A 30-year-old deaf and mute woman was allegedly raped by a Pakistani soldier in a Lahore-bound train. The suspect, a sepoy in Punjab Regiment and posted in Chaman, Balochistan, has been arrested by the Railways police and a rape case has been registered against him on the complaint of the woman’s brother-in-law. According to the FIR, the woman, a mother of three, was travelling with her sister and brother-in-law to Lahore from Quetta by Akbar Bugti Express on Saturday night. When she went to washroom a man also entered there and raped her, The Dawn newspaper reported.

The woman told her sister-in-law about rape by sign language who alerted the Railways police. The police searched a couple of bogies and arrested the suspect. Later he was identified as a soldier of the Army.

“My sister-in-law narrated the incident by using sign language and also pointed to the man who was sleeping in other bogie near the washroom,” he said. He also complained that police had his sister-in-law medically examined thrice.

Meanwhile, the army personnel had contacted the police and sought custody of the suspect for trial under military laws.

Missing Metro girl: Crime Branch takes over probe

Suspecting that the hearing- and speech-impaired girl who went missing from a Metro station on April 21 may be trapped in a human trafficking racket, Delhi Police have transferred the case to the anti-human trafficking unit of the Crime Branch. Special Commissioner of Police M K Meena confirmed that Crime Branch has taken over the case, which was being investigated by the Kashmere Gate Metro police station so far. Sunita, 19, who was travelling with her mother and sister, got left behind in the Metro at Jahangirpuri Metro Station. Her parents said the girl had “brain fever” growing up, which impaired her mental development.

CCTV footage showed Sunita deboarding the Metro at Adarsh Nagar and exiting the station from gate number 2. She did not have a token, but some passengers at the station helped her exit, police said. Sunita’s father Ram Saran told The Indian Express that the case being transferred to the Crime Branch had given the family fresh hope. Sources said the Metro police had reached out to police from other states. “Since the girl is differently-abled, there is a possibility that she may have been picked up by a gang or a racket operating in Delhi. We have approached police in neighbouring states and shared data to get any leads,” an officer said.

The Metro Police lodged a case under IPC Section 365 (abduction) at Kashmere Gate Metro police station — but only 10 days after the incident. The girl’s family has alleged that Sunita would not have gone missing had Metro officials taken timely action. After the incident, her mother had alleged: “Had Metro officials acted on time, my daughter would not be missing. Some people took me to a complaint room. Staff members told me they have informed the other station but nothing happened for two hours. After that, they told me to go home and wait for my daughter.”

Saran, a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district who has been living in Delhi for the last 30 years, said, “I have been spending all my time around Adarsh Nagar Metro station. I have talked to many rickshaw pullers and people around the Metro station to get leads.” Taking cognizance of The Indian Express report on the incident on April 26, the High Court had asked Delhi Police what it had done to trace the missing girl.

Kashmir organises first ever football coaching camp for deaf & mute kids

A special football coaching camp for deaf and mute players was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association in Srinagar. This was the first-ever football coaching camp in the Valley for disabled kids, namely ‘Grassroot’ in collaboration with youth sports and services. The camp focused on attracting the budding players and providing them with a good platform with proper guidance. The young players were taught various techniques from Valley’s most experienced coaches and all the children expressed their gratitude towards the initiative and said they want such kind of coaching camps in the future as well.

Jamie Foxx accused of disrespecting deaf community

Los Angeles May 28 (IANS) Actor Jamie Foxx has been accused by actor and deaf activist Nyle DiMarco of making fun of the deaf community following his appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.

DiMarco, winner of “America’s Next Top Model” and “Dancing with the Stars”, slammed Foxx for making up sign language and accused him of mocking the deaf community, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“Jamie Foxx, it is straight up disrespectful to make up sign language. Everything is in gibberish. Also Jimmy Fallon how was this allowed? Where’s the cultural sensitivity. Not comedy when you make fun of others,” DiMarco wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

DiMarco later wrote an open letter.

“Jamie Foxx’s behavior with Jimmy Fallon on ‘Fallon Tonight’ should not be tolerated anywhere. We simply do not make fun at the expense of other cultures, especially those with a history of being marginalised. When we do this, progress takes a step backward,” he said.

