Prithvi Sekhar continued to play his part well but the Indian team got beaten 2-1 by Britain as doubles proved decisive in the league phase of the Deaf World Championship tennis on Monday.
Prithvi outplayed Lewis Fletcher for the loss of two games to keep India in the hunt after D.H. Prashanth lost the first singles. But, the doubles pair of Prithvi and Prashant lost to Esah Hayat and Lewis Fletcher to hand Britain the match.
In the women’s league phase, India was outplayed by France in the singles, as Bhavani Kedia and Jafreen Shaik managed to win a token game each. In doubles the two girls combined well to stretch the match into three sets, before Aurele Coudon and Lucie Boulestreau won.
The results (league): Men: Britain bt India 2-1 (Esah Hayat bt D.H. Prashanth 6-2, 6-0; Lewis Fletcher lost to Prithvi Sekhar 0-6, 2-6; Esah Hayat & Lewis Fletcher bt Prithvi & Prashanth 3-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Women: France bt India 3-0 (Marine Beney bt Bhavani Kedia 6-0, 6-1; Aurelie Coudon bt Jafreen Shaikh 6-0, 6-1; Aurelie & Lucie Boulestreau bt Bhavani & Jafreen 5-7, 6-0, 6-2).
