ஊட்டி;நீலகிரியில், பிளஸ்-2 பொது தேர்வில், 92.2 சதவீதம் பேர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர்.நீலகிரியில், பிளஸ்-2 பொது தேர்வு கடந்த மார்ச் மாதம் நடந்தது. 3,103 மாணவர்கள், 3,749 மாணவிகள் என, 6852 பேர் தேர்வு எழுதினர். தேர்வு முடிவு நேற்று வெளியிடப்பட்டது. இதில், 92.02 சதவீதம் பேர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். இதில், அரசு, தனியார் மற்றும் அரசு உதவி பெறும் பள்ளிகள் என, 19 பள்ளிகள் நுாறு சதவீதம் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். அதே போல், ஊனமுற்றோர், காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளி 100 சதவீதம் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். தேர்வு முடிவுகளை மாணவர்கள் எஸ்.எம்.எஸ்., மூலம் தெரிந்து கொண்டனர்.

ஈரோடு: பிளஸ் 2 தேர்வு முடிவுகளில், மாநில அளவில் தேர்வெழுதிய ஏழு கண் பார்வையற்றோரும் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். காது கேளாத, வாய் பேச முடியாத ஐந்து பேரில், நான்கு பேர் தேர்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். உடல் உறுப்பு பாதிக்கப்பட்ட, 22 பேரில், 21 பேர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். பிற பிரிவுகளை சேர்ந்த ஏழு மாற்று திறனாளிகளில், ஆறு பேர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றனர். ஈரோடு மாவட்டம், 96.99 சதவீத தேர்ச்சி பெற்று மாநிலத்தில் இரண்டாமிடம் பிடித்தது. இதேபோல் கடந்தாண்டு, 95.23 சதவீதம், 2018ல், 96.30 சதவீதம் தேர்ச்சி பெற்று, மாநிலத்தில் இரண்டாமிடம் பிடித்தது. மூன்றாமாண்டாக இரண்டாமிடம் பிடித்து, 'ஹாட்ரிக்' சாதனை படைத்துள்ளது.

குமரி மாவட்டத்தில் காது கேளாத மற்றும் வாய் பேச முடியாத 14 மாணவ-மாணவிகளும் 100 சதவீதம் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர்.

குமரி மாவட்டத்தில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளில் கண் பார்வையற்ற 11 மாணவ-மாணவிகளும், காது கேளாத மற்றும் வாய் பேச முடியாத 14 மாணவ-மாணவிகளும், கை, கால் ஊனமுற்ற மாணவ-மாணவிகள் 24 பேரும், பிற ஊனங்களை உடைய மாணவ-மாணவிகள் 36 பேரும் தேர்வு எழுதினர். அவர்களில் கண் பார்வையற்ற 10 பேரும் (90.91 சதவீதம்), காது கேளாத வாய் பேச முடியாத 14 பேரும் (100 சதவீதம்), கை, கால் ஊனமுற்ற 22 பேரும் (91.67 சதவீதம்), பிற ஊனங்களை உடைய 35 பேரும் (97.22 சதவீதம்) தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர்.

கோவை: கோவை மாவட்டத்தில் கண்பார்வையற்ற நிலையில் தேர்வு எழுதிய 23 பேரும் தேர்ச்சி பெற்று அசத்தியுள்ளனர்.

பிளஸ் 2 பொதுத்தேர்வு முடிவுகள் இன்று வெளியாகியுள்ளன. கோவையில் 96.9 சதவீதம் பேர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர். கோவை மாவட்டம் தமிழக அளவில் தேர்ச்சி சதவீதத்தில் மூன்றாவது இடத்தில் உள்ளது.

கோவையில் கண்பார்வையற்றோர் 23 பேர் இந்த பொதுத் தேர்வை எழுதினர். இவர்கள் அனைவரும் பொதுத் தேர்வில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்று சாதனை படைத்துள்ளனர்.

மேலும், காது கேளாதோர் மற்றும் வாய் பேச முடியாதோர் 35 பேர் தேர்வு எழுதினர். அதில் 29 பேர் தேர்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளனர். மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் 36 பேர் தேர்வு எழுதினர். அதில் 32 பேர் தேர்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளனர். பிற வகையில் ஊனம் அடைந்தோர் 30 பேர் தேர்வு எழுதினர். அதில் 29 பேர் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர்.

