Deaflympics 2017: India bag gold, silver and two bronze medals in Turkey

Wrestler Virender Singh clinched gold in the 74kg freestyle event while golfer Diksha Dagar walked away with silver.

Indian wrestlers won a gold and two bronze medals in the ongoing 23rd Summer Deaflympics at Samsun in Turkey. Virender Singh clinched the gold in 74kg freestyle event as he beat Chakvetadze S (Georgia) by 18-9 points in the final bout. Ajay Kumar beat Babayan A of Armenia by 10-0 margin in 65kg freestyle to earn a bronze medal.

Sumit Dahiya bagged the other bronze by beating Ghamar Pour (Ireland) by 10-0 points in 97kg freestyle. Diksha Dagar scripted history after winning a silver medal in the women’s individual golf. The 16-year-old got a bye in the quarter-finals and then defeated Germany’s Gonzalez Podbicanin A 9 & 8 in the semifinals to set up a final clash with USA’s Yost Kaylin.

In the gold medal match, Diksha started well and was 3 up after six holes but Kaylin clinched the next three holes with two birdies to level the score after nine holes. In the play-off, Kaylin emerged winner to clinch the gold, while Diksha settled for the silver.

Lauding the performance of these sportspersons, 2010 Delhi Commonwealth discus throw gold winner Krishna Poonia said that the government should support them. “The government should support these deaf athletes. They should be looked after properly. They also brought laurels to the country. They should be given facilities and incentives on par with the para athletes,” Poonia said.

Allotment of Train Berths for Persons with Disabilities ( Indian Railways )

This Press Release is based on the information given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Rajen Gohain in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha on 26.07.2017 (Wednesday).

In order to provide better accessibility to persons with disability, short term facilities as detailed below have been planned at all stations, beginning with ‘A-1’, ‘A’ & ‘ B ’ category stations:

• Standard ramp for barrier free entry.
• Earmarking at least two parking lots.
• Non-slippery walk-way from parking lot to station building.
• Signages of appropriate visibility.
• At least one drinking water tap suitable for use by differently-abled persons.
• At least one toilet (on the ground floor).
• ‘May I help you ’ Booth.
• In addition, long term facilities, as detailed below, have been planned at ‘A-1’, ‘A’ & ‘B ’ category stations:
• Engraving on edges of platform.
• Provision of facility for inter-platform transfer.

Zone-wise details of railway stations provided with facilities for persons with disability as on 30.06.2017 are appended.

With a view to ensuring allotment of lower berths to persons with disability, following steps have been taken:-

(i) In addition to four berths in Sleeper class being earmarked for persons with disability(2 lower berths for the persons with disability and two upper/middle berths, for the escort) it has been decided to earmark a reservation quota of two berths in 3AC for persons with disability (lower berth for persons with disability and middle berth for their escort). This is in addition to the existing facility of booking in SLRD coaches of Garib Rath Express trains available to the persons with disability

(ii) Instructions have also been issued to make provision in the system to allot only lower berths to persons with disability in SLRD coaches of Garib Rath Express trains and upper berth to their attendant irrespective of the age of the attendant. In case any person with disability books accommodation without attendant, the upper berth will be kept vacant and released to RAC/waitlist passengers at the time of preparation of reservation charts.

குடியரசுத் தலைவர் மாளிகையில் இருந்தபோது மற்றொரு முறை ஹைதராபாத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மலைவாழ் மாணவர்கள் நுாற்றுக்கணக்கானவர்களை சந்திக்கும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரிடமும், ‘யார் யார் என்னென்னவாக ஆவீர்கள்’ எனக் கேட்டேன். ஒவ்வொருவரும் தங்கள் விருப்பங்களை சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்போது 9 ம் வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்த ஸ்ரீகாந்த் என்ற பார்வையற்ற மாணவன் ஒருவன், ‘சார் என் ஆசை, நான் ஒருநாள் இந்த நாட்டின் பார்வையற்ற முதல் குடியரசுத் தலைவனாவேன்’ என்றான். அவன் தன்னம்பிக்கையைக் கண்டு பிரமித்துப் போனேன். ‘உனது எண்ணம் பெரிது. ஆனால் விடாமுயற்சியோடு அறிவை தேடிப்பெற்று, கடுமையாக உழைத்தால் உன் லட்சியம் நிறைவேறும்' என வாழ்த்தினேன்.

