JAIPUR: To make district hospitals friendlier for speech and hearing impaired people, the health department will train at least one doctor to provide effective treatment to such patients in the hospital.
Health minister Kalicharan Saraf said that patients coming to district hosptials with speech and hearing issues found it difficult to communicate their health problems.
At a meeting held with health officials, Saraf said that each district hospital in the state to have a trained doctor.
He directed officials to identify doctors with the help of chief medical health officers and asked principal medical officers to take followup action.
Saraf said that if a doctor understands sign language of people with speech and hearing impairment, he would be able to understand his health problems in a better way .
He directed officials to take necessary steps to bring down the percentage of population with visual impair ment. At present, the prevalence of blindness is 1% among the population. But it should be reduced to 0.34% by 2020, Saraf said.
The health department should set a target to hold three lakh camps for cataract operations.
He asked officials to monitor the availability of medicines in 17,751 drug distribution counters (DDCs), in and directed them to ensure availability of medicines at these counters.
The government has sanctioned Rs 380 crore for the purpose under the free medicine scheme and Rs 105 crore for free diagnostic test scheme.
Besides, he directed officials to take steps to fill vacant posts of doctors and paramedical staff in government hospitals.
