப்பந்து பயிற்சியுடன், நான் விளையாடச் செல்லும் இடங்களுக்கு எல்லாம் அவரையும் அழைத்துச் சென்று பார்க்க வைப்பேன்.

முதல் போட்டி

விஷ்ணுராம் எட்டாம் வகுப்பு படிக்கையில் பள்ளிகளுக்கு இடையிலான வட்டார அளவிலான கூடைப்பந்து போட்டியில் முதன்முதலாகப் பங்கேற்றார். அதில் தனது அணி பெற்ற 41 புள்ளிகளில் 37 புள்ளிகளை தானே பெற்றுக் கொடுத்தார்.

விரைவிலேயே வழக்கமான தமிழக 14 வயதுக்கு உட்பட்டோர் அணிக்குத் தேர்வாகி, சத்தீஸ்கார் மாநிலத்தில் நடைபெற்ற தேசிய கூடைப்பந்தாட்டப் போட்டியில் பங்கேற்றார். அதன் இறுதி ஆட்டத்தில் தமிழக அணி தோல்வியுற்றாலும், விஷ்ணுராமுக்கு சிறந்த வீரர் விருது கிடைத்தது. தொடர்ந்து வழக்கமான தமிழக கூடைப்பந்து அணியில் நான்கு ஆண்டுகள் ஆடினார்.

கேப்டன் ஆனபோதும்...

கடந்த 2016-ம் ஆண்டு இந்திய காது கேளாதோர் கூடைப்பந்து அணிக்கான தேர்வு புதுச்சேரியில் நடைபெற்றது. அப்போது, அணியின் கேப்டனாக விஷ்ணுராம் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டார். ஆனால், ஜப்பான் செல்லவிருந்த இந்திய அணியின் பயணம் திடீரென ரத்து செய்யப்பட்டுவிட்டது.

ஆனால் இதுபோன்ற பின்னடைவுகள் விஷ்ணுராமை சோர்வடையச் செய்ததில்லை. சென்னை நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கில் நடைபெற்ற காது கேளாதோருக்கான அகில இந்திய கூடைப்பந்து போட்டியில் புதுச்சேரி அணி சார்பில் ஆடிய விஷ்ணுராம், அந்த அணியை வெல்ல வைத்தார்.

கடந்த 2017-ம் ஆண்டு ஜார்கண்ட் மாநிலம் ராஞ்சியில் நடைபெற்ற அகில இந்தியப் போட்டியில் புதுச்சேரி அணி வீரராக விஷ்ணுராமும், அந்த அணி மேலாளராக நானும் பங்கேற்றோம்.

அத்தொடரின் இறுதிப்போட்டியில் புதுச்சேரியும் கர்நாடகமும் மோதின. அதில் 63- 31 என்ற புள்ளிக் கணக்கில் புதுச்சேரி வென்றது. அதில் விஷ்ணுராமின் பங்கு மட்டும் 43 புள்ளிகள்.

சமீப வெற்றி

காது கேளாதோருக்கான தேசிய சீனியர் விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகள் கடந்த மாதம் சென்னை நேரு விளையாட்டரங்கில் நடைபெற்றது. அதில் பங்கேற்ற தமிழக காது கேளாதோர் கூடைப்பந்து அணிக்கு அடையாறில் உள்ள புனித லூயிஸ் காது கேளாதோர் சிறப்புக் கல்லூரியில் நான் பயிற்சி அளித்தேன்.

அதில், விஷ்ணுராம் உள்ளிட்ட தமிழக அணியினர் ஆர்வத்துடன் பயிற்சி பெற்று, தங்களை சிறப்பாகத் தயார்படுத்திக் கொண்டனர். அதை சென்னை போட்டியில் வெளிப்படுத்தினர்.

இந்த தேசியப் போட்டியில் தமிழகத்துடன், கேரளா, ஆந்திரா, கர்நாடகா, ஒடிசா, ராஜஸ்தான், அரியானா ஆகிய அணிகள் விளையாடின. ஆரம்பம் முதலே நன்றாக விளையாடிவந்த தமிழக அணி, இறுதி ஆட்டத்தில் கர்நாடகத்தை எதிர்கொண்டது.

அந்த அணியை 57- 22 என்ற புள்ளிக் கணக்கில் தமிழகம் வென்று வாகை சூடியது. தமிழக அணி பெற்ற புள்ளிகளில், 43 புள்ளிகளை விஷ்ணுராமே திரட்டிக் கொடுத்தார்.

