With an existence of over 16 years, the journey of DEEDS started 16 years ago with the setting up of a special school for the Deaf in Dehradun – Bajaj Institute of Learning (BIL), which offers free education from pre-primary to 12th standard to over 140 deaf students, free of cost. These children are from economically underprivileged backgrounds and hail from distances as far as 50 kms radius, from Haridwar, Mussoorie, etc. BIL is also offering the facilities of hostel for the students of Dehradun.
BIL is one of the few schools in India to offer higher education to the Deaf. It is now a recognized resource centre for testing, certification, education and vocational training for Uttarakhand. The vision of the project is to develop BIL on the lines of Gallaudet University for the Deaf, USA. Latest techniques in teaching and visual aids are used by the faculty to impart education to the Deaf.
DEEDS is a charitable trust which serves the community of the ones with hearing disability by providing free education, vocational training leading to suitable job placements. The vision of DEEDS being to give a better life to the individuals with hearing impaired by making them financially self-reliant and contributors in mainstream society.
In Mumbai, the trust has nine projects which give training to deaf youth for various occupations like cooking, tailoring, computer literacy, beauty art, English literacy and several others.
All the projects are conducted free of cost and the students undergoing training are given stipend till the completion of the course and the teaching faculty in most of the programs are deaf individuals. DEEDS has 13500 beneficiaries who are living a better life now and over 1300 deaf youth have been given jobs.
