The painting exhibition on display at Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan communicated volumes of artistic expressions by two city-based hearing impaired artists, Mohan Varma and R Jayaprakash. The duo has overcome their speech and hearing disabilities and exhibited their first major exhibition titled Shades of Silence under the aegis of a city-based online news channel for the deaf. About 60 paintings made using acrylic, oil and watercolour were on display, ranging from nature's landscapes to portraits of Mother Teresa. The well-finished art works on display reflected the determination of the artists over their disabilities. While 73-year-old Mohan Varma is a retired employee of Kerala Bhasha Institute, Jayaprakash is a 43-year-old art teacher at a government school. The duo had won state awards for the most efficient differently-abled employees in 1995 and 1996 respectively. The exhibition also featured 10 works in paper collage by Mohan, each highly impressive with minute details. Art-enthusiasts in the city had a great time interpreting the unconventional works of art.