இந்திய அணிக்குத் தேர்வு

வருகிற மே மாதம் இத்தாலியில் நடைபெறும் கூடைப்பந்தாட்டப் போட்டியில் ஆடும் இந்திய அணிக்கு விஷ்ணுராம் தேர்வாகி உள்ளார். அவருக்குத் தேவையான பொருளாதார உதவியை நமது அரசும் இந்திய விளையாட்டு மேம்பாட்டு ஆணையமும் வழங்க வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

கடந்த ஆண்டு பள்ளிப் படிப்பை முடித்த விஷ்ணுராம், ஒரு தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் கணினிப் படிப்பு படித்தபடி கூடைப்பந்து விளையாட்டைத் தொடர்கிறார். இவரது பயணத்தில் தந்தையுடன், பயிற்சியாளர் கலைச்செல்வனும் உறுதுணையாக உள்ளார்.

அண்ணனைப் பின்பற்றும் தம்பி

விஷ்ணுராம் வழியில் அவரது தம்பி தனுஷ்ராமும் கூடைப்பந்து விளையாட்டில் வளர்ந்து வருகிறார். நெய்வேலி பழுப்புநிலக்கரி கழகப் பள்ளியில் 8-ம் வகுப்பு படித்து வரும் அவர், கடந்த மாதம் சத்தீஸ்காரில் நடைபெற்ற தேசிய கூடைப்பந்தாட்டப் போட்டியில் பங்கேற்றார்.

விஷ்ணுராமின் தாய் மூளை முடக்குவாதத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர். ஆனாலும் தமது மகன்களுக்கு தன்னாலான ஆதரவை அளித்து வருகிறார்.

சிரமங்களைத் தாண்டி சிகரங்களைத் தொட முயலும் விஷ்ணுராமும் தனுஷ்ராமும் ‘கூடை கூடையாய்’ வெற்றிகளை குவிக்கட்டும்.

Leveraging artificial intelligence for accessibility solutions focus of Microsoft India's Accessibility Summit

The two-day Accessibility Summit — Empowering for Inclusion, hosted by Microsoft India in partnership with the National Association of the Deaf and National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People (NCPEPD) saw multiple stakeholders come together on one platform to talk about inclusive technologies, accessibility standards, highlight assistive technology solutions as well as discuss how policy can help make accessible India a reality.

From people with disabilities to assistive technology developers, service providers, business leaders and policy makers, the summit was an opportunity for voices from across the disability spectrum to be heard.

Shakuntala D Gamlin, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, said a strong public-private partnership could go a long way in empowering disabled people with equal access and opportunity.

The conference saw an interesting mix of master classes as well as access to Microsoft’s AI for Accessibility resources for the developer community with a showcase of inclusive technology. There were master classes on subjects like digital accessibility as well as ways to power inclusion with accessibility under CSR.

Speaking at the CSR masterclass, disability rights activist and social entrepreneur Ankit Rajiv Jindalsaid, “There is a need to build a pipeline of people in CSR who can focus on accessibility and create an accessible ecosystem”.

This is vital to provide empowering the disabled community, emphasized Arman Ali, Executive Director, NCPEDP. “Without access, you cannot provide education and employment. There is a big need to create awareness on accessibility and remove all barriers".

The showcase featured technology-based projects from NGOs, as well as assistive technologies developed by top technology companies, Microsoft partners as well as Microsoft solutions.

In 2018, Microsoft launched its five-year $25 million AI for Accessibility program that aims to utilize the power of AI to strengthen human capability for the over one billion people with disabilities across the world. Cloud and AI-based solutions like real time speech-to-text transcription, computer vision capabilities and predictive text functionality are empowering disabled people with the means to support independence and productivity.

There was also much reflection on the role companies can play in creating an eco-system to encourage accessibility. Dr Meenu Bhambhani, Vice President & Head - Corporate Social Responsibility at Mphasis used the example of her organization’s partnership with Uber in the launch of uberASSIST, which provide additional assistance to seniors and people with disabilities. “Technology does not always need to be developed by us, it is always better to partner with existing players”, said Bhambhani at a session.

By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, the second edition of the Microsoft India summit helped bring forth inspiring stories, innovative products and insightful discussions.

United Nations, Feb 13 More than one billion people risk irreversible hearing loss from exposure to loud sounds such as music played on their smartphone, UN health experts have warned, unveiling new guidelines to help address the problem.

