Deaf and mute students of a state-run school demanded on Monday that classes be conducted in one shift and the principal be replaced as she does not understand their sign language.

The students of Seth Anandilal Poddar senior secondary school on JLN Road here protested against two shifts, holding placards stating ‘We want those who understand our language.’

After the protest, additional district education officer Ashok Sharma said the school would revert to one-shift-a-day arrangement from August 1.

The education department constituted a six-member committee that will report on improvements required in the school.

The committee, comprising the assistant district education officer (education cell), school secretary, two parents and two students, will submit the report in three days. Till then the principal has been relieved from duty.

“We have also banned use of mobile phones in classrooms by both students and teachers; every fortnight the education officer will hold inspection of the school,” Sharma said.

The organisation of the students’ parents – Anubhav Mook Shakti Abhibhavak Sanstha –submitted a memorandum to education minister Vasudev Devanani, supporting the demands.

“It is difficult for students to attend classes in two shifts as they are coming from as far as 10-60km. The parents’ body was not consulted before the arrangement was changed,” said Abhibhavak Sanstha secretary Yogendra Kumar Joshi.

“A majority of teachers in the school are not trained to teach these special students. The principal should be replaced as she does not understand the students’ sign language.”

Guwahati: Around 150 hearing-impaired youths, under the banner of the Assam Association of the Deaf, staged a protest on Saturday against the sexual assault on an 11-year-old hearing-impaired girl of Chennai for seven months.

The protest was organised at Lakshidhar Bora Khetra here from 11am to 1.30pm.

The protesters displayed placards carrying the slogan "no more rape, save girls, save nation".

The organisation's general secretary Tapan Kumar Sarma said, "Everyone, deaf or otherwise, should condemn this barbaric incident. Such an incident happened in an institution in Lankeswar here and the girl was forced to commit suicide. She was sexually abused for seven months since January.

Twenty-three persons have been arrested since the matter came to light on July 22. We demand strict punishment of the guilty.

"The deaf and mute people are easy prey to the criminal-minded as they cannot communicate with the rest of society. Not everyone knows sign language. Society should protect these vulnerable people. We appeal to the government to provide adequate protection to disabled girls," he added.

மத்திய பிரதேச மாநிலம் டிகம் நகரை சேர்ந்தவர் தேஷ்னா ஜெயின். இவர் காதுகேளாதோருக்கான மிஸ் இந்தியா பட்டம் வென்றிருக்கிறார். பின்னர் தைவான் நாட்டில் 2016ம் ஆண்டு நடைபெற்ற காதுகேளாதோருக்கான 'மிஸ் இண்டர்நேஷனல்' போட்டியில் மூன்றாம் இடம் பிடித்தார்.

One in eight kids may have neuro disorders in India

NEW DELHI: Almost one in eight Indian children between the ages of 2 to 9 years, may have at least one neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) such as epilepsy, speech and language disorders and intellectual disability, an assessment of children from across the country has found.

There are, however, few standards for the disorders and still fewer treatments available. The study, conducted by Narendra K Arora of the INCLEN Trust International, New Delhi, and 50 other colleagues, has assessed about 4,000 children, perceived as ‘normal’, at Palwal (Haryana), Kangra (Himachal Pradesh), Dhenkanal (Odisha), north Goa and Hyderabad and tested them for vision impairment, epilepsy, neuromotor impairments including cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, speech and language disorders, and intellectual disability. Older children were also tested for attention deficit hyperactivity and learning disorders.

The analysis, which found that 475 of 3,964 children had at least one NDD. Among children with such disorders, 21.7 per cent had two or more disorders. Children with autism spectrum disorder, neuromotor impairments and epilepsy most frequently had other coexisting disorders. Prevalence of NDD varied according to site, from roughly 5 per cent (Dhenkanal) to roughly 19 per cent (Palwal), with hearing impairment and intellectual disorders.

Social Justice Department to conduct art and sports meet for differently challenged

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Social Justice Department is planning to conduct a state-level art and sports meet in order to identify the hidden talents among the differently challenged community.