“Sign language is important to me because it’s the bedrock of deaf culture. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities says sign language is a human right of deaf people, and out of the 70 million worldwide, only two per cent have access to education in sign language,” he added.

AISCD sends show cause notice to Parul

The All India Sports Council of the Deaf has sent a show cause notice to tennis player Parul Gupta, seeking a written response to the flood of complaints by her father Avinash Gupta to various authorities including the international federation, regarding the selection of the Indian team for Deaflympics, among others.

Signed by both R.C. Sathian, the president, and Walter Fernandez, secretary general, the four-page letter has sought explanation for various mis-demeanours of the player, which includes the display of a placard against the AISCD during the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Chinese Taipei.

Parul, who finished third in the National Games for the Deaf in Chennai, had argued all along that she should be part of the team for the Deaflympics, and had even moved the Delhi High Court.

However, the AISCD had maintained that it was following procedures and the ball was in the court of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) which was in the process of approving the national camp and the selection trials.

Parul is part of a long list of probables who will go through the camp and selection trials at the DLTA Complex in June.

Parul had tried to gain entry for the Deaflympics directly from the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, as she had been accorded similar entry last time four years ago. However, the ICSD had categorically stated this time that all entries would only be accepted through the National federations.

“You and your father always contact ICSD directly which itself is a serious misconduct, breaking the rule. As a bank employee, can you bring any grievance to the bank chairman without following proper channel? Your father’s acts will make only problems for your future,” the notice warned.

Specifying that the AISCD would initiate disciplinary action against her after the Deaflympics, the national federation sought Parul’s explanation before the selection trials scheduled to start on June 1.

“AISCD aims to encourage efficient sportspersons always but we can’t tolerate the indiscipline of the players who are not obeying the rules and regulations of the organisation and defaming it,” the letter concluded.

An initiative to hear the voices of the unheard saw differently-abled people teach us how to communicate better with them

Remember playing dumb charades with your friends? The game where words and phrases are communicated with gestures and signs is a fun activity to indulge in. But, in the world of the differently-abled, this game is their lingo where signs become their language.

That was the premise of Fingerchats, a community meet where you use fingers to chat. It was held recently at the Rangoli Metro Arts Centre. Organised by Enable India, the aim of the event was to learn sign language from differently-abled people to facilitate easier communication.

Vishnu Ashok, who is hearing impaired and one of the teachers at the meet, says: “I enjoy these activities. It is heart-warming to see so many people take interest in learning our language.”

Pointing out that it is better to learn Tamil in Tamil Nadu from a Tamilian rather than an American living there, the interaction saw participants return to their basics trying to communicate with sign language using alphabets, names of places and colours among others.


The initiative, hosted in collaboration with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), was also used to educate Metro staff using simple and relatable methodology. Vasanth Rao, the Chief Public Relations Officer of BMRCL, says: “I happened to notice one of the volunteers of Enable India in a coffee shop nearby. I was blown away by her use of gestures while conversing. I approached her immediately and told her that the BMRCL wants to partner with them to be sensitised to the needs of differently-abled people. Currently, we have ramped stations, wheelchairs and blind-compatible tiles and lifts.” Rao adds that this programme will help make their staff proficient in assisting and escorting differently-abled people.The event saw participants engage in learning using gustatory, olfactory and visual senses to talk with one another. Nirmala Das, a senior citizen at the meet, was full of enthusiasm to communicate with her differently-abled counterparts. “It was unforgettably mesmerising. I had a few acquaintances who were differently-abled when I was young. I became nostalgic when I came here. Learning sign language is gratifying and I’m sure I can put this to good use.”

Anup Ram, another energetic participant says: “This is an inimitable experience. The language was easy and relatable. I not only enjoyed the activities, but also ended up learning something offbeat.”

Kartik Ramnath, a young software engineer, who was curious about the event, says, “I was drawn to the uniqueness of this meet. I pride myself for successfully learning a lot of alphabets and basic words.” Joining him, Satish, an accountant, used gestures to sign: “It was wow!” Running out of more signs, he adds in words: “I have decided to attend the event next time as well. I want to be more involved in their initiatives.”

Kashmir hosts first football coaching camp for deaf, dumb

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 25 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Football Association has organised the first ever special football coaching camp for disabled kids, namely “GRASSROOT”, in collaboration with youth sports and services in Srinagar.