வாழ்க்கையில் வெற்றி பெற 4 செயல்கள் அவசியம். முதலாவது, வாழ்க்கையில் மிகப்பெரிய லட்சியத்தை வகுத்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும். இரண்டாவது, அந்த லட்சியத்தை அடைய அறிவாற்றலை தொடர்ந்து பெருக்கிக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். அறிவை பெருக்குவது என்றால் நல்ல புத்தகங்களை வாசிப்பதும், சான்றோர்கள் மற்றும் ஆசிரியர்களின் கருத்துகளை ஊன்றிக்கேட்பது. மூன்றாவது, கடின உழைப்பு . நான்காவது, விடாமுயற்சி. அதாவது தோல்வி மனப்பான்மையை தோல்வியடையும்படி தொடர்ந்து முயற்சிப்பது. இந்த நான்கையும் கடைபிடித்தால் வாழ்க்கையில் நிச்சயம் வெற்றிபெறமுடியும். இது குறித்து என் கவிதை ஒன்றை உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். நீங்கள் அதைத் திரும்பச் சொல்லுங்கள்...

வெற்றி என்பது ஒன்றின் இறுதிப்புள்ளி, தோல்வி என்பது இடைப்புள்ளி. இடைப்புள்ளிகளின் துணையின்றி இறுதிப்புள்ளியை அடைதல் சாத்தியமல்ல. வெற்றியைக் கொண்டாடத் தவறினாலும் தோல்வியைக் கொண்டாடத் தவறக்கூடாது. ஏனென்றால் தோல்விகள்தான் நம்மை வலுப்பெறச் செய்பவை. அதுதான் நம் பயணத்தை முழுமை பெறச் செய்பவை. பெற்றோர்கள் மற்றும் ஆசிரியர்கள் தங்கள் பிள்ளைகளைப் பாராட்டும் சந்தரப்பங்கள் வந்தால் பரிசாக புத்தகத்தை தாருங்கள். பள்ளி வயதிலேயே புத்தகங்களை வாசிக்கும் பழக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்துங்கள்.

Indian amateur golfer Diksha Dagar credits dad for her silver win at Deaflympics

Diksha Dagar might not be able to hear the sound when her golf club hits the ball, but striking hole-in-one lights up her face like nothing else. At the age of 16, the Indian golfer has made the country proud by winning a silver medal at the ongoing Deaflympics (Deaf Olympics; on till July 30) in Turkey.

Diksha is among the 46 sportspersons participating in the games at Samsun. This is the first time that golf is a part of Deaflympics. And, behind Diksha’s victory is an extraordinary tale of courage and commitment.

“I have been learning golf since the age of six. I love to play the sport, but no one was ready to provide coaching to me. So, my dad became my coach and my strength,” says Diksha, who, along with her brother Yogesh, who is also hearing-impaired, started accompanying her father, Col Narinder Dagar, to the golf course.

“It wasn’t easy... My father also had a job to take care of, and I could not have played alone, so he coached my brother, too,” adds Diksha. The siblings didn’t play with the other children, but used their common disability to spend time together playing golf. “Being differently-abled, I hardly had any friends. Besides my family, golf is my life,” says the Delhi-based girl.

It’s not just her father whom Diksha credits for her achievements, but also the Indian Army. “Golf is an expensive sport. Being an army [person’s] daughter helped me, as The Indian Army supported me. My family made sacrifices. At times, it was tough to chase my passion but I still did it... I got the opportunity to play at the Deaf Olympics, and to represent my country. I want to thank my father and the Indian Army for this,” she says.