According to the department, the meet will be similar to that of the ‘Keralotsavam’ event organized jointly by the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board and Local Self Government Department. “The state-meet which we were planning to conduct at Thiruvananthapuram will be attended by winners in the district-level competitions. The tentative month for conducting the event in September/October/November,” said a statement from the Social Justice Minister’s office. A task force with Social Justice Director, Director of Public Instruction, representatives from Health Department, Sports and Youth Affairs Department and others have also been formed in this regard.

The intellectually challenged, those suffering from hearing impairment, visual impairment and locomotor disability will be allowed to participate in the meet.“The participants will be categorized under four age categories- 8 to 11, 12 to 17, 18 to 21 and 22 to 55. The participants have to register via an online registration platform set up by CDIT,” said an officer with the Social Justice Department.

KOCHI: This 30-year-old is hearing impaired and has cerebral palsy, but these disabilities have not pulled him down. Instead, through sheer will Anjan Satish today has become a well-known face in the art circle. His skill and talent with the brush have won him many accolades including the Cavinkare Ability Award.
According to Anjan’s father Satish, his son took up the brush at the tender age of five. “He used to play with colours and began drawing at six. He has not received any training in doing caricature or paintings. It comes naturally to him,” he said.

Recognising his innate talent in drawing caricatures and cartoons, Anjan was made the honorary member of the Kerala Cartoon Academy. “He was also named the icon of the academy in 2015. This is a first in the history of the academy,” said Anjan’s father.

Anjan did his schooling at the Adarsh Special School. “He also learnt 3D animation at Toonz Academy,” said Satish. “He is, at present, teaching computer and art at his former alma mater.” According to Satish, the students at the school are able to easily connect with him.

“They find it easy to communicate with him and Anjan also enjoys being there. He has been teaching at the school for the past eight years,” he said.

He won a national award for Outstanding Creative Adult with Disabilities, instituted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. His other achievements include awards like Amrita Keerthy Puraskaaram (Amritanandamayi Math) at the age of eight, Rotary International Special Talent Award (2001) and the Medal in Art at the National Abylimpics, Chennai (2005).

He has held many exhibitions all over the country. He organised an exhibition of his work at Kerala High Court in 2009, becoming the first artist to hold an exhibition inside the High Court and to get a full court honour.

“As of now, we have not put up his creations for sale. Of course, we have sold a few of his creations. But only if somebody approaches us showing interest in buying one of his caricature or cartoon works,” said Satish. What Anjan loves the most is to draw cartoons and upload them on Facebook.

Anjan writes in his blog, “disability cannot defeat me ..straining to reach there for which I am made for..aiming to become a legend with which what I have in me ...I do not know where I will reach ...what I am made for...” Surely, this young man has defeated disability.

Amazon's Echo Show makes Alexa more accessible to the deaf and speech-impaired

Live today, Amazon's new "Tap to Alexa" feature lets hearing- and speech-impaired users trigger common Alexa tricks with a few taps on the screen, no conversation needed.

Smart speakers like the Amazon Echo have brought voice controls into millions of homes -- but what if you can't hear what Alexa has to say? What if it's difficult or impossible for you to talk to her in the first place?

Starting today, Amazon has an answer to those questions. It's called "Tap to Alexa," and just as it sounds, it lets owners of the Echo Show touchscreen smart speakertap on the screen to access customizable shortcuts to common Alexa tricks, including weather, news headlines, timers and more. Users can rearrange those shortcuts as they see fit, or swap them out for other shortcuts based on how they'd like to put Alexa to use. There's also a new keyboard icon -- tap on it, and you'll be able to type out a specific Alexa command with no need to talk at all.

Even better: Amazon tells me that you'll be able to add shortcut buttons that can trigger Alexa Routines, too. Arguably one of Alexa's best features, Routines are custom Alexa commands that can trigger multiple actions at once. For instance, saying "Alexa, lock down," could lock your smart locks, close your smart blinds and turn on your home's smart lights all at once. With Tap to Alexa, you'll now be able to trigger those same Routines by tapping a button on the Show's screen. That's a nice accessibility upgrade for the speech impaired, and something that the wider Alexa user base might want to make use of, too.
To turn Tap to Alexa on, just navigate to the updated "Accessibility" section of the Echo Show settings menu and toggle it on. While there, you can also enable transcripts for any incoming voice messages, as well as on-screen captions for everything Alexa says.