This grass root camp was organised for especially deaf and dumb children at synthetic turn in polo ground aimed to provide a proper platform to these special children.

The main purpose of this camp was to attract the budding players and provide them with a good platform along with proper infrastructure for them at teenage.

During the camp, a number of children participated zealously as they got the first chance to become the part of this kind of grass root coaching camp.

They also got to learn number of new techniques including warm-up, kicking, and heading, jumping and running from experienced coaches of the Valley.

The children from 10-16 years of age looked enthusiastic and demanded for such kind of coaching camps in future as well.

First in India: Friday namaz in sign language at Kerala mosque

MALAPPURAM: The austere beauty of azan or Muslim call to prayer might still elude them but a new mosque, specially designed to cater to differently-abledbelievers, will enable those who are hearing impaired to appreciate the finer points of a Friday sermon.

Inaugurated on Monday, Masjid Al-Rahma at Pulikkal in Malappuram, built on a serene 5-acre campus, has facilities whereby speeches during Friday namaz (qutuba) will be rendered in sign language, the first mosque to do so in the country. Similarly, sermons at every prayer meet in the mosque will avail the services of a sign language specialist and will be displayed on LCD screens installed on the walls of the mosque. The mosque has the capacity to accommodate around 500 people.

"Even when people with other disabilities benefit from religious talks and preaching during Friday namaz, the hearing impaired are left out. We hope this mosque would prove a blessing for them", said Musthafa Madani, chairman of Ability Foundation, a non-governmental charitable organisation under a leading Mujahid group. The mosque is also fitted with ramps, arm rests in toilets and wheel chairs meant for the differently abled.

Madani, whose NGO runs an institution with 300 differently-abled students, including 200 hearing impaired students, revealed that they first got the idea of a special mosque after the staff of the institution came to know that most of the hearing-impaired students were skipping prayer meets and Friday namaz as they were struggling to follow the sermons.

Hussain Madavoor, a senior Mujahid leader and also chief patron of Ability Foundation, said that the opening of the mosque dedicated to the hearing impaired is a great leap for the Muslim community. "It should be considered a historical event as an NGO, with the support of NRIs and local people irrespective of caste and religion, came together to promote equal opportunity for the disabled", he said. The mosque was formally inaugurated by C P Umar Sullami, president Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama in the presence of various Muslim scholars and religious leaders from across the state. The construction of the mosque began in October 2016 and the estimated cost of the project was around 75 lakh.

Jehan Daboo’s journey to the World Deaf Badminton Championships

Born with complete hearing loss, he was fortunate enough to have supportive parents who ensured he never felt out of place. Now a badminton sensation, Jehan Daboo is quite the inspiration.

In 2002, when he was just five years old, Jehan received a cochlear implant in his right ear. Although he was able to manage academics and badminton with the single implant, knowing that college would be more challenging, in 2012, he made an informed decision to receive an implant in his left ear as well. Now, he is confident enough around people to cope better with conversations and there has also been an improvement in his ability to follow his coach’s instructions.

In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Jehan’s mother Vahishtai Daboo said,

We worked with him rigorously by doing auditory verbal therapy since the time he was fitted with hearing aids to enable him to learn to listen and speak by using whatever residual hearing he had. As language started becoming more complex, we found that Jehan was finding it difficult to keep up with the pace at which his peers were talking and picking it up. This is when we decided to go in for a cochlear implant when he was five and a half years old.

In a chat with Humans of Bombay, Jehan said,

In 2006, I met my coach here—she called me to see how I play badminton and decided to take me on as a student. She didn’t ever take it easy on me because of my impairment. In fact, she pushed me harder and made me train longer! In 2011, when I was just 14 years old, she pushed me to participate in the World Deaf Badminton Championships. I was so nervous, I was the youngest player there and didn’t believe in myself…but she believed in me so blindly that I took the plunge and participated. Before the game, she said ‘don’t make this competition seem bigger than it is…think of it as just another game and play’ and I ended up winning a silver medal and getting selected to play for India!

I’ve played for India four times after that, and in 2015 I won a bronze medal for India in the Men’s Singles at the World Youth Deaf Badminton Championships. A huge reason for me getting here is that she trained me to believe I could achieve anything. So many times we exaggerate a flaw and let it take over us… but if you just shift your focus you realise that it’s a part of you, but doesn’t define who you are.