The recommendations to prevent noise-induced hearing loss and related conditions such as tinnitus – commonly experienced as a ringing sound inside the ear - include better functions on personal audio devices that monitor how loud, and for how long, people listen to music.

"Over a billion young people are at risk of hearing loss simply by doing what they really enjoy doing a lot, which is listening regularly to music through their headphones over their devices," said Technical Officer Shelly Chadha, who works on preventing deafness and hearing loss at the WHO.

The one billion people at the risk of irreversible hearing loss are aged between 12 to 35 years.

"At the moment, we don't really have anything solid other than our instinct to tell us: are we doing this right, or is this something that is going to lead to tinnitus and hearing loss a few years down the line?," she said.

Today, hearing loss which is not addressed is estimated to cost the global economy USD 750 million, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

"Think of it like driving on a highway but without a speedometer in your car or a speed limit," Chadha said.

"And what we have proposed is that your smartphone comes fitted with a speedometer, with a measurement system that tells you how much sound you're getting and tells you if you're going over the limit," she said.

A parental volume control option is also included in the UN recommendations to industry, which participated in two years of discussions, along with experts from government, consumer bodies and civil society.

The guidelines also propose using technology to generate individualised listener profiles by monitoring how much people use their audio devices, then letting them know how safely – or not – they have been listening.

"What we propose are certain features like automatic limiting of, or automatic volume reduction and parental control of the volume," Chadha said.

"So that when somebody goes over their sound limit they have the option that the device will automatically reduce the volume to a level which is not going to harm their ears," she said.

According to the WHO, more than one in 20 people – 432 million adults and 34 million children – has disabling hearing loss, which impacts on their quality of life.

Most sufferers live in poor and middle-income countries, the UN agency notes, adding that by 2050, more than 900 million people will have significantly impaired hearing.

Around half of all cases of hearing loss could be prevented through public health measures, the WHO insists, its recommendations coming ahead of World Hearing Day on March 3.

"Given that we have the technological know-how to prevent hearing loss, it should not be the case that so many young people continue to damage their hearing while listening to music," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

"They must understand that once they lose their hearing, it won't come back," Ghebreyesus said.

The joint WHO and International Telecommunications Union (ITU) initiative, is an attempt to tackle the lack of awareness about what constitutes too much noise, amid data showing that around 50 per cent of young people listen to unsafe levels of sound through personal audio devices including smartphones, whose use continues to grow globally. New York: Hearing impairment is associated with accelerated cognitive decline with age, though the impact of mild hearing loss may be lessened by higher education, researchers say. The findings suggest that those with more serious hearing impairment had worse performance at the initial visit on a pair of commonly used cognitive assessment tests.

However, the association of mild hearing impairment with rate of cognitive decline was modified by education, said the researchers at University of California, San Diego.

"We surmise that higher education may provide sufficient cognitive reserve to counter the effects of mild hearing loss, but not enough to overcome effects of more severe hearing impairment," said senior author Linda K. McEvoy, Professor at the varsity.

For the study, published in the Journal of Gerontology: Series A Medical Sciences, the research team tracked 1,164 participants with a mean age 73.5 years of whom 64 per cent were women. All had undergone assessments for hearing accuracy and cognitive function between 1992 and 1996 and had up to five subsequent cognitive assessments at approximately four-year intervals. None used a hearing aid.

They found that almost half of the participants had mild hearing impairment, with 16.8 per cent suffering moderate-to-severe hearing loss. The team said that mild hearing impairment was associated with steeper decline among study participants without a college education, but not among those with higher education.

Multiple wearable devices with artificial intelligence AI, ML and NLP embedded in it are available in the market, making the lives of people with hearing disability easier.

In this article, we look at some of the top use cases of AI technology helping hearing impaired:

Language translation and captioning: Tech giants are already working in the field as part of its larger corporate social responsibility programme. Microsoft, as part of its inclusive mission, has developed headsets with its embedded AI-powered communication technology, Microsoft Translator for hearing impaired. The system uses automatic speech recognition to convert raw spoken language – ums, stutters and all – into fluent, punctuated text. Furthermore, the service is available in more than 60 languages. To promote inclusiveness, it has also partnered with educational institutes to improve access to spoken language and sign language of deaf students. Microsoft is also believed to have committed $25 million to its AI for Accessibility programme

Voice assistant for the deaf: Popular voice assistants like Amazon Echo and Apple Siri has been used by researchers to further development in the field by tweaking the systems slightly.