One other note: Starting today, that Alexa captioning feature, which has been available in the US for a few months, will make its debut in the UK, Germany, Japan, India, France, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as well.

For now, Tap to Alexa is exclusive to the Echo Show, but an Amazon spokesperson tells me that the company is working to bring it to the smaller-sized Echo Spot, too. There's no timetable for that, though, and no word yet on whether or not the feature will also come to always-on Fire tablets docked in Show Mode.

I also wonder if we'll see those Alexa shortcut buttons on our smart phones at some point. For instance, it'd be nice to have the option of adding them to the Alexa widget on Android phones that already lets you tap to talk from the home screen. There isn't an Alexa widget for iOS devices yet, but adding one with shortcut buttons included would essentially match Apple HomeKit's control center shortcuts, which let you trigger favorite devices and scenes with a swipe and a tap from the homescreen.

For now, Amazon admits that Tap to Alexa's appeal is limited to a small subset of the Echo Show user base, and some might scoff that it essentially turns the Show into an over-sized, over-priced Fire tablet. But as an added layer of accessibility and common sense convenience that makes good use of the Show's most distinctive feature -- its screen -- Tap to Alexa seems like a welcome addition for those who might put it to use.

12-yr-old deaf, mute girl raped in MP, reveals ordeal in sign language

Sehore: A 12-year-old deaf and mute girl was allegedly raped in Budhni tehsil of the district on Saturday, police said.

Shaliendra Chouhan (26), the accused, was arrested within hours of the incident which took place at Machhwai village, said inspector PN Yadav of Shahganj police station.

Budhni is the Assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The accused allegedly persuaded the girl to go with him to a secluded area on Sunday morning and raped her.

When the girl returned home and narrated what had happened through sign language to her parents, a complaint was lodged at Shahganj police station, inspector Yadav said.

Police soon arrested the accused and registered a case of rape under the IPC and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Further probe is on.

Meet the winner of Miss Asia Deaf 2018: Deshna Jain

Miss Universe 2018 Manushi Chillar, of course.

But did you also know there is a third beauty pageant queen who has won two international titles this year? Crowned Miss India (Deaf) 2018 in Jaipur, Deshna Jain went on to grab Miss Asia (Deaf) title and was third runner-up in the Miss International (Deaf) contest held in Taipei, Taiwan, from July 8-July 16.

But her name fails to ring a bell.

There are no TV channels queuing up for her byte and no interviews lined up to highlight the young woman's achievement in winning an international crown for India.

Aware that she would have been the talk of town had it been the win of a "normal hearing" person, Deshna has the poise of a beauty pageant winner as she recalls Miss Asia (Deaf) contest.

"I was very nervous, there were contestants participating from over 20 countries. I thought they were more beautiful, more well-dressed, and more talented than me. But luckily the judgment came in my favour and I was declared Miss Deaf Asia," Deshna told PTI in an interview conducted with the help of an interpreter.

"I wish to take part in many such events in future and make my family and country proud," she added.

Glad and humbled to be titled Miss Deaf Asia, and the third runner up Miss Deaf International. Thank you, everyone who stood with me in this journey and especially my parents who were always there to support me.

It's the first time since 2009 that an Indian has won any title in the much coveted Miss and Mister Deaf International pageants.

At 20, she is also the youngest contestant to take part in the event.

Deshna's family, from Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh, is now in the national capital to spread word about her title.

"I know my daughter is deaf. But I wonder what's wrong with normal people in our society that they are so blind to her achievements," said her mother, Divya Jain.

According to the family, not a single sponsor came forward to support her financially for the international pageant.

All expenses were paid by the family, which runs a business and spent over Rs 5 lakh for the event in Taiwan.

"We ran from pillar to post for sponsorship, but there was no response from anyone. We also met Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan twice. Forget about full sponsorship, no one came forward to sponsor even her dresses", said Deshna's cousin, Kavya Jain.

Last year, Deshna was named runner-up at Miss Antriksh, a beauty pageant in Indore, where the contestants, unlike her, were not hearing-impaired.