The same goes with our decisions—for instance, last year, I joined law school but I recently took the decision to drop out because I couldn’t cope and didn’t see myself as a lawyer. I found myself dreading classes and decided that I’d rather take some time off to figure out what I want to do with my life, rather than forcing myself to get a degree doing something I don’t love. So many people thought I was doing the wrong thing because I was giving up on getting a great degree and ‘wasting time’, but my parents supported my decision and said they were proud that I took control now, rather than later. So now, I’m doing things I love—playing badminton, volunteering, and just figuring out what I want to do—and I’m happy because I know that I have no limitations…and once I find where my passion really lies, I will succeed.

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing in both ears and as of 2014, they had been used experimentally in some people who had gone deaf in one ear after learning how to speak.

Tamil Nadu SSLC results 2017: Hearing-impaired athlete dashes ahead of hurdles

CHENNAI: On Friday, when the Class X State Board resultswere announced, 15-year-old K Nivedha did not hear the excited chatter of her parents, but there was no mistaking their expressions of absolute joy.

It was the same expressions they had in February this year when Nivedha, who was born deaf, won a gold medal at the National level for long jump. This time it was because she had scored 73% in the Class X exams.

"Though Nivedha wears hearing aid, her hearing is very feeble. She finds speech difficult as well," say her parents K Kumar and Vijaya. "Things are difficult for Nivedha, but her teachers at the Little Flower convent in Nungambakkam supported her every step of the way. They love her and encouraged her not just in her academics but in sports as well."

Vijaya says she knew life was going to be difficult for her daughter when she was born deaf, but she was determined to ensure she had as much support possible from the beginning for both her academics and extra-curriculars. "In Class II, she won a district level running competition and in Class V, she came first in district level backward running competition," says Vijaya. "That's when we understood her innate talent and we have been encouraging her since," she adds.

"Her future is in sports and we are trying to figure out how we can support her so she can fulfil her dreams," says Kumar.

The differently-abled have showed their mettle once again. In Chennai district, the total number of blind candidates who appeared for the exam was 55. Barring one, others were successful. In the aurally challenged category, 87 of the 120 students passed. Alos, 32 of the 36 physically challenged candidates came out with flying colours.

Little Flower Convent for the Visually Impaired on GN Chetty Road in T Nagar recorded 100 per cent pass. At the School for the Deaf, 27 students passed and one failed. At the Government Higher Secondary School for the Blind at Poonamallee, the institution had achieved a pass percentage of 86 per cent. At the MGR Home & HSS for the Speech and Hearing Impaired at Ramapuram, all 20 students passed with E Brindha (892/1,000) emerging as Kancheepuram district topper.

19-year-old C. Tamil Selvan was apprehensive when he went in to write his Class X maths paper, but despite his fears, he ended up scoring 96. With a total of 480, the visually impaired student of the St. Louis Institute for Deaf and Blind is now aiming for a degree in English or history and then dreams of joining the civil services. He wants everyone who knows a visually impaired child in their neighbourhood to help them get into school.

Students with disabilities have generally fared well. At Little Flower Convent School for the Deaf, G. Thilakavathy was the topper. “She would study until midnight and then, wake up at 3 a.m. and study again,” her mother said. Even when the doors of their house broke during Cyclone Vardah, she kept studying. J. Jayashri, who came second in the deaf school, has only partial vision in her left eye, but studied even through three days of a power cut during the cyclone, her mother said. All the school’s 19 students passed. At the blind school, all the 9 students who wrote the exams passedwith A grades. A. Farida, who her teachers said was a budding singer, topped with 476 and R. Nancy Mary came second with 467. While all the 18 visually impaired students at St. Louis passed, two of the 23 hearing impaired students failed in Tamil, said principal Br. John Xavier.

22 of the 23 students passed at The Dr. MGR Home and Higher Secondary School for the Speech and Hearing Impaired, while one failed, also in Tamil. At the CSI School for Deaf, 19 of the 25 students passed. The students found Maths difficult, said James Albert, the principal. All 22 students of the Government Higher Secondary School for the Blind, Poonamallee, and both visually impaired students of Nethrodaya’s school passed.

In Chennai district, 64 children with physical and other disabilities too wrote the exams and 59 passed, as per government figures.