மன நலம் 45 சதவீதம் குன்றியோருக்கு, 75 சதவீதத்திற்கு மேல் கடுமையான கை, கால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள், 40 மற்றும் அதற்கு மேல் தசை திசைவு நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டோர், 40 சதவீதம் மற்றும் அதற்கு மேல் தொழு நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டோருக்கு பராமரிப்பு உதவித்தொகையாக மாதம்தோறும் தலா ரூ.1500 வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

* சமூக பாதுகாப்பு திட்டம் மூலம் நிதி வழங்கப்படுகிறதா.
- கண் பார்வை, செவித்திறன், கை, கால் பாதித்தோருக்கு மாதம் ரூ.1000 உதவி தொகை வழங்கப்படுகிறது. வேலை வாய்ப்பற்ற மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கு நிவாரண உதவி உண்டா.- அனைத்து வகை மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கு வேலை வாய்ப்பற்றோர் நிவாரண உதவி தொகை மாவட்ட வேலை வாய்ப்பு அலுவலகம் மூலம் பெற்றுத்தரப்படுகிறது.

* மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கு உதவி தொகை தடையில்லாமல் கிடைக்கிறதா.

- 2020 ல் ஜூன் வரை வழங்கப்பட்டு விட்டது.

* வேறு சில நலத்திட்ட உதவிகள் என்ன.

- 40 சதவீதம் பாதிப்புள்ளோருக்கு தேசிய அடையாள அட்டை வழங்குதல், கை, கால் பாதித்த, காது கேளாதோர், பார்வையற்றோருக்கு நல்ல நிலையில் உள்ளவர்களை திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தல் மற்றும் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் பிற மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளிகளை திருமணம் செய்து கொண்டால் டிப்ளமோ, பட்டப்படிப்பு முடித்தவர்களுக்கு ரூ.50 ஆயிரம், மற்றவர்களுக்கு ரூ.25 ஆயிரம் மற்றும் 8 கிராம் தாலிக்கு தங்கம் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

* மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கு கல்வி உதவித்தொகை.

- 1 முதல்- 5 ம் வகுப்பு ரூ.1000, 6 - முதல் 8 ம் வகுப்பு ரூ.2000, 9 முதல் - பிளஸ் 2 ரூ.3000, இளநிலை படிப்பு ரூ.4000, முதுகலை படிப்பு ரூ.7000 என கல்வி உதவி தொகை வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

உயர் கல்வி பயில்வோருக்கு சலுகைகள் உண்டா.

- உயர் கல்வி நிலையங்களில் கல்வி கட்டணம் மற்றும் சிறப்பு கட்டணம் செலுத்துவதிலிருந்து விலக்கு அளித்தல்,சட்டப்படிப்பு பயின்ற மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கு வழக்கறிஞராக பதிவு செய்வதற்கு, சட்ட புத்தகம் வாங்க ரூ.3000 வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

அரசின் பிற சலுகைகள் என்ன.

- அனைத்து வகை மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கும் நான்கில் ஒரு பங்கு கட்டணத்தில் தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் இலவச பஸ் பயண சலுகை உண்டு. தனியாக பயணம் செய்ய இயலாத மாற்று திறனாளிகளுடன் உதவியாளர் நான்கில் ஒரு பங்கு கட்டணத்துடன் பயணம் செய்யவும் சலுகை உண்டு.

சுய தொழில் துவங்க உதவி செய்யப்படுமா.

- பிரதமர் சுய வேலை வாய்ப்பு திட்டத்தின் கீழ் 5 சதவீதம் தனிநபர் பங்கு தொகையை அரசு வழங்குகிறது. தேவிய ஊனமுற்றோர் நிதி மேம்பாடு நிறுவனத்தின் மூலம் சுய தொழில் துவங்க ரூ.25 ஆயிரம் முதல் ரூ.25 லட்சம் வரை குறைந்த வட்டியில் கடன் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

மன வளர்ச்சி குன்றியோருக்கான காப்பகம் உள்ளதா.

- மனநலம் பாதிக்கப்பட்டோருக்கான காப்பகத்தில் சேர்ப்பதற்கு சிவகாசி ஈஞ்சார் விலக்கில் அரசு நிதி உதவியுடன் ஜீவக்கல் மன நல காப்பகம் இருபாலருக்கும் இலவமாக நடத்தப்படுகிறது.

* மன நலம் குன்றிய பெண்களுக்கு காப்பகம் உண்டா.-

விருதுநகர் குல்லுார் சந்தையில் அரசின் நிதியுடன் 14 வயதுக்கு மேற்பட்ட மன வளர்ச்சி குன்றியோருக்கான பெண்கள் காப்பகம், பயிற்சி மையம் உள்ளது என்றார்.