According to the family, other "hearing" contestants got assignments and sponsorships after the event but Deshna, who came second, was ignored, the appreciation limited to lip-service only.

Kavya, a marketing professional, said she doesn't know why people have not noticed her sister's talent.

"If it is related to her being deaf and mute, then once and for all please end this brouhaha about making India an inclusive country," she said.

Videos like "Dancing Uncle" and "Chai Pi Lo Aunty", that are breaking the internet with their idiosyncratic content -- are going viral and the people behind them are being invited on reality shows and offered brand endorsements, she said.

"People who are making a genuine effort to make India proud internationally are ignored by the media and the people alike," Kavya added.

A news website has recently uploaded a video about Deshna where she can be seen talking about herself in a fun and quirky way.

Self-pity, said Deshna, is the last thing she would like to indulge in.

Studying in Indore's Deaf Bilingual Academy, she wants to be a role-model for people of her community and is up for any challenge come what may.

"Stress is not good for skin and now since I have won the title it is important that I look presentable every time," she said.

The beauty pageant queen wanted to become a dancer, a dream she said she still nurtures.

"It was my friends. They always said, 'you are so beautiful and you should take part in the competition'.

Then the word spread and my teachers called my parents who readily agreed," Deshna said excitedly.

Her mother said she is proud of Deshna for what she has achieved without making any demands on them.

"She never troubled us with anything. In fact, she always told us 'I don't need expensive clothes or cosmetics, it is not about these things only. It is about how as a person you are, your good activities, your qualities"

"But we knew that she needs to look pretty and presentable on stage. So most of the time we would go out and shop for her when she was in college, without her knowing about it," Divya said.

Deshna has one sibling who is also deaf and mute and suffers from slow brain development.

Minor girl, hearing-and-speech impaired, raped in Madhya Pradesh village

Sehore (MP), Jul 21 (PTI) A 12-year-old deaf and mute girl was allegedly raped in Budhni tehsil of the district today, police said.

Shaliendra Chouhan (26), the accused, was arrested within hours of the incident which took place at Machhwai village, said inspector P N Yadav of Shahganj police station.

Budhni is the Assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The accused allegedly persuaded the girl to go with him to a secluded area this morning and raped her.

When the girl returned home and narrated what had happened through sign language to her parents, a complaint was lodged at Shahganj police station, inspector Yadav said.

Police soon arrested the accused and registered a case of rape under the IPC and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Further probe is on.

19.07.2018, சென்னை: அயனாவரத்தில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளி சிறுமியை பலாத்காரம் செய்ய பிரசவத்தின் போது பெண்களுக்கு கொடுக்கப்படும் வலி மரப்பு மருந்துகள் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது அம்பலாமாகியுள்ளது. சென்னையில் அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் வசித்து வந்த 11 வயது சிறுமியை 17 பேர் கொண்ட கும்பல் பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்த சம்பவம் தமிழகம் முழுவதும் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியது. காது கேளாத வாய்பேச முடியாத அந்த சிறுமியை 7 மாதங்களாக அந்த கும்பல் பலாத்காரம் செய்துள்ளது. மிகவும் கொடுமையான முறையில் சிறுமி பலாத்காரம் செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

புழல் சிறையில் அடைப்பு

சிறுமி பலாத்காரம் செய்யப்பட்ட விவகாரத்தில் நாள் தோறும் பல திடுக்கிடும் தகவல்கள் வெளியாகி அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தி வருகிறது. இந்த சம்பவத்தில் ஈடுபட்ட 17 பேரும் கைது செய்யப்பட்டு சென்னை புழல் சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டனர். அதிர்ச்சியில் போலீசார் விசாரணையின் போது குற்றவாளிகள் அடுத்தடுத்து கூறிய தகவல்கள் போலீசாரை அதிர்ச்சியடைய செய்துள்ளது. இந்த குற்ற சம்பவத்தின் முதல் குற்றவாளியான 66 வயதான ரவிகுமார் என்ற நபர் சிறுமி வசித்த அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் லிப்ட் ஆப்ரேட்டராக பணிபுரிந்தவர். இவர் இந்த வேலைக்கு வருவதற்கு முன், அதே பகுதியில் உள்ள மகப்பேறு மருத்துவமனையில் வார்டு பாயாக வேலை பார்த்துள்ளார். அதன் பின்னரே அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் லிப்ட் ஆப்ரேட்டராக சேர்ந்துள்ளார்.