Many of the students thanked their supportive teachers and the efforts they had put in, especially during the final term, for their successes.

'புதிய தலைமுறை' தொலைக்காட்சியில் கடந்த ஆறு ஆண்டுகளாக சைகை மொழி செய்தி வாசிப்பாளராக பணியாற்றி வருகிறார், விஜயா பாஸ்கர். 60 வயதை தொட்டிருக்கும் இவர், தமிழ், ஆங்கிலம், இந்தி, தெலுங்கு போன்ற பல மொழிகளில் வல்லவர். சைகை மொழியில் இந்த அளவுக்கு திறமையுடன் இருக்க, இவரது குடும்பப் பின்னணியும் ஒரு காரணம்.

''என்னோடு பிறந்த ஐந்து பேரில் இரண்டு பேருக்கு மட்டும்தான் பேச வரும். மத்தவங்களுக்கு பேசவும் வராது; காதும் கேட்காது. எங்க அப்பா, அம்மா பல டாக்டர்கள்கிட்டே காண்பிச்சும் எந்தப் பயனும் இல்லை. எத்தனை சிகிச்சை எடுத்தாலும் குணப்படுத்த முடியாதுனு சொல்லிட்டாங்க. அதற்குப் பிறகு, என் அக்கா, தம்பிகள் என்னையே அதிகம் நம்பி இருந்தாங்க. அவங்க எங்கே போகணும்னாலும் நானும் அவங்களோடு இருக்கணும்னு நினைப்பாங்க. அவங்களுக்கு எல்லா விஷயத்தையும் புரியவைக்கிறது என்னால மட்டும்தான் முடியும்னு நினைச்சாங்க. ஒரு படத்துக்குப் போனாலும், ஒவ்வொரு சீனையும் அவங்களுக்கு விளக்கி சொல்லிட்டு இருப்பேன். என் கண் பார்ப்பதை கைகள் செய்து காண்பிச்சுட்டே இருக்கும். இப்படி சைகையின் மூலமா அவங்களுக்கு நிறைய விஷயங்களைப் புரியவெச்சேன். அப்படித்தான் சைகை மொழி என் கைவசமாச்சு. ஸ்கூல்ல படிக்கும்போதும் இப்படிப்பட்டவங்களை தேடிப்போய் உதவி பண்ற அளவுக்கு ஆர்வம் ஏற்பட்டுச்சு. அவங்களும் அவங்களைச் சார்ந்தவங்களும் என்னை நன்றியோடு வாழ்த்தியபோதுதான் நான் ஒருவித சேவையைச் செய்துட்டு இருக்கேன்னு புரிய ஆரம்பிச்சுது. கல்லூரிப் படிப்பை முடிச்சதும் வாய் பேச, காது கேட்க இயலாதவங்களுக்கு உதவி செய்ய ஆரம்பிச்சேன். போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷன், நீதிமன்றம் என சென்று பல வழக்குகளில் மொழிப்பெயர்ப்பாளராக இருந்திருக்கேன்'' என்று விஜயா பாஸ்கர் சொல்லும் ஒவ்வொரு வரியும் நெகிழவைக்கிறது.

தொடர்ந்து பலருக்கும் சைகை செய்து வந்ததால், ஒரு மாதம் கைகளைத் தூக்கவே முடியாத அளவுக்கு சிரமப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். சிகிச்சை எடுத்த ஒரு சில நாள்களுக்குள் மீண்டும் தன் பணியினைத் தொடர்ந்திருக்கிறார். தான் சந்தித்த துயரமான நேரங்களையும் மெல்லிய புன்னகையுடன் பகிர்கிறார்.

