Panaji: Abdul Shahid, a 10-year-old dead-mute boy, was reunited with his parents a few hours after he went missing from his home at Porvorim on Friday morning.
His father, Anwar Jahagirdar, who left home early morning to deliver milk, said that Shahid too left home soon after him, at about 6am.
"My family thought he had gone with me and continued about their regular chores. It was only when I returned at 8am to drop him to school that we realised that Shahid was missing," said Jahagirdar.
They family searched for him till 11am, and thereafter lodged a complaint with the Porvorim police station.
Meanwhile, as it turns out, the boy had boarded a Panaji-bound bus at Porvorim. When the bus reached the Panaji bus stand, Shahid remained seated. The alert bus conductor, finding the boy alone, informed the Panaji police.
Panaji PI Sidhant Shirodkar said that on receiving the tip-off, his team, along with the NGO Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN-Goa) started making inquiries.
SCAN, director, Audery Pinto, said that the boy's handicap made it difficult for them to identify where he studied, especially since he was neither wearing a uniform nor carrying an identity card. "We approached the Sanjay Centre For Special Education, Porvorim, with the hope of getting an interpreter," Pinto said.
"A local beat officer of Porvorim police station had shared the available information with other police stations and the principal of Sanjay School, Tatu Kudalkar, helped us interpret what the boy was trying to explain," Pinto said explaining how they were able to obtained Shahid's address. Panaji police then traced his parents and reunited Shahid with them by afternoon.