To provide more nuanced hearing experience, auditory assistants powered by AI and NLP have been developed by several companies. One of the leading hearing implant providers, Cochlear, has patented their exclusive AI-based assistant, FOX in 2017. The device uses speech perception and other patient outcome tests as an input to its fitting optimization algorithm, in order to maximise outcomes for patients.

In addition, outcome test for the device is conducted by using the Auditory Speech Sounds Evaluation (ASSE) test suite which is directly linked from the clinician’s computer to the Cochlear speech processors using a proprietary link.

Closed Captioning Personalization: Several companies have used the capabilities of AI to facilitate this feature which will translate audio into text instantaneously. Recently Netherland-based startup introduced GnoSys, an app which can translate sign language into text and speech. Known as the Google Translator for deaf and mute, the app leverages NLP and computer vision capabilities to detect videos of sign language and then translates into speech or text using smart algorithms. According to the company the app can be used in B2B setups which aims to employ deaf and mute employees.

Enhanced language prediction: The application of AI in processing brain imaging to better understand health conditions has become a new trend in the medical technology field. Researchers and medical practitioners are diversifying the applicability of AI in this field lately.

One such development has been the usage of AI to better understand the language prediction capabilities in deaf children. The researcher from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Ann & Robert H Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago applied ML and AI to predict how deaf children can master languages after receiving cochlear implant surgery. The researchers used MRI scans to capture abnormal patterns before cochlear implant surgery and developed an ML algorithm for predicting language development.

Improve lip reading: One of the challenges that people with disability face is the lack of readily available disable friendly content over the net. By developing lip reading algorithms, Google’s DeepMind had developed an AI system that can generate a closed caption for its deaf users. To train the system, DeepMind’s algorithms watched more than 5000 hours of television and identified as many as 17,500 unique words. As a result of this intensive training, the system could outdo professional lip-readers by translating 46.8 per cent of words without errors. The researchers at Google believe that technology has great potential to improve hearing aids, silent dictation in public spaces and speech recognition in a noisy environment.

Such technology can vastly help the deaf community for easier interpretation of readily available visuals content and improve the accessibility of content for the community.

Inspired by PM Modi's 'Start Up India', Raipur man opens cafe providing employment to deaf and dumb youths

In the busy streets of Raipur, there is a cafe serving steaming cups of tea but in a very special way.

'Tapri' is a cafe which is promoting sign language by employing hearing- and speech-impaired individuals.

Founded by Irrfan, almost four years back, Tapri intends to serve the society at large. The cafe aims to not provide a unique cafe experience, but to also sensitize fully-abled people to the challenges of being a hearing or speech impaired person.

Inspired by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's Startup India, Irrfan after completing B.Com from from Raipur, Irrfan invested all his savings to start this special cafe.

Apart from being a normal cafe, the place also organise book reading session, poetry sessions and much more. The owner himself learned the sign language from YouTube and helped the workers to interact with the customers.

'Tapri' is becoming one of the popular cafes among youth in Raipur.

கேரள மாநிலம் கண்ணுரைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ராஜேஷ். இவரின் 2 வயது மகள் நித்யா. இந்தக் குழந்தைக்கு பிறவியில் இருந்தே காது கேட்காது. ராஜேஷ், தினக் கூலி. பெற்றோருக்கு, தங்கள் குழந்தையின் மழலைப் பேச்சை கேட்க ஆசையில்லாமல் இருக்குமா. குழந்தை நித்யாவுக்கு பேச்சு வரவழைக்கும் முயற்சியில் பெற்றோர் ஈடுபட்டுவருகின்றனர். கடனை வாங்கி குழந்தைக்கு ரூ.4 லட்சம் மதிப்புள்ள காது கேட்புக் கருவியை கஷ்டப்பட்டு வாங்கினர். அதுவும், கடந்த 4 மாதங்களுக்கு முன்தான் வாங்கியுள்ளனர். கருவியை மாட்டிய பிறகு குழந்தை நித்யாவுக்கு ஓரளவுக்கு பேச்சு கேட்கத் தொடங்கியது. குழந்தை தட்டித் தடுமாறி பேசவும் செய்தது. இதனால், பெற்றோர்கள் மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தனர்.

இந்நிலையில், மேல் சிகிச்சைக்காக கண்ணூரில் இருந்து கோழிக்கோட்டுக்கு சென்னை ரயிலில் தாயாருடன் நித்யா சென்றபோது, திருடர்கள் குழந்தையின் காது கேட்புக் கருவியை திருடிச் சென்றுவிட்டனர். மகளுக்காக கஷ்டப்பட்டு வாங்கிய கருவியும் திருடு போனதால், பெற்றோர் நொந்துபோனார்கள். தங்கள் மகளுக்கு மீண்டும் காது கேட்காமல் போனதைக் கண்டு கடும் வேதனை அடைந்துள்ளனர். 