''ஸ்கூல், காலேஜ் என பல இடங்களில் பாதிப்பு உள்ளவர்களுடன் எந்தப் பாகுபாடும் இல்லாமல் பழகுவேன். தோள் மேல் கைப்போட்டு அவங்களை கூட்டிட்டுப் போறது, பக்கத்துல உட்கார்ந்து பேசுறது இப்படி பல நேரங்களில் நெருக்கமாக இருப்பேன். இதைப் பார்த்துட்டு நிறைய பேர், 'எப்பப் பாரு பசங்களோடயே சுத்திட்டு இருக்கா'னு பேசுவாங்க. அந்த மாதிரி நேரங்களில் தனிமையில் அழுதிருக்கேன். ஆரம்பத்தில் பயமும் பதற்றமும் இருந்தாலும் போகப் போக தெளிவாகிட்டேன். என் மனசுக்கு நெருக்கமான ஒரு சேவையா இது மாறிட்டதால் இன்னும் ஆர்வமாக ஈடுபட ஆரம்பிச்சேன். கல்யாணம் ஆனப் பிறகு இதனால் என்ன மாதிரி பிரச்னைகள் வருமோனு ஒரு பக்கம் பயம் இருந்துச்சு. ஆனால், கடவுள் புண்ணியத்தில் எனக்கு அற்புதமான கணவர் கிடைச்சார். நான் செய்யும் பணியைப் பற்றி நல்லாப் புரிஞ்சிக்கிட்டார். சில நேரங்களில் இரவு வீட்டுக்கு வர தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டாலும், விஷயம் புரிஞ்சு நடந்துப்பார். அதனாலதான், என்னால் இந்தச் சேவையில் தொடர்ந்து ஈடுபட முடியுது'' என்கிற விஜயா பாஸ்கர் பல மொழிப்பெயர்ப்புகளுக்கு கட்டணம் வசூலிக்காமல், இலவசமாகவே உதவி வருகிறார்.

''ஒருமுறை ஓர் ஏழை பெற்றோரின் மகளுக்கு பிரச்னை. அந்தப் பொண்ணுக்கு பேசவும் வராது, காதும் கேட்காது. பாலியல் தொந்தரவினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட அவளால், என்ன நடந்ததென சொல்ல முடியலை. பொண்ணோட அப்பா அவளை ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கும், போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனுக்கும் கூட்டிக்கிட்டு அலைஞ்சுட்டு இருந்தார். போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனில் இருந்த அந்தப் பொண்ணுக்கிட்ட சைகை மூலமாக நடந்தை தெரிஞ்சுகிட்டு போலீசுக்குச் சொன்னேன். அப்புறம்தான் வழக்குப் பதிவுசெய்து விசாரிக்க ஆரம்பிச்சாங்க. நீதிமன்றங்களில் வெளிப்படையாக நடந்தவற்றை சொல்லும் சூழ்நிலை ஏற்படும். அங்கே இலைமறைக்காயாக எல்லாம் சொல்ல முடியாது. பாலியல் வழக்குகள் வரும்போது பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் பற்றி சொல்லும்போது எனக்கே கஷ்டமாக இருக்கும். அங்கே சொல்லும் நொடிகளில் அந்தக் கொடுமையின் வலியை உணர முடியும். சில வழக்குகளில் மொழிப்பெயர்ப்பு செய்துட்டு வீட்டுக்கு வந்ததும் ரொம்ப நேரம் விடாமல் அழுதிருக்கேன்'' என்கிற விஜயா பாஸ்கருக்கு இந்த சைகை மொழி பணியில் சில ஆறுதல்களும் கிடைக்கிறது.

The DMRC and Metro police will also have to submit an affidavit pertaining to all missing persons’ cases, said a bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice A K Pathak. Counsel for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) informed the court that as per CCTV footage, the missing woman exited the station without a ticket after tailgating with another passenger.

After failing to exit two times, she was finally successful on the third attempt, said the counsel, underlining CISF’s primary responsibility to screen passengers and their luggage before entering Metro stations. The DMRC said AFC exit gates were manned in stations, where there is heavy rush of passengers. It also said the sensors of the AFC gates were unable to detect if two persons exited the gate. Senior standing counsel for Delhi Government, Rahul Mehra, said the speech and hearing impaired woman “shadowed along” with another person, and the machine allowed two people to exit at one time. Had the machine allowed only one person to exit, the woman would have been within the confines of the Metro station. This posed larger security concerns, and from the perspective of citizen security, there had to be some Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which could be implemented by the DMRC, he said. After The Indian Express had reported about the girl going missing, the Delhi High Court, taking cognizance of the news report, asked Delhi Police what it has done to trace the woman and asked them to file a status report. DC visits senior citizens home, school for deaf and dumb

Jalandhar, May 12
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Sharma today visited the Red Cross Senior Citizens Home and the school for deaf and dumb. The DC took a stock of arrangements at the school and home. He also interacted with inmates of the home.