Rohtak: A national-level sensitisation and basic Indian sign language online training programme for better accessibility of workplace commenced under the joint aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR); Human Resource Development Centre, Ghaziabad; Haryana Welfare Society for Persons with Speech and Hearing Impairment (HWSPSHI), Panchkula; and Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU). Director General, CSIR, Shekhar C Mande said tech-enabled solution to make workplace inclusive for hearing and speech impaired persons was the need of the hour. HWSPSHI chairperson Sharanjeet Kaur said people need to be sensitised about the condition of such persons. MDU Vice Chancellor Prof Rajbir Singh said universities and scientific organisations like CSIR must work together to find solutions for societal problems by conducting joint research programmes.

MS Dhoni's performance in the IPL 2020 would also have decided if he made it to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup that is supposed to be played in Australia later this year.

Born Without Hands, Hearing-Impaired Man Makes Stunning Paintings With His Feet

“Paintings are universal, there are no prerequisites to understand them. All it takes is your creative imagination,” Gaukaran Patil expresses through his feet via sign language.

A gifted painter from Chhattisgarh’s Bhilai district, Gaukaran was born without hands. He also has a speech and hearing impairment. But those are not disabilities for him.

In fact, he sees them as blessings in disguise, for he has a rare talent of painting with his feet. He can effortlessly hold a brush between his toes and create a stunning picture.

The 35-year-old was raised by a single mother along with two siblings in Bhilai. He also completed a Masters in Fine Arts.

Gaukaran’s school teacher was first to notice his talent and the wonders he could do with his feet.

“Though people around me found it strange that I was writing with my toes, my mother never gave up on me, and encouraged me to complete my education just like every other child. My teachers saw I was a natural when it came to drawing. The appreciation made me feel welcome. Besides, I truly enjoyed it,” he says.

After completing his education, Gaukaran started painting for a living, and so far, he has sold over 500 of them. All his paintings are sold via social media and through word of mouth.

Two years ago, he also joined the Kopal Vani Shravan Badhit Aavasiya Vidyalaya in Raipur to mentor hearing-impaired students in computers and painting.His zeal and sincerity towards his artistic abilities also garnered the attention of India’s former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, and Sonia Gandhi, who have purchased his paintings during their visits to the state.

Recently, a video featuring Gaukaran went viral. He was dipping his brush in the paint bottle with his toes and making a picture. It was uploaded on Twitter by IAS Priyanka Shukla.

“Gokaran Patil is a huge source of inspiration for those who give up after going through rough patches in life,” she wrote.

Indian deaf cricket team to participate in DICC World Cup 2021

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) The Indian team under Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA) is all set to participate in the DICC Cricket ODI World Cup 2021 at the invitation of Deaf-ICC (Deaf-International Cricket Council) South Africa.

"We are delighted to receive this invitation and witness great enthusiasm amongst our team players for the upcoming tournament," Sumit Jain, President -- Indian Deaf Cricket Association, was quoted as saying in the statement.

"The potential of our team has been proven time and again with their remarkable performances in the previously held tournaments.

"Furthermore, the invitation to play in the World Cup 2021 comes as a testimony of the recognition of our players'' hard work.

"Boosting their morale, this tournament will provide an amazing opportunity to prove their credentials in cricket and will encourage them profoundly," he added.

The invitation was received after DICC took cognizance of the team''s stellar performances in previous T20s and ODIs. Hosted by DICC, the ODI tournament will be played from October 19 to 29 next year in the UAE.

"We believe that organising national and international tournaments for disability sports is one of the best ways to encourage inclusivity and offers a great platform for the teams as well as individuals to test their mettle," Zahir-uddin Babar, CEO -- Deaf International Cricket Council, was quoted as saying in the statement.

"The players of the IDCA are humbled to receive an invitation for DICC Cricket ODI World Cup 2021, who have worked very hard and played exceptionally well in the previous games," he added.

இதுபற்றி போலீசிடம் வெங்கடேஸ்வரலுவின் குடும்பத்தினர் புகார் அளித்தனர். ஆனால் எவ்வளவு தேடியும், அவர் கிடைக்கவில்லை.

இங்கு குறிப்பிடப்பட வேண்டிய விஷயம் என்னவென்றால், வெங்கடேஸ்வரலுவுக்கு காது கேட்காது; பேசவும் முடியாது. இதனால் அவருக்கு என்ன ஆனதோ என்ற பதட்டத்தில் குடும்பத்தினர் இருந்தனர். நீண்ட நாட்கள் ஆனதால் அவர் உயிரிழந்திருக்க கூடும் என்று கருதி அவருக்கு இறுதிச் சடங்குகளையும் குடும்பத்தினர் செய்து முடித்தனர்.