Deaflympics 2017: India turn the tide after a week; win 3 medals to produce best-ever performance

India's deaf players produced their best in the ongoing Deaflympics at Samsun in Turkey and it is what the officials had predicted before the start of the tournament.

Till the end of the first week, there was no ray of hope. But on the eighth day, India's golden Deaflympians made the country immensely proud by bagging one gold and two bronzes to jump to the nineteenth place in the medals' tally. Russia were leading the table with 123 medals, including 56 golds, and look certain to maintain their lead for the remaining five days of the competition. Ukraine were a distant second with 60 medals.

India's performance at the 13th Deaflympics being held between July 1 and 30 at Samsun in Turkey is their best ever. India had won their first-ever medal at the Olympics for the deaf and mute in Melbourne in 2005 when Virender Singh grabbed a gold. In the 2009 edition held in Taipei, India settled for a bronze and it was Singh again who had brought his country a gold in the 2013 edition held in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The result in 2017, however, eclipsed the past and it was precisely what Ketan Shah, project officer and interpreter at All India Sports Council for the Deaf (AISCD), had predicted. This IBT correspondent met him at the New Delhi airport on July 16, when he was about to take off for Turkey with a team of around 50 players, all young and exuberant about the big show.

"The current government has taken a bigger interest in promoting the players for Deaflympics compared to the previous one. The preparation camps have been more rigorous this time and we have picked the best," Shah said. He also used the occasion to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's interest in sports. He mentioned the mega sporting event called Khel Mahakumbh which Modi had organised during his days of chief ministership in Gujarat, saying such events really help in nurturing sportsmen on a large scale.

Shah also introduced with some of the coaches and mentors who were with the contingent, some of whom have won awards as well. "It is not easy to train these players for besides the technical training, one also has to communicate with them on the right note. But our coaches have done the job remarkably well," Shah added.

'The challenged sportsmen do not have an easy life'

However, a better preparation doesn't mean that the deaf sportsmen are leading rosy lives. "Most of these players come from poor and moderate backgrounds. Besides, there is bad infrastructure and as I said, the problem of interpretation. These are real challenges on the way of their moving up," another AISCD official said.

Shah was also disappointed with the nature of coverage events like Deafylimpics get in the media. "I am sorry to say but the media is not much interested to give much coverage to these players and their hard work," Shah said.

'I don't consider cricket a sport'

The mention of cricket, the most followed game in India, became inevitable at this point of the discussion. "Cricket gets so much coverage but not much for others. I do not even consider cricket as a sport," said a dejected VK Agarwal, the Deafylimpics team's table tennis coach.

India are taking part in eight disciplines in the Samsun edition and it features a total of 114 countries. We sincerely hope that the Indian players add more to their tally and make their countrymen proud.

City youth to represent country in Vietnam

City youth Yashvir Goyal (17) has won first position in the hearing impaired category of the National IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities. He is all set to represent the country in Vietnam.

He has won the competition, which was organised by the National Institute of Technology (NIT). It was held on July 20-21 at Kurukshetra in Haryana.

Yashvir Goyal is the only one who has been selected from Punjab to represent the country at an international event called Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities.

He has been suffering from hearing impairment since birth and he cannot speak.

While talking to Bathinda Tribune, Yashvir said he was elated on winning the competition and is eagerly waiting to participate in Vietnam.

He said total four candidates from across the country had been selected to represent India.

At the national level, the contest involved e-designing, use of e-tools and creativity challenge, he added.

Yashvir is the son of former state information commissioner Chander Parkash.

Students of deaf and mute school to be shifted to other schools

Coimbatore: Following a petition from parents, the Coimbatore district collector TN Hariharan on Monday directed the transfer of students from Tirupur Deaf School to Government Deaf and Mute School and Infant Jesus School for Deaf here. The order comes after the correspondent of Tirupur Deaf School was arrested in May this year for sexually harassing girl students of the school.

