KANPUR: A 26-year-old pregnant rape survivor, who was speech and hearing impaired, died during treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital in Kanpur on Wednesday morning. The woman was gang-raped by two villagers on Sunday evening in Hamirpur district after being administered contraceptive pills. The accused had raped her earlier also resulting in her pregnancy.
The police, on the basis of a complaint, had registered a case of gang rape. On Wednesday, after the woman's death, both the suspects were taken into custody. The woman was staying at her parents' home after a disagreement with her in-laws when she came became acquainted with the suspects of the same village. The accused raped her, which resulted in her pregnancy. The family claimed that they had warned both men several times and advised them to stay away from the woman.
According to the woman's family, on Sunday, while she was alone at home, the two accused lured her to nearby fields and gave her contraceptive pills. They then took turns raping her. When the family found out, they confronted one of the accused, who responded with abuse and threats. As the woman's condition worsened, she was taken to the hospital on Monday from where she was referred to LLR hospital in Kanpur.
Circle Officer Sadar Rajesh Kamal stated that based on the victim's father's complaint, an FIR was registered, and both the accused were detained. Their interrogation is underway. "The body has been sent for postmortem and investigations are on," he added.