ரயில்வே போலீஸிடம் புகார் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தக் கருவியை மதிப்புமிக்க பொருள் எனக் கருதி திருடர்கள் திருடிச் சென்றிருக்கலாம். இந்தப் பொருளால் தங்களுக்கு எந்தப் பயனும் இல்லை என்று தெரிந்த பிறகு அதை வீசி விடவோ அல்லது விற்று விடவோ முயல்வார்கள் என்று போலீஸார் கருதுகின்றனர். ஒரு வேளை இந்தக் கருவியை கண்டெடுத்தால், 9847746711 என்ற எண்ணைத் தொடர்புகொள்ளுமாறு போலீஸார் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

Railway Divyang Employee’s March for Promotion: New Delhi

New Delhi : Railway Divyang Employee’s March for Promotion “Disabled Employees Association of Railway(Regd.)” will be observing “Swadhikar Rally” on 11th February 2019 in which all Divyang employees of Railways shall be protesting to press their demands of promotions to all “Divyang” which is pending for years after passing the judgement by CAT, Hon’ble High Court and Hon’ble Supreme Court. On this occassion a protest rally in which around 300 divyang employees of Railways are likey to particiapte. This rally is also proposed to be started from HQ of Norther Railway i.e. Baroda House to office of Railway Board at Rail Bhawan. “Disabled Employee Association of Railway Regd.” will has been formed for the welfare of the Disabled employees & disabled dependents of railway employees comprising of the Indian Railway. This is worth mentionable that the association is exclusively meant to solve the real problems as well as grievance being faced by disabled employees & disabled dependents of Railway Employees. As this association has raised various issue in form of demands with the competent authority of Railway Board from many years but the same has not yet been accepted and are still pending before Railway Board.To show our solidarity and to create awareness & sensitization amongst the Railway administration for the purpose of acceptance of our demand, the Association have now decided to organize a “SVADHIKAR RALLY’ which will march from Baroda House the headquarter of Northern Railway to Railway Board, the Rail Bhawan and “Dharna Protest” will be proposed in front of the Railway Board office on dated 11th February 2019”. In this Rally & Dharna, approximately 300 disabled employees will be participating, who have various types of disability e.g. orthopedically/visually/hearing impaired people some of them are even using wheelchair, on their designed scooter/car etc.

Pune to host workshop for empowerment of deaf people

The Pahal Foundation, a Pune-based NGO, that is working to empower the deaf community, is organizing the first-ever state level workshop on sustainable development and accessible empowerment of deaf people. The workshop will bring together people from the deaf community in India and abroad.

The venue is Pimpri-Chinchwad and the date 24 February and there are plans to make this an annual event.

Deaf leaders and community members will come together on this platform to work on issues that are crucial for the long term development of people who are deaf, like

Education

One of the main concern that will be addressed is the need for quality education for children of the deaf community. Existing facilities are not inclusive and fail to make any major impact on the lives of deaf people.

Schools and higher education institutes are not equipped to handle the educational needs of the deaf students and this only hampers their growth and future prospects. Pradeep More, Co- Founder, Pahal Foundation said, "We need an effective education module that will ensure that good quality education is provided to students who are deaf. Through this workshop we aim to raise a united voice for all the deaf students who are missing out on good education due to the inefficiency of the education system.”

Awareness
Another aspect that will be looked into at the meet up is to spread awareness among people who are deaf about their rights. Many people miss out on vital opportunities as they are not aware of the various rights and welfare schemes that are available for them.

Dynamic deaf presenters such as, Sibaji Panda, Rajesh Ketkar, K. Murali, Manoj Patwari, Hulusi Bati, Virendra Singh, Aniket Selgaonkar will enlighten the participants on various topics. Senior consultant for deaf education, Surinder Randhawa is also one of the presenters.

I feel that people in cities and bigger towns are becoming aware about Indian Sign language however, the same is missing in smaller towns, villages and remote areas. Initiatives taken by organisations such as Pahal Foundation can bring about that change. I hope the workshop will become an effective platform for motivation and empowerment of the people of the deaf community.” - Arvind Karbhari , Indian Sign Language Teacher

The workshop is completely accessible and welcomes people who are deaf and also their families to ensure that everyone can come together at a common platform for rights of the deaf people.