In May, the Karumathampatty police arrested correspondent of Tirupur Deaf School, K Murugasamy, 57, one of the trustees of the school M Chitradevi, 40, warden of the school S Parimala, 28, a worker of a lathe shop A Babu, 35, and his wife B Revathi, 30. Later, the office-in-charge C Rani was arrested.

A widower, Murugasamy himself is a deaf and mute. According to the petition filed by a parent, Arun Gandhi, Murugasamy had sexually harassed 18 girl students of the school. He had been running the school for the past nine years.

There were 195 students in the school, according to the police complaint. In the complaint, it was alleged that two students were sexually harassed by Murugasamy and others in 2012 and 2013. One of the complainants said Murugasamy forced her to have alcohol and raped her after which she became pregnant. Following this, Chitradevi, Rani and Parimala took her to a private hospital and aborted her child. Murugasamy was running similar schools in Sulur and Kangeyam.

திருப்பூர் மாவட்டங்களில் காதுகேளாத, வாய்பேசாத முடியாத மாற்றுத்திறனாளி மாணவர்களுக்கு 3 இடங்களில் சிறப்பு பள்ளி நடத்தி வருபவர் முருகசாமி. மாற்றுத்திறனாளியான இவர் நடத்தும் மாற்றுத்திறனாளி மாணவர்களுக்கான பள்ளியில் 200 க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் படித்து வருகின்றனர். இந்நிலையில் பள்ளியில் படிக்கும் 13 வயது சிறுமியை பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்ததுடன், கர்ப்பமடைந்த அந்தச் சிறுமியை பொள்ளாச்சி அழைத்து சென்று தனியார் மருத்துவமனையில் ஊழியர்கள் உதவியுடன் கருவை கலைத்தாக கூறப்படுகிறது.

இந்தப் புகாரில் பள்ளி நிறுவனர் முருகசாமி உள்ளிட்ட நிர்வாகிகள் கடந்த மாதம் கைது செய்யப்பட்டு சிறையிலடைக்கப்பட்டனர். அதனால், பள்ளியின் அங்கீகாரத்தை மாநில மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் துறை ஆணையர் ரத்து செய்தார். இதனைத் தொடர்ந்து தாங்கள் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக அந்த பள்ளியில் பயின்று வந்த மாற்றுத்திறனாளி மாணவர்கள் தொடர் போராட்டங்களில் ஈடுபட்டு வந்தனர். இந்த நிலையில், சம்பந்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்களை கோவை மாநகராட்சி காதுகேளாதோர் பள்ளி மற்றும் இன்பேன்ட் ஜீசஸ் பள்ளியில் சேர்க்க கோவை மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் ஹரிஹரன் உத்தரவு பிறப்பித்துள்ளார்.

Cochlear implants at IGIMS by August-end

24.07.2017, PATNA: Prelingual deaf children from below poverty line families will soon be able to receive cochlear implants at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) with the help of the state government. A prelingual deaf individual is someone who was born with a hearing loss or whose hearing loss occurred before they began to speak.

The state government has agreed to provide Rs6.5 lakh for cochlear implants for children from BPL families or whose parent's annual income is less than Rs2 lakh.

"Our ear, nose and throat (ENT) department is ready with all the facilities for the implants. We have already selected three patients for the implants. Around 25 other patients are on the waiting list. The operations will begin from last week of August or first week of September," said HoD of IGIMS ENT department, Dr Rakesh Kumar Singh.

He said all the pre and post-operation procedures would be carried out at IGIMS. "The patient will not have to go anywhere else. We will carry out aural rehabilitation, audiology assessment, audio-verbal rehabilitation, check for any anomalies and brain status as per the guidelines followed post-operation," he said.