பிரசவத்திற்கு பயன்படும் மருந்துகள் அங்கு வேலை பார்த்த போது பிரசவத்தின்போது பெண்களுக்கு ஏற்படும் வலிகளை குறைப்பதற்காக மருத்துவர்கள் கொடுக்கும் மருந்துகளையும் அதன் விவரங்களையும் தெரிந்து கொண்ட ரவிக்குமார், அந்த மருந்துகளையும், ஊசிகளையும் பயன்படுத்தி சிறுமியை பலாத்காரம் செய்ததாக போலீசாரிடம் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். முதுமையால் சந்தேகமில்லை தனது முதுமையால் யாருக்கும் தன் மீது சந்தேகம் வரவில்லை என்று கூறியுள்ள ரவிக்குமார் சிறுமியால் வாய் பேச முடியாது என்பதை சாதகமாக பயன்படுத்திக் கொண்டதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். பிரசவ நேரத்தில் பெண்களுக்கு கொடுக்கும் வலி மரப்பு மருந்தை கொடுத்து திட்டமிட்டு இந்த கொடுஞ் செயலில் ரவிக்குமார் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளார் . அவரிடம் நடத்தப்படும் கிடுக்கிப்பிடி விசாரணையில் பல திடுக்கிடும் தகவல்கள் வெளியாகும் என தெரிகிறது.

நாடு முழுவதும் பெண்கள், சிறுகுழந்தைகளுக்கு எதிரான பாலியல் குற்றங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரித்துக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது என்று தேசிய ஆவண காப்பக புள்ளிவிவரங்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. 2007–ல் நாடுமுழுவதும் ஒருமணி நேரத்தில் 2 கற்பழிப்பு சம்பவங்கள் நடந்தது, 2016–ல் 4 கற்பழிப்புகள் நடந்திருக்கின்றன. 2016–ல் ஓராண்டில் 38 ஆயிரத்து 947 கற்பழிப்பு சம்பவங்கள் நாட்டில் நடந்துள்ளன. இதில், பாதிக்கப்பட்ட 95 சதவீதம் பேருக்கு குற்றவாளிகள் நன்றாக தெரிந்தவர்கள். அதிலும் 29 சதவீதம்பேர் அக்கம்பக்கத்தில் உள்ளவர்கள். கடந்த சிலமாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு காஷ்மீரில் உள்ள ‘கதுவா’ என்ற கிராமத்தில், தாங்கள் வளர்த்துவரும் குதிரைகளை தேடிக்கொண்டு காட்டுக்குள் சென்ற 8 வயது சிறுமியை, 8 பேர் கொண்ட கும்பல் பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்து, கொலையும் செய்த சம்பவம் கண்களில் கண்ணீரை வரவழைத்தது என்றால், சென்னையில் 7–வது வகுப்பு படிக்கும் 11 வயது செவித்திறன் குறைந்த சிறுமியை அவரது அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் உள்ள ‘லிப்ட்’ ஆப்ரேட்டர்கள் தொடங்கி, 17 பேர் பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்த சம்பவம் எல்லோருடைய நெஞ்சையும் பதறவைத்தது.

