06.09.2016, Tinsukia: A deaf, mute & mentally challenged girl was beaten up out of sheer misunderstanding in Assam's Tinsukia. The girl was tied up and beaten by the locals after she was seen walking around in a locality.
The villagers assaulted her and later she was tied to a poll and stripped by the women of the locality.
The villagers suspected she was a baby-stealer and their suspicion stemmed from the scare in the area for the last month and a half. Over 30 villages in the area have reported incidents of unidentified miscreants entering the house in the middle of the night and attacking people with knives.
The mentally challenged girl was also believed to have entered a few houses late in the night. Being deaf and mute, she was unable to respond to the queries of the locals and was then mistaken to be a baby-stealer.
The woman was rescued by the police and 2 people have been arrested till now.