Dr Kumar said the cochlear device alone costs Rs4.65 lakh. Rest of the money will cover other expenses of the operation, rehabilitation therapies and medicines.

IGIMS is carrying out the procedures in collaboration with AIIMS Delhi. "Prof Rakesh Kumar from the otorhinolaryngology department of AIIMS Delhi has been appointed as a visiting professor at IGIMS and would provide assistance when required," said Dr Kumar.

New app to help users locate disabled-friendly places in India

New Delhi: In a first, a Delhi-based start- up has launched a new smartphone app that can help people with special needs to find disabled-friendly restaurants, tourist locations and other public places across India.

The app, called BillionAbles, is India’s first lifestyle app for persons with disabilities and special needs, according to its founder Sameer Garg.

Garg, 42, was left with paralysed lower limbs after he suffered a spinal cord injury at the age of 19. “Over the years, I have struggled to find an inclusive environment—whether it is workplace or public place,” Garg told PTI.

“Currently, in India, no centralised online platform provides information about accessibility of places or services,” he said.

People with disabilities have to search for each and every service through referrals or search engines. They then need to confirm the accessibility of the place through phone calls or e-mails.

“Even after that, sometimes the information provided is not accurate as communicated,” Garg said.

“Currently, lot of organisations are working in India which provide skill-based training, conduct accessible tours, run accessible cabs, and provide facilities like ramps and washrooms, but this information is not compiled and listed anywhere,” he said.

The app was conceptualised by Garg and developed by co- founder Deepak Kumar, 24, who is a student of engineering at Kurukshetra University in Haryana.

It lists accessible venues and services under various categories including restaurants, hotels, malls, wellness centres, events and parking spaces. The user can filter the search results on the basis of features such as step-free access, braille and sign language availability, gluten-free food and eating aids.

The results open up in list as well as map view. The app is accessible for persons with varied disabilities. For instance, visually impaired people can use the app through its ‘text to speech’ and ‘speech to text’ feature.

The contrast or colour theme of the app can be changed for people who suffer from partial vision or colour blindness. All videos uploaded will be communicated in sign language, as well as sub titles for ease to deaf people.

Smart dictionary feature is provided for users with limited mobility in their hands, Garg said. The app is supported by a crowd-sourced platform which enables any user to add new places or services.

The listings are open for ratings and reviews by other users. The BillionAbles team also conducts verification of the listings on the app by conducting access audits in a phase wise manner.

“Currently, we have over 150 verified listings from Delhi NCR, Goa and Rajasthan,” Garg said. The team will also conduct regular ‘AccessHunt’ events, the first of which is scheduled to take place on 30 July at Connaught Place in New Delhi.

During the event, volunteers will break out in groups to map accessibility at various venues and upload the places and services that they have found. The app was released on Google Play store earlier this month and is available free of cost.

SOHUM, a diagnostic device to check babies for hearing problems, isnon-invasive and cost-effective

Inspiration gripped engineer-cum-industrial designer Nitin Sisodia while observing the goings-on in a noisy clinic at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). A parent walked in, he recalled, complaining that his son couldn’t speak. The attending doctor explained it was because the child was deaf and that it was too late to do anything about it. “That shook me up and prompted me to ask if there was a possible solution,” he said at press meet.

Ten years on, Mr. Sisodia doesn’t have a way to cure deafness but has made a diagnostic device to check if babies as young as three months may have a hearing problem. The device, comprising a headset connected to an iPad-like monitor, can be used as preliminary tool to check for early signs of deafness.

The SOHUM test

Globally, 8,00,000 hearing-impaired babies are born annually, nearly 1,00,000 in India. SOHUM, as Mr. Sisodia’s device is called, hopes to screen 2% of hospital-born babies in the first year, before scaling up.

