05.09.2016, Jamshedpur's La Gravitea is famous for its 105 international varieties of tea, but what is of note are the the people who brew it.
It has recently hired 7 deaf and mute women, many of whom are formally acclaimed athletic champions. Guruveer Kaur is a Badminton Gold-medalist (Special Olympics, 2015), while Suggi is an award winning national athlete.
Despite their accomplishments in the field of sports, these women were previously unemployed and were on hunt for a job
Avinash Duggar told Hindustan Times that he was inspired to give these real life stars a new life after he met one of them at his tea kiosk, even before he started a lounge. The encounter with the deaf and mute girl persuaded him to develop this unique and inclusive business model. Speaking through sign language, the staff expressed their joy at this acceptance.
Special Olympics triple medal winner Guruveer expressed regret at how the achievements of special athletes are overlooked
"Our struggle to win laurels for the country is no less challenging than our normal counterparts but one can see the disparity in the treatment meted out to us," she said. Suggi Kumari has won 50 medals, and echoes the same sentiments.
La Gravitea is soon setting up cafes at the Ranchi airport and railway station to employ differently-abled girls.
