The Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped (VRC) is conducting a 45-day long communication and computer skills programme for class XII students with hearing difficulties. With this workshop, the centre also aims to help students from Tamil medium to make the transition to college. The programme is being organised in conjunction with NGOs like LC Project, and Dr MGR Home and Higher Secondary School for Speech and Hearing Impaired. As part of it, Tamil medium students will be taught the necessary English communication and computer skills.
The inauguration of the summer course saw Kaithamalai, director of the Advanced Technical Institute, Ministry of Employment and Training, Goverment of India, addressing the gathering of students. He said that it was essential for the students to pick up communication skills at an early stage, to progress in life. The VRC not only provides vocational training but also looks to integrate the differently-abled students with industry. “This year (June 2014- April 2015), out of the 1,400 students who took part in various programmes, 900 have been placed in companies with Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). AGS, TCS and Flextronics are the major hirers this year,” said Thangaraj, deputy director, Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped. The VRC conducts training programme in metal welding, carpentry, computer education, secretarial practice, electronics servicing, tailoring and cutting, domestic appliance repair, photography and tricycle assembly. All these skills are taught as part of the different courses for the differently-abled, at the institute. Most of the programmes are sponsored by the Central Government, with help provided by NGOs throughout the year, he added. For more details, call 044-22501534.