Though a variety of tests exist to determine deafness, the latest (and most reliable) one for newborns is the so-called auditory brainstem response (ABR) test which involves placing electrodes on a baby’s forehead and ears and sending an electronic “click”. The brain’s response, in the form of electrical waves, provides information on the time it takes for structures of the auditory pathway to respond and thus can be used to identify an underlying hearing problem. However, a drawback of using an ABR is that it needs to be done in an extremely quiet room.

Mr. Sisodia’s system, which he developed as part of a fellowship at the Stanford Biodesign programme, claims to eliminate the latter requirement. “We have made a novel algorithm that can extract the relevant signal even in noisy surroundings,” he told The Hindu , “Because that’s how most hospital settings in our country are. Also, it doesn’t require a highly-skilled expert to perform the test.”

Results from the test are available immediately as a PASS or REFER. The latter means that the child needs to go in for further tests with audiologists to confirm the diagnosis and begin remedial measures such as a cochlear implant or appropriate hearing aids.

Sisodia, who is the founder and CEO of SOHUM Innovation Lab, said that he was funded by the Department of Biotechnology, and in talks with the Health Ministry to be able to use the device in a primary health-care settings.

Efficient, cheaper

The battery-operated device is non-invasive, which means babies do not need to be sedated, which is necessary in the current, and “risky”, testing in process at present.

SOHUM has so far been tested in six hospitals across the country and costs about Rs. 6 lakh. Mr. Sisodia claims this is about a third of what the best-in-class imported ABR systems cost. The testing cost is also between Rs. 600 and Rs. 1,200. “In contrast, a few private hospitals offer the tests at a price of Rs. 4,000 for every test,” he noted.

Dr. A. Thakar of the ENT department at AIIMS said Mr. Sisodia’s device was a novel breakthrough and necessary to break the monopoly of imported devices. “Companies charge high simply because they can... SOHUM is a viable effective challenge to them,” he added.

Disabled lad wins national IT challenge

BATHINDA: Yashvir Goyal (17), a youth with speech and hearing impairment from Bathinda has won the national informational technology challenge for youth with disabilities. Yashvir (17) will now represent the country at the global IT challenge for youth with disabilities in Vietnam in September.

The national competition was held at the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra on Friday where disabled youths from 15 states of India participated. Despite his disabilities, Yashvir has been studying with students in a normal school. He got a gold medal in the category of the hearing impaired.

Yashvir's father Chander Prakash, also a former state information commissioner of Punjab, said he got 86% in class X and 91.3% in class XII. "He is now doing graduation in social sciences," said Chander.

He said only 72 youths were selected to take part in the competition and the jury of eight judges selected four disabled youths, including Yashvir, the sole representative from Punjab to represent the country. He certainly has done the state proud.

The Iran men's national deaf volleyball team has upset the United States to achieve its first victory at the 23rd edition of Summer Deaflympics in Turkey.

On Wednesday evening, the Iranian squad defeated the American team 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-16 and 25-21) at the end of a match played in Turkey’s northern and major Black Sea port city of Samsun.

The Iran men's national deaf volleyball team will take on Poland in its second fixture on Friday.

The 2017 Summer Deaflympics, officially known as the 23rd edition of Summer Deaflympics, opened in Samsun, Turkey, on July 18 and will finish on July 30, 2017. A total of 3,148 athletes from 97 countries are competing in 21 sports at the international multi-sport event.

Dozens of Iranian athletes are in action across 13 sports. They are vying for top honors in athletics, beach volleyball, bowling, football, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.

Meet 'The Language of Glove', a smart glove that can translate sign language

Scientists have created a low- cost smart glove that can wirelessly translate sign language into text and control objects in virtual reality games.

The device, called "The Language of Glove," was built for less than USD 100 using stretchable and printable electronics that are inexpensive, commercially available and easy to assemble.

"Gesture recognition is just one demonstration of this glove's capabilities," said Timothy O'Connor, a PhD student at the University of California San Diego. "Our ultimate goal is to make this a smart glove that in the future will allow people to use their hands in virtual reality, which is much more intuitive than using a joystick and other existing controllers," said O'Connor.