இந்தக்கொடுமையில் ஈடுபட்டவர்கள் சிலர் தாத்தா வயதிற்கு சமமானவர்கள். ‘லிப்ட்’ ஆப்ரேட்டரை அந்த சிறுமி ‘தாத்தா’ என்றுதான் கூப்பிட்டு வந்திருக்கிறார். போதை ஊசி மருந்துபோட்டு, கத்தியைக்காட்டி மிரட்டி, ஒரு பாவமும் அறியாத அந்தசிறுமியை இந்த காமக்கொடூரர்கள் பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். இந்தசம்பவம் கடந்த 7 மாதங்களாக நடந்திருக்கிறது. பெண் குழந்தைகள் தனியாக வெளியே அனுப்பப்படுவதற்கே அச்சப்படும் நிலையில், ‘‘யாரைத்தான் நம்புவதோ, பேதை நெஞ்சம்’’ என்று சொல்லும் அளவிற்கு தெரிந்தவர்கள்தான் இந்த செயலை அரங்கேற்றியிருக்கிறார்கள். குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டவர்களுக்கு அதிகபட்ச தண்டனை கிடைக்கும் வகையில், புலன்விசாரணையும், வழக்குகளில் வாதமும் அமையவேண்டும். ஏனெனில், சிறுகுழந்தைகளை பாலியல் கொடுமைசெய்த வழக்குகளில் நாடுமுழுவதும் 20 சதவீதத்துக்கும் குறைவான வழக்குகளில்தான் தண்டனை கிடைத்துள்ளது.

தமிழ்நாட்டில் 2017–ம் ஆண்டு மட்டும் பாலியல் குற்றங்களிலிருந்து சிறார்களை பாதுகாக்கும் சட்டத்தின்கீழ் 1,587 வழக்குகள் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. பல வழக்குகளில் குற்றவாளிகளை கண்டுபிடித்து கைது செய்வதற்கும், கைதுசெய்தபின் புலன் விசாரணையை முடிப்பதற்கும், குற்றப்பத்திரிகை தாக்கல்செய்வதற்கும் காலதாமதமாகிறது. அதன்பின்பு வழக்குகள் நடந்து தீர்ப்புவருவதற்கு நீண்டநெடுங்காலமாகிறது. நமது சட்டங்களில் இதுபோன்ற குற்றங்களுக்கு கடுமையான தண்டனை விதிக்க பிரிவுகள் இருக்கின்றன. ஆனால், குற்றச்சாட்டுகளை முறையாக நிரூபிக்கத்தவறும் பட்சத்திலும், அந்தவழக்குகளை திறமையான வாதங்கள் மூலம் நடத்திமுடிப்பதில் ஏற்படும் குறைபாடுகளாலும், குற்றவாளிகளை தண்டிக்க முடியாமல் போய்விடுகிறது. 2012–ம்ஆண்டு நடந்த ‘நிர்பயா’ சம்பவத்தில் இன்னும் குற்றவாளிகளின் தண்டனை நிறைவேற்றப்படவில்லை. ஆக, குற்றம்செய்தால் உடனடி தண்டனை நிச்சயம் என்ற அச்சஉணர்வு குற்றவாளிகளுக்கு ஏற்படவேண்டும். நமது போலீசார் குற்றவாளிகளை நிச்சயமாக கண்டுபிடித்துவிடுவார்கள். நாமும் கண்டிப்பாக மாட்டிக்கொள்வோம் என்ற பயமும் இருக்கவேண்டும். ஆக, ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும், அதாவது குற்றங்களை தடுப்பதற்கு முதலில் உரியசூழ்நிலையை உருவாக்கவேண்டும். அப்படி ஏதாவது சம்பவம் நடந்தால் குற்றவாளிகளை கண்டுபிடிப்பதற்கும், புலன்விசாரணை முடிப்பதற்கும், குற்றப்பத்திரிகை தாக்கல் செய்வதற்கும், வழக்குகளை நடத்திமுடிப்பதற்கும் உரியகாலக்கெடுவை நிர்ணயிப்பது மிகவும் நல்லது.

Teachers thrash deaf and mute boy

A deaf and mute student of Class V at a Garia school was allegedly thrashed by a teacher on Wednesday. The boy’s parents lodged a complaint against the accused at the Sonarpur police station.

When victim Subhajit Das a student at Mahamayapur Adarsha Vidyapith — returned home on Wednesday, his mother Aparna noticed that he was behaving oddly. When she asked what was wrong, he broke down and wrote the accused teacher’s name on a piece of paper, explaining in sign language that he had been thrashed in school.

Aparna spoke to the school’s academic secretary, Suparna Raha, and teacher-incharge Pradipta Mondal who assured her that they would convene a meeting with teachers on Thursday. The parents also lodged a complaint

jit a few months ago.