Besides checking the quality of food, medical facilities, boarding and lodging facilities in the school’s hostel, Sharma also instructed the authorities to ensure 24-hour health check-up facilities at the school.

He directed the officials of the Powercom to ensure the round-the-clock power supply to the two institutes.

The DC also listened to the grievances of senior citizens and children. He directed the officials address their grievances at the earliest.

ADC (General) Gurmeet Singh, Red Cross secretary Paramjeet Singh and SDO Panchayati Raj Parminder Beri were also present with the DC.

Telangana Becomes The First State In India To Introduce Vehicle Signs For Hearing Impaired

How many of you know of someone who was born hearing impaired? How many of you have parents who have turned hearing impaired due to age or other factors? Almost every one of us knows of someone who is completely or partially deaf & is more than capable of driving. Yet the thought of them out in a vehicle alone, gives us nightmares because of worry. Telangana, in a laudable move, has become the first state in India to introduce a sign to be put on vehicles being driven by those who are hearing impaired.

Designed by Graphic Designer Manikanta Annapragada from Hyderabad, he is also the first person to have obtained a licence in the hearing impaired category. The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry had previously granted permission for those who are hearing impaired to obtain licenses if they pass the driving test, in November 2016.

The state transport department has even finalised the logo designed that was chosen from eight different designs submitted by Manikanta. The logo is red, containing the mark of those who are hearing impaired and reads – Driver is deaf, please watch out. The logo will be placed four inches high and three inches wide on the rear of two wheelers and three inches high and two inches wide on the front. For four wheelers, the logo will be six inches tall and five inches wide in the rear and four inches tall and three inches wide in the front.

It is also mandatory that vehicles have rear view mirrors on both sides. The Telangana state transport department has reportedly told DC that almost 10 people have applied for learner’s license in the hearing impaired category.

It is a common misconception that those who are deaf cannot drive, that if you can’t hear you can’t drive. But deaf drivers around the world prove otherwise & it’s time for India to prove so too. Till 2016, hearing impaired drivers in India have driven around without licenses, despite being capable enough to drive. The issuing of these licenses and the sign will change the scenario in not just Telangana but hopefully all of India too. Andhra Pradesh, are you listening?

Man arrested for raping 5-year-old deaf and dumb girl

VARANASI: A 5-year-old deaf and dumb girl was allegedly raped by a villager identified as Sanjay (24). He was caught by the villagers and handed over to police on Thursday morning. The girl is battling for life at a hospital.

Sanjay, a native of Ghazipur, works as labourer. He kidnapped the girl, who was also sleeping with her mother outside their hut. She being deaf and dumb could not raise an alarm. Taking advantage of it, the accused took her in a neighbouring field and raped her.

When the girl's mother woke up, she found her missing and raised an alarm. The people of the locality came out of their houses and started looking for the girl.

இதனால் எவ்வித சைகை மொழியைக் கொண்டும் மாதுவால் உரையாட முடியவில்லை.

அதிகாரிகள் அவரது கைபேசியையும் பறிமுதல் செய்தனர்.

இதனால் தமது நிலைமை குறித்து விமான நிலையத்தில் அவருக்காகக் காத்திருந்த காதலருக்கும் தெரிவிக்க முடியவில்லை.

அதற்கு பதிலாக காது கேளாத அவரைத் தொலைபேசியில் ஜப்பானிய மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளருடன்பேச வைத்தனர் அதிகாரிகள்.

இவ்வாறு தமது உடற்குறைகளைக் கருத்தில் கொள்ளாமல் தமக்கு எதிராகப் பாகுபாடு காட்டியதாகவும் தம்மை அவமானப்படுத்தியதாகவும் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு எதிராக அவர் புகார் செய்துள்ளார்.

மறுநாள் விடுவிக்கப்பட்ட அவர் மீண்டும் ஜப்பான் திரும்பியுள்ளார்.

காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளி தாளாளர் மீது பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை புகார்!