"This could be better for games and entertainment, but more importantly for virtual training procedures in medicine, for example, where it would be advantageous to actually simulate the use of one's hands," he said. The glove is unique in that it has sensors made from stretchable materials, is inexpensive and simple to manufacture.

"We've innovated a low-cost and straightforward design for smart wearable devices using off-the-shelf components," said Darren Lipomi, a professor at UC San Diego. "Our work could enable other researchers to develop similar technologies without requiring costly materials or complex fabrication methods," said Lipomi, senior author of the study published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The team built the device using a leather athletic glove and adhered nine stretchable sensors to the back at the knuckles - two on each finger and one on the thumb.

The sensors are made of thin strips of a silicon-based polymer coated with a conductive carbon paint. The sensors are secured onto the glove with copper tape. Stainless steel thread connects each of the sensors to a low power, custom-made printed circuit board that's attached to the back of the wrist. The sensors change their electrical resistance when stretched or bent. This allows them to code for different letters of the American Sign Language alphabet based on the positions of all nine knuckles.

A straight or relaxed knuckle is encoded as "0" and a bent knuckle is encoded as "1." When signing a particular letter, the glove creates a nine-digit binary key that translates into that letter.

For example, the code for the letter "A" (thumb straight, all other fingers curled) is "011111111," while the code for "B" (thumb bent, all other fingers straight) is "100000000." The low power printed circuit board on the glove converts the nine-digit key into a letter and then transmits the signals via Bluetooth to a smartphone or computer screen.

The glove can wirelessly translate all 26 letters of the American Sign Language alphabet into text. Researchers also used the glove to control a virtual hand to sign letters in the American Sign Language alphabet.

Punekars, Gauravi Wamburkar and Priyesha Deshmukh, to represent India at Deaflympics

What’s the story?

Gauravi Wamburkar and Priyesha Deshmukh are all set to represent India at the prestigious 23rd Summer Deaflympics that commenced last Tuesday in Samsun, Turkey.

The context

The 23rd edition of the Deaflympics, which is an International Olympic Committee (IOC)-sanctioned event held every four years, allows athletes with hearing impairments to compete at an elite level. Dating back to 1924, this is one of the most inclusive and celebrated events in Olympic history.

Both the girls, hailing from Pune, made a visible mark in their respective disciplines at the national level, leading to qualification for this renowned event.

The heart of the matter

20-year-old Gauravi is ranked No. 2 in India currently

Gauravi had returned to training at the Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy (NKBA) in Balewadi, run by the Olympian himself, after a two-year hiatus due to a knee injury.

In April, she bagged two golds (women’s doubles and mixed doubles) and a silver medal at the 21st National Games for the Deaf that was held in Chennai and subsequently qualified for the international event.

During her last stint, at the 22nd Summer Deaflympics held in Sofia, Bulgaria in 2013, she made it all the way to the quarterfinals.

23-year-old Priyesha, meanwhile, scored a remarkable 180.4 in the 10m air rifle category at the 1st World Deaf Shooting Championships in Kazan, Russia held last September, where she went on to place third and bag a bronze medal for the country. A relative newbie in the sport, this achievement only adds to her list of national accolades.

Coached by international shooter Anjali Bhagwat, Priyesha has constantly moved forward despite her disabilities. Along with hearing-impairments, she also has Dyslexia and Dyscalculia, but has been persistent in her efforts despite receiving no assistance from the All India Sports Council of the Deaf (AISCD).

Bhagwat, who trains Priyesha at the Balewadi shooting ranges, feels that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) have been of immense help. Priyesha’s father, who has raised her single-handedly after his wife passed away, has been incredibly supportive as well.

During her qualifiers, Priyesha scored a 414 which is at par with any international shooter.

What’s next?
While both contestants are undergoing rigorous preparation for their respective events, they are slated to perform on the international stage in the coming weeks.
