Audiologist P Sellam, 36, who was working at the office of the district differently-abled welfare department, was arrested following complaints filed by parents of the victims. Sellam was suspended by the department.
The victims' parents accused Sellam of molesting their daughters in the garb of testing their hearing disability at an exclusive audiology centre in the office while they were made to wait outside on Thursday.
The women were studying Plus Two at a special school in Nagapattinam, which had asked them to obtain a hearing disability certificate from the Trichy district differently-abled welfare department as they belong to this district.
"Around 4pm, he took my daughter inside the room and asked me to wait outside. When my daughter came out after half-an-hour, she looked very upset. The other two women also looked sad after the tests. Later, Sellam provided a new hearing machine to my daughter," said a mother of one of the women.
The victims informed about the incident to their parents after reaching home, prompting them to lodge a complaint with the police on Friday.
On receiving the complaint, the police enquired with the victims and registered a case under section 354 (a) and (b) of the IPC. Sellam was arrested and produced before the court, which remanded him in police custody.
As soon as the case was booked, district differently-abled welfare officer Samynathan sent a letter to his higher officials in Chennai. Based on the letter, the state commissioner of the department placed Sellam under suspension.
Meanwhile, irate family members of the victims manhandled a senior officer of the district differently-abled welfare department at the court police station here when he came to enquire with the women about the incident. They attacked him mistaking as the accused but was saved by the police promptly.