Balavidyalaya through the years

As Balavidyalaya School for Young Deaf Children celebrates its 50th year in the city, Reshma Iqbal, a proud alumna takes a trip down memory lane

Around the age of 18 months, an ototoxic antibiotic prescribed by a doctor in Pune during a routine fever, robbed me off the ability to hear. Without hearing, I was not expected to learn to talk, like normal children do. Two decades later, I am a journalist who interviews people on a daily basis.

When I was diagnosed with a hearing loss of 85 to 90%, my parents’ world turned upside down. However, they were shown a glimmer of hope when they heard about Balavidyalaya School for Young Deaf Children, a special school in Chennai that focused on teaching hearing impaired children to 'hear' and 'talk'. On learning more about the school, they discovered that Balavidyalaya (earlier known as Little Woodford) was headed by two far-sighted individuals, Menaka Parthasarathy and Saraswathi Narayanaswamy, back in late sixties when sign language was the norm. But these two ladies had a vision that a deaf child, with intensive speech therapy, hard work and to patience, could actually be taught how to 'hear' and 'talk' and one day.

Balavidyalaya, which imparts free education, considers parents as equal partners in the programme and lays profound emphasis on the parents’ training abilities at home as well. The teachers simultaneously train at least one parent along with the child, and expect the child's progress to follow charted territory. A parent was quoted as saying that she had not cared for the anger of her bosses (at her job) but has cried in front of the teachers.

After a few years in the school, the ward is ‘mainstreamed’ ( is made to join a 'normal' school with other children). The successful results of the intensive training and speech therapy were soon spread by word of mouth, leading to even students coming from outside Tamil Nadu to attend the school.

Those parents who were not based out of Chennai gave up lucrative jobs to relocate to the city having to find alternate jobs and accommodation afresh. Many non-English speaking parents had to learn English to teach their child at home, as the school followed an English medium curriculum.

A gentleman in the hearing aid industry, who has been associated with Balavidyalaya since its inception, tells me, “Had it not been for the military-like rules that teachers had insisted on for parents, the students would not be shining in the world today.”
Cut the noise
When hearing-impaired children start using hearing aids for the first time, all they hear is noise. The teachers then, teach them how to associate each action with the resultant noise. When they learn this association, what was earlier perceived to be just noise, is interpreted as a meaningful sound or word. This is part of DHVANI (Development of Hearing, Voice and Natural Integration), an intensive language programme, which Bala Vidyalaya has developed.

In this form of education, individual attention is given to children which allow them to reach their full potential intellectually, socially and emotionally, at their own pace. Regular observation along with continuous assessment using the DHVANI assessment cards and keys, provide a detailed picture of each student’s progress. DHVANI trainers are also awarded a Diploma for Teaching Young Hearing Impaired (DTYHI) recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi, and the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The students are taught to listen, talk, read and write, through activity-based learning. No formal text books are followed. And, the learning does not cease after school hours . Parents are expected to continue with the lessons. It is also essential that someone accompanies the child all the time so that he/she does not lose the practice of listening to, and talking. ‘Mainstreaming’ the child after a few years ensures that the child has the chance to improve his or her speech clarity by interacting with other children. During the early years, lip reading is also vital in understanding speech.

Today, Balavidyalaya, the non-residential, private and non-profit early intervention centre for infants and children with hearing impairment till five years, runs sister schools all over India and has a teachers’ training institute as well. The school houses a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre and provides students with the required hearing aids. The alumni include PhD candidates, software engineers, bank employees and sportspersons.

Twenty-three years after my hearing impairment diagnosis, I landed my first job after completing my Master's degree. And, by becoming a journalist with a leading newspaper, I met people from all walks of life. Ironic, indeed.

Balavidyalaya will celebrate its 50th anniversary in December 2019. For the year-long celebration, the school will organise a series of monthly events to increase awareness.

லைவ் டிரான்ஸ்கிரைப் என்னும் செயலியை பொருத்தவரை காதுகேளாதவர்களுக்கு செய்திகளை டிரான்ஸ்கிரிப்ஷன் முறையில் அளிக்கும். அதேசமயத்தில் சவுண்டு ஆம்பிலிஃவையர் என்னும் செயலி மூலம் சிறிதளவு காதுகேளாத நபர்களுக்கு சப்தத்தை அதிகரிக்கவும் கேட்கும் சப்தத்தை தெளிவுபடுத்த உதவுகிறது.