இந்த நிலையில் சில தினங்களுக்கு முன்பாக பஞ்சாப் மாநிலம் லூதியானாவில், பொது முடக்கத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டோருக்கு உணவு விநியோகம் செய்யப்பட்டது. இதனை போலீஸ் கான்ஸ்டபிள் அஜய் சிங் விடியோ எடுத்து டிக்டாக்கில் வெளியிட்டுள்ளார்.

வெங்கேடஸ்வரலுவின் கிராமத்தை சேர்ந்த ஒருவர் கடந்த வியாழன் அன்று இந்த வீடியோவை பார்த்து, இது அவர்தானா என்பதை உறுதி செய்ய, வெங்கடேஸ்வரலுவின் மகள் கனகதுர்காவிடம் காண்பித்துள்ளார். இதில், 2 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு காணாமல் போன தனது தந்தைதான் என்பதை துர்கா உறுதி செய்தார்.

புதுக்கோட்டை காந்தி நகரில் வசிக்கும் ராஜூ - வசந்தா தம்பதிக்கு 5 மகள்கள், 2 மகன்கள் என மொத்தம் 7 பிள்ளைகள். இதில், 4 பெண்கள், 2 ஆண்கள் என 6 பேர் காது கேட்காத, வாய் பேச முடியாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள். கடைக்குட்டி பெண்ணான தனலட்சுமி மட்டும் எந்தவித பிரச்னையும் இல்லாமல் பிறந்துவிட்டார்.

பல வருடங்களாகவே செருப்பு தைத்து குடும்பத்தைக் காப்பாற்றி வந்த ராஜூ, தண்டுவட பாதிப்பால் கடந்த 10 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் முடங்கிவிட்டார். அதன்பின்பு, வீட்டு வேலைக்குச் சென்று குடும்பத்தைக் காப்பாற்றிவந்த வசந்தாவும் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டு வீட்டிலேயே முடங்கவே, படிப்பைப் பாதியில் நிறுத்திய கடைக்குட்டி தனலட்சுமி, அம்மா செய்துவந்த வேலையான வீட்டு வேலையைச் செய்து தனது அப்பா அம்மாவுடன், மாற்றுத்திறனாளி சகோதர சகோதரிகளையும் காப்பாற்றிவந்தார். இந்த நிலையில், ஊரடங்கு உத்தரவால் தனலட்சுமிக்கு வீட்டு வேலை கிடைக்கவில்லை.

அதனால், அந்தக் குடும்பம் சாப்பாட்டுக்கே சிரமப்படும் நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த நேரத்தில், அரசு நிவாரணம் கொடுக்கவில்லை என்றாலும், கழிவறை கழுவும் வேலையாக இருந்தாலும், ஒரு வேலையை அரசு ஏற்பாடு செய்து கொடுத்தால் குடும்பத்தை மீட்டுக்கொண்டு வந்துவிடுவேன் என்று கூறினார். இதுபற்றி ஜூன் 27-ம் தேதி, "9 பேரில் 6 பேர் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள்!' -கொரோனா ஊரடங்கால் பரிதவிக்கும் குடும்பம்" என்ற தலைப்பில் விகடன் இணையதளத்தில் விரிவாக செய்தியைப் பதிவு செய்திருந்தோம்.

இதைப் பார்த்த நகராட்சி ஆணையர் சுப்ரமணியன், உடனே அதிகாரிகளை அனுப்பிவைத்து, அந்தக் குடும்பம் குறித்த விவரங்களைத் திரட்டினார். இதுகுறித்த தகவலை சுகாதாரத்துறை அமைச்சர் விஜயபாஸ்கரின் கவனத்துக்குக் கொண்டுசென்ற ஆணையர், அவரிடம் அந்தக் குடும்பத்தின் நிலை குறித்துக் கூறியுள்ளார். உடனே, அந்தப் பெண்ணுக்கு தூய்மைப்பணியாளர் வேலையைக் கொடுக்க அமைச்சர் பரிந்துரைசெய்தார். தற்போது, தனலட்சுமி நகராட்சியில் தூய்மைப் பணியாளராக வேலையைத் தொடங்கிவிட்டார்.