கோவை மாவட்டம் கோதபாளையத்தில் உள்ள காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளியின் தாளாளராக இருப்பவர் முருகசாமி. சிறு வயதில் இருந்தே காது கேளாமல், வாய் பேச முடியாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளியாக இருக்கும் முருகசாமி பல்வேறு இன்னல்களுக்கு இடையே கடந்த 1997-ஆம் ஆண்டு இப்பள்ளியை ஆரம்பித்தார். 7-ஆம் வகுப்பு வரை மட்டுமே இருந்த இந்த பள்ளியை பின்னர் 12-ஆம் வகுப்பு வரை தரம் உயர்த்திய முருகசாமியின் முயற்சியில், தற்போது 300-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவ, மாணவியர்கள் பயின்றுவருகின்றனர். கல்வி மட்டுமின்றி விளையாட்டிலும் இப்பள்ளியைச் சேர்ந்த மாணவர்கள் பல்வேறு சாதனைகளை படைத்துள்ளனர்.

இதே பள்ளியில் கடந்த 2012 - 13-ஆம் ஆண்டில் படித்த மாணவி ஒருவர், பள்ளியின் தாளாளர் முருகசாமி தன்னை பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை செய்ததாக அதிர்ச்சியூட்டும் புகாரை தெரிவித்துள்ளார். தற்போது திருமணமாகி தனது கணவருடன் வாழ்ந்துவரும் அந்த பெண் கருமத்தம்பட்டி காவல் நிலையத்தில் இது குறித்து புகார் அளித்துள்ளார். தான் படிக்கும் போது முருகசாமி தன்னை பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை செய்ததால் கர்ப்பம் அடைந்ததாகக் கூறும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண், பொள்ளாச்சியில் உள்ள ஒரு மருத்துவமனைக்கு அழைத்து சென்று முருகசாமி தன் கருவை கலைத்ததாகவும் கூறி பரபரப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளார். முருகசாமி தன்னை மிரட்டியதால் அப்போது இது குறித்து முன்பு வெளியில் கூறவில்லை என்றும் தற்போது அங்கு படிக்கும் மாணவிகளின் நலன்களைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு புகார் அளித்துள்ளதாகவும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண் கூறியுள்ளார். 

கோவை மாவட்ட காவல் கண்காணிப்பாளர் ரம்யா பாரதி உத்தரவின்பேரில் கொலை மிரட்டல், பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை உள்ளிட்ட 5 பிரிவுகளின் கீழ் முருகசாமி மீது கருமத்தம்பட்டி போலீசார் வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்து அவரை கைது செய்துள்ளனர். இதே போல, குற்றத்திற்கு உடந்தையாக இருந்ததாகக் கூறி பள்ளி மேற்பார்வையாளரான சித்ரா தேவி, வார்டன் பரிமளா, மாற்றுத்திறனாளி பெண்ணான ரேவதி மற்றும் ரேவதியின் கணவர் ஆகியோர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர். தலைமறைவான மற்றொரு மேற்பார்வையாளரான ராணியை போலீசார் தேடிவருகின்றனர். 12-ஆம் வகுப்பு முடிந்து கல்லூரிக்கு செல்லவுள்ள சிலர் பள்ளி விடுதியில் தங்கவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும், அவர்களிடம் விசாரணை நடத்த உள்ளதாகவும் போலீசார் தரப்பில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளி நிர்வாக தரப்பு இது பொய்ப் புகார் எனவும் சட்டப்படி இதனை எதிர்கொள்வதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. இந்த பள்ளியில் பயிலும் மாணவிகள் மற்றும் அவர்களின் பெற்றோர், இந்த சம்பவம் அதிர்ச்சியளிப்பதாகவும், காவல்துறையினர் வந்து செல்வது அச்சமூட்டும் வகையில் உள்ளதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். புகார் கொடுத்த பெண் பள்ளியில் படித்தபோது செய்த தவறுகளுக்காக நடவடிக்கை எடுத்ததால் முருகசாமி மீது அவர் பொய் புகார் அளித்துள்ளதாக அந்த பள்ளி மாணவிகள் கூறுகின்றனர்.

கோதபாளையாம் காது கேளாதோர் பள்ளியின் தாளாளர் மீதான பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை புகரால் அந்த பள்ளியின் எதிர்காலம் கேள்விக்குறியாகியுள்ளது. இதனால் போலீசார் இந்த விவகாரத்தில் விரைவில் உண்மையை வெளிக்கொண்டுவர வேண்டுமென அப்பகுதி மக்கள் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளனர்.