மாற்றுத்திறனாளி குழந்தைகள் தங்கள் வாழ்வில் எதிர்கொள்ளும் அன்றாட நிகழ்வுகளைத் தத்ரூபமாக `பேரன்பு' படத்தில் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருப்பார் இயக்குநர் ராம்.

வாழ்க்கையில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் மனிதர்களுள் சிலர், நாம் எதிர்பார்க்காத நேரத்தில் நமக்கு பேரன்பைக் கொடுத்து நம்முடைய வாழ்வின் அடுத்தகட்ட நகர்தலுக்கான நம்பிக்கையைக் கொடுப்பார்கள். அப்படிப்பட்டவர்கள் உண்மையில் பேரன்பானவர்கள்! நிஜத்தில் `பேரன்பினால்' அழகான வாழ்க்கையை வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் நிவேதாவின் வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றித்தான் இங்கே பேசுகிறார் அவர் அம்மா வனிதா.

சேலம்: சேலம் அருகே அரசுப்பள்ளியில் பயிலும் மாற்றுத்திறன் மாணவர்கள் ஓவியம், நடனம், விளையாட்டு என்று பல்வேறு துறைகளில் சாதனை படைப்பது கவனம் ஈர்த்துள்ளது. உடல் குறைபாடு என்பது மனிதனின் வெற்றி பயணத்திற்கு ஒரு தடையல்ல. அதுவும் எங்களுக்கான அடையாளம் தான். கிராமங்களில் ஏராளமான மாற்றுத்திறன் சாதனையாளர்கள் உள்ளனர். அவர்களை மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் என்று கூறுவதை விட, தங்கள் மீதான பிறரின் சிந்தனையை மாற்றும் திறனாளிகள் என்றே கூறவேண்டும். அந்த வகையில் ஓவியம், நடனம், விளையாட்டு என்று எங்களால் முடிந்த சாதனைகளை படைத்து வருகிறோம் என்று ெநகிழ்கின்றனர் ேசலம் அருேகயுள்ள வலசையூர் அரசுப்பள்ளி மாணவர்கள். அனைவருக்கும் இடைநிலை கல்வி திட்டத்தின் கீழ், மாற்றுத்திறன் மாணவர்களுக்கான ஒருங்கிணைந்த கல்வி திட்டம் செயல்படுத்தப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இத்திட்டத்தின் கீழ் சேலம் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள 21 ஒன்றியங்களில் 300 பள்ளிகள் செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றன. இவற்றில், 580க்கும் அதிகமான மாற்றுத்திறன் மாணவ, மாணவிகள் படித்து வருகின்றனர். இதில் சேலம் வலசையூரில் உள்ள அரசு பள்ளியில் படித்து வரும் மாணவர்கள், கலை, ஓவியம், விளையாட்டு என அசத்தி வருகின்றனர். கண் பார்வையற்ற 6 பேர், காதுகேளாதோர் 9 பேர், வாய் பேசமுடியாத, காது கேளாத மற்றும் கைகளை இழந்த ஒருவர், உள்பட 17 மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் இப்பள்ளியில் படித்து வருகின்றனர். இவர்களில், 2 பேர் எஸ்எஸ்எல்சி, 3 பேர் பிளஸ் 1 மற்றும் 8 பேர் பிளஸ் 2 பொதுத்தேர்வுகளை எழுதுகின்றனர். இப்பள்ளியில், 9ம் வகுப்பு படிக்கும் மாணவன் ராஜா என்பவர், இரு கைகளும் செயலிழந்த நிலையில், வாய் பேசமுடியாத, காது கேட்கமுடியாத துயரத்தை கொண்டுள்ளார். ஆனால், திறமைக்கு இதெல்லாம் ஒரு தடையல்ல என்பதை நிரூபிக்கும் வகையில், தனது இரு கால்களால் ஓவியங்களை தீட்டி அசத்துகிறார். கடந்த ஒரு வருடத்திற்கு முன்பு தான் இப்பள்ளியில் சேர்ந்துள்ளார். விரைவில், மாநில அளவிலான ஓவியப்போட்டியில் பங்கேற்கவுள்ள இவரின் திறமையை பாராட்டி, மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் ரோகிணி பரிசும் வழங்கியுள்ளார். சக மாணவர்களுடன் ஓட்டத்திலும் முந்தும் இவர், பயிற்சியாளர்களே தடுமாறும் பத்மாசனத்தை அசால்ட்டாக செய்து முடிக்கிறார்.