தனலட்சுமியிடம் பேசினோம், " மூணு இடத்துல வீட்டு வேலை செஞ்சு குடும்பத்தைக் காப்பாத்திட்டு இருந்தேன். ஊரடங்கு வந்ததாலதான் வீட்டு வேலைக்கும் போக முடியாம ரொம்பவே கஷ்டப்பட்டுட்டு இருந்தேன். சாப்பாட்டுக்கும் வழியில்லை. அந்த நேரத்தில், தெரிஞ்ச அண்ணன் ஒருத்தரு, அம்மா உணவகத்தின் மூலம் கொஞ்சநாள் சாப்பாடு கிடைக்க வழி செஞ்சாரு. தூய்மைப் பணியாளர் வேலை கிடைச்சா போதும் என்றுதான் நெனச்சுக்கிட்டு இருந்தேன். நான் எதிர்பார்க்கவே இல்லை, வேலை கிடைச்சிருச்சு. நல்லா வேலைபார்த்து இந்த வேலையை கெட்டியா பிடிச்சிக்குவேன். என்னுடைய வேலைக்காக விகடன் செஞ்ச இந்த உதவியை எங்க காலம் உள்ள வரைக்கும் மறக்க மாட்டோம்" என்றார் நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன்.

நகராட்சி ஆணையர் சுப்ரமணியனிடம் பேசினோம். " விகடன் இணையதளத்தில் வெளியான செய்தியை முழுமையாகப் படித்தேன். கடைசி வரியில், தூய்மைப் பணியாளர் வேலை கொடுத்தால்கூட போதும் என்று அந்தப் பெண் கூறியிருந்தார். தனலட்சுமியைப் போன்றவர்கள், கண்டிப்பாக மக்களுக்காக உழைப்பார்கள் என்று முடிவுசெய்துதான் அமைச்சருக்குத் தகவல் கொடுத்தேன். அவரும் பார்த்துவிட்டு, உடனே பணி கொடுக்க உத்தரவிட்டார். நகராட்சியில் தற்போது தற்காலிக தூய்மைப்பணியாளர் வேலை கொடுத்துள்ளோம். விரைவில் நிரந்தர தூய்மைப் பணியாளராக்கிவிடுவோம்" என்கிறார் உறுதியான குரலில்.

கொரோனா ஊரடங்கு உத்தரவால், தற்போது தனலட்சுமிக்குச் சரிவர வீட்டுவேலை கூட கிடைக்கவில்லை என்பதால், சாப்பாட்டுக்கே சிரமப்படும் நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது அந்தக் குடும்பம். எப்படிக் குடும்பத்தைக் காப்பாற்றப் போகிறோம் என்று தெரியாமல் தனலட்சுமி பரிதவித்து வருகிறார்.

தனலட்சுமியிடம் பேசினோம், ``அப்பா, அம்மா வீட்டிலேயே முடங்கினதுக்கு அப்புறம் வேற வழியில்லாமல்தான் வீட்டு வேலைக்குப் போக ஆரம்பிச்சேன். அக்கா எல்லாரும் ஆரம்பத்துல என்னோட வீட்டு வேலைக்கு வந்து ஒத்தாசையாக இருந்தாங்க. பக்கத்துல வந்து கூப்பிட்டு வேலை சொல்ல வேண்டியிருக்குன்னு சொல்லி, அந்த வீட்டு முதலாளி வேலைக்கு வேண்டாம்னு அவங்கள விரட்டி விட்டுட்டாரு.

நெல்லை மாவட்டம் மானூர் அருகே உள்ள உக்கிரன்கோட்டையை சேர்ந்தவர் கிறிஸ்டோபர் (வயது 43). தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் வேலை செய்து வந்தார். மேலும் இவர் பேச முடியாத மற்றும் காது கேளாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளி ஆவார். இந்த நிலையில் நேற்று மதியம் தனது மொபட்டில் அருகில் உள்ள ரெட்டியார்பட்டிக்கு சென்று விட்டு உக்கிரன்கோட்டைக்கு திரும்பி வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அப்போது அந்த வழியாக கழுகுமலையை சேர்ந்த கணேசன் (60) என்பவர் ஓட்டி வந்த லாரியும், அவரது மொபட்டும் மோதிக் கொண்டன. இதில் கிறிஸ்டோபர் படுகாயம் அடைந்து சம்பவ இடத்திலேயே பரிதாபமாக இறந்தார்.

இதுகுறித்து கிறிஸ்டோபரின் சகோதரி மெர்லின் (40), மானூர் போலீசில் புகார் செய்தார். அதன் பேரில் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் சிவகுமார் வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்து விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகிறார்.

இறந்து போன கிறிஸ்டோபருக்கு அபிதா (40) என்ற மனைவியும், மேபல் (6) என்ற மகனும் உள்ளனர். இதில் அபிதாவும் வாய் பேச முடியாத மற்றும் காது கேளாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளி என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

SAI to appoint differently-abled coaches for hearing and speech impaired athletes

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) may soon appoint differently-abled coaches to work with hearing and speech impaired athletes after Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju “agreed in principle” to the recommendation of All India Sports Council for Deaf (AISCFD).

In a virtual meeting with the Sports Minister, which was also attended by 16 other National Sports Federations (NSFs), the AISCFD on Thursday highlighted the need for differenty abled coaches for its athletes for clear communication.

“The All India Sports Council for Deaf highlighted the communication problems of their athletes with able bodied coaches and requested the Minister to consider employing differently-abled coaches for hearing and speech impaired athletes,” an NSF official who was present in the meeting told PTI.

“The Minister applauded the suggestion and agreed in principle. He asked the Sports Authority of India officials to look into the matter on urgent basis.” Thursday’s meeting was the second round of virtual meeting of Rijiju with NSFs after he interacted with 15 federations on Tuesday to discuss the way forward in terms of training of athletes, participation in national and international competitions and organising sporting events in India.

Besides AISCFD, others present in Thursday’s meeting were NSF officials from tennis, kabaddi, chess, basketball, bridge, billiards and snooker, equestrian, handball, kayaking and canoeing, squash, sepaktakraw, volleyball, wushu, yachting, Special Olympic Bharat and Association of Indian University.

During the meeting the NSFs discussed their short and long-term goals with the minister and called for immediate resumption of training which has been suspended since March because of the coronavirus-forced lockdown.

“The NSFs shared their short and long term goals with the minister. They said their immediate priority is to resume training and assess whether small events can be orgainsed without spectators in a controlled environment,” an official present in the meeting said.

“The NSFs also discussed their long-term goals which is primarily preparing for big events. They said they are looking start their national training camps from September or October.” The official said most of the NSFs said they are yet to finalise their Annual Competition and Training Calendar as they are still waiting for the finalisation of international calendar which has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association sought the government’s permission to resume training of their 20 to 30 top athletes in a green zone. Wushu, handball and sepaktakraw federations called on the government to include their sports in Khelo India Games.

WHO’s Covid course in ISL to help the hearing-impaired

KOCHI: The Covid-19 pandemic has ushered in the new normal of social distancing. While social distancing in itself has brought many discomforts to the general public, its effect on the hearing-impaired community has been manifold. Many of them are left with very few authentic sources of information on the virus. In this context, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has uploaded a course on ‘Introduction to Covid-19’, in Indian Sign Language (ISL), ensuring accessibility to the deaf community. The course is available on the Massive Open Online Course platform of WHO (OpenWHO). The video in sign language has been developed by ISL interpreter Vinayachandran B S, a native of Thiruvananthapuram.

As per the 2011 Census, 2.68 crore Indians were found to be disabled out of a population of 121 crore. Of the total number of disabled, 19 per cent were registered as hearing-impaired. The Indian Sign Language is a mother tongue of sorts for the community, even though technological advancements such as hearing aids have made it possible for the deaf to communicate. The course can be utilised by deaf community and rehabilitation professionals across the country. Uploaded in May, the course has over 40,000 enrolments so far.

“There was a barrage of misinformation about the pandemic. The hearing-impaired community is one that is at a risk of imbibing such information. Hence I wrote to the WHO about the possibility of making verified information available in ISL. Their response was immediate and there was constant support throughout the process. The video in sign language also has voice-over in Hindi, to make it accessible for all,” said Vinayachandran who is currently working on two more videos to be added to the course. He had also been preparing the Covid-19 news bulletin for NISH, Thiruvananthapuram for three months since the outbreak of pandemic. The one-of-a-kind initiative of the institute ensured that there were daily news updates on the situation for the deaf community.

“Information being circulated by various agencies on the frontlines of combating the pandemic is in print format. The deaf community has relatively poor literacy skills making this information obsolete for them. ISL is the main medium of communication for a majority, hence such a video on the platform of WHO will help a large number of disabled people as well as professionals,” said Dr Sumi Mathew, director of Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities, Mumbai.The Rehabilitation Council of India has taken an initiative to promote WHO courses on Covid-19 among RCI’s approved institutions and certified rehabilitation professionals.