மாற்றுத்திறன் மாணவர்கள் சாதிக்க, விளையாட்டு ஒன்றும் விதிவிலக்கல்ல என மார்தட்டுகிறார், இதே பள்ளியில் 12ம் வகுப்பு படிக்கு மாணவர் கவுதம். பார்வையற்றவரான இவர், சத்தமில்லாமல் ஜூடோ போட்டியில் சாதிக்கிறார். கடந்த மாதம் உத்திரபிரதேச மாநிலம் கோரக்பூரில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்காக நடந்த தேசிய அளவிலான போட்டியில் பங்கேற்ற இவர், வெண்கல பதக்கம் வென்று சாதனை படைத்தார். கலைத்துறையில் சாதிக்க விரும்பும் கேசவமூர்த்தி நடனத்தில், வியக்க வைக்கிறார். பிளஸ் 2 படித்து வரும் பார்வையற்ற மாற்றுத்திறனாளியான இவர், உலக மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் தினவிழாவில், நடனமாடி அனைவரது பாராட்டையும் பெற்றுள்ளார். இதேபோல், பிளஸ் 2 படிக்கும் காதுகேளாத, வாய்பேச முடியாத மாணவன் மகேந்திரன் கம்யூட்டரை கையாள்வதில், ஆசிரியரையே மிரள வைக்கிறார். 9ம் வகுப்பு படிக்கும் பிரேம்குமார் என்பவரும், ஓவியத்தில் தனித்திறனை கொண்டு சிறந்து விளங்குகிறார். இதுகுறித்து மாற்றுத்திறன் மாணவர்களுக்கான சிறப்பு ஆசிரியர் அமிர்தவள்ளி கூறுகையில், ‘‘கடந்த 10 வருடமாக இப்பள்ளியில் பணிபுரிந்து வருகிறேன். மாற்றுத்திறன் மாணவர்களுக்கு, பள்ளியில் படிக்கும் சக மாணவர்கள் மற்றும் ஆசிரியர்கள் பலவழிகளை காட்டும் தூண்டுகோலாக இருந்து வருகின்றனர். மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளை தனிமைப்படுத்த கூடாது என்ற எண்ணத்தை கொண்டுள்ள அவர்கள், ஒன்றாக விளையாட்டு, உணவு பரிமாற்றம் என ஊக்கப்படுத்தும் விதமாக செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றனர். இப் பள்ளியை விட்டு வெளியே சென்ற பலர் எம்.காம்., பி.காம்., மற்றும் பாலிநுட்பம் கல்லூரிகளில் படித்து, நிரந்தர பணியில் உள்ளனர். மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளின் முயற்சிகளுக்கு துணையாக நின்றால், நாளைய சாதனையாளர்களாக மிளிர்கின்றனர். இந்த எண்ணம் அனைவருக்கும் இயல்பாக ஏற்பட வேண்டும்,’’ என்றார்.

கூடுதல் உபகரணங்கள் தேவை
மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்காக செயல்பட்டு வரும் பல பள்ளிகளில், தனியாக ஆய்வக வசதிகள் இல்லை. பாதுகாப்பற்ற கட்டிடங்களில் இப்பிரிவு செயல்பட்டு வருவதால், கற்றல் உபகரணங்களுக்கு உத்திரவாதம் இல்லாத நிலை காணப்படுகிறது. இதேபோல், பார்வையற்ற மாணவர்களுக்கு நிறைய கற்றல் உபகரணங்கள் உள்ளன. ஆனால், காதுகேளாதவர்களுக்காக உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ள ஒருசில கருவிகள், அந்த மாணவர்களுக்கு போதுமானதாக இல்லை. எனவே, கூடுதலாக உபகரணங்களை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்பதும் மாணவர்களின் எதிர்பார்ப்பு.

காதுகேளாதோருக்கான அகில இந்திய தடகள போட்டி (14, 16, 18 வயதுக்கு உட்பட்டோர் மற்றும் 18 வயதுக்கு மேற்பட்டோர்) சென்னை நேரு ஸ்டேடியத்தில் நடந்து வருகிறது. இதில் நேற்று நடந்த 14 வயதுக்குட்பட்ட பெண்களுக்கான நீளம் தாண்டுதலில் தமிழக வீராங்கனை குரு ஜோதி 3.92 மீட்டர் தூரம் தாண்டி புதிய போட்டி சாதனையுடன் தங்கப்பதக்கம் வென்றார்.