Later in the day, Suparna went to the Das’s house with five school teachers and assured his parents that such incident would never occur again.

Hearing impaired girl Yashaswi from Bantwal wins medal at Int’l chess contest

Bantwal, Jul 20: A differently-abled girl, an emerging chess champion from Bantwal, has brought laurels to India by representing the country in the recently concluded international chess tournament in England and winning bronze medal.

Yashaswi, a resident of Kudumanu, Kedila, is speech and hearing impaired. She represented India in the tournament held for hearing impaired at Manchester, England recently.

Yashaswi achieved 1300 rating in chess. Yashaswi is the second child of Thimmappa Moolya, a lab assistant at SVS College, Bantwal and Yashoda, a government school teacher. She was trained by Puttur Genius chess school director Satyaprasad Kote and Ashakaveri couple.

Yashaswi had also won prizes in state level chess competition in Mysuru in November and national level chess competition held in Madhya Pradesh in December last year.

Yashaswi is a class 10 student at Bantwal Kadeshivalaya high school.

Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik Ulipady and several others have commended her achievement.

Yashaswi was welcomed by her Kadeshivalaya high school in procession on Thursday July 19 for her unique feat.

Indian-origin techie develops app that enables home speakers to read sign language

The app uses a camera to read sign language. Once it registers the instruction by the user, it transmits a voice command to a home speaker through a laptop. When Echo responds, the app registers it and consequently types it out for the user.

An Indian origin techie, Abhishek Singh, has developed an app which will enable the hearing-impaired community to interact with a home speaker using sign language.

The app uses a camera to read sign language. Once it registers the instruction by the user, it transmits a voice command to a home speaker like Amazon Echo that runs on Amazon Alexa. When the speaker responds, the app registers it and consequently types it out for the user.

“The project was a thought experiment inspired by observing a trend among companies of pushing voice-based assistants as a way to create instant, seamless interactions. If these devices are to become a central way we interact with our homes or perform tasks, then some thought needs to be given to those who cannot hear or speak. Seamless design needs to be inclusive in nature,” Singh was quoted in a report by Fast Company.

To build the system, Singh, who first gained recognition for creating popular game Super Mario Bros. in augmented reality, trained an AI in the popular machine learning platform Tensorflow.With repeated hand gestures that articulate sign language, Singh was able to teach the system what the language "looked" like. He then deployed Google’s text-to-speech functionality to read the words out loud to Amazon Echo.

சென்னை: சென்னை அயனாவரத்தில் காது கேளாத வாய் பேச இயலாத சிறுமியை சீரழித்த 17 பேரையும் தூக்கிட்டு கொல்லுங்கள் என்று சென்னையில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்தில் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளனர். 

சென்னை அயனாவரத்தில் அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்பில் காது கேளாத, வாய் பேசமுடியாத சிறுமி ஒருவர் தனது தாய் தந்தை, சகோதரியுடன் வசித்து வந்தார். இவர் கடந்த ஜனவரி மாதம் பள்ளிக்கு சென்றுவிட்டு லிப்டில் வரும் போது லிப்ட் ஆபரேட்டர் ரவி (66) என்பவன் சிறுமியை பலாத்காரம் செய்தான்.

இதையடுத்து மற்றவர்களையும் அழைத்து சிறுமியை நாசம் செய்துள்ளான். இதுபோல் சிறுமியை 7 மாதங்களாக 17 பேர் பலாத்காரம் செய்தனர். இதுதொடர்பாக புகாரின் பேரில் 17 பேரையும் போலீஸார் கைது செய்தனர். 

அவர்களுக்கு ஆண்மை பரிசோதனை செய்ய திட்டமிட்டுள்ளனர். இந்நிலையில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளி மாணவிக்கு பாதுகாப்பு இல்லை என்று கூறி சென்னை சைதாப்பேட்டையில் மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகள் நல சங்கத்தினர் ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் செய்தனர். 

அப்போது அவர்கள் கூறுகையில் குற்றவாளிகளுக்கு கடுமையான தண்டனை வழங்கப்பட வேண்டும். மாற்றுத்திறனாளிகளுக்கு பாதுகாப்பு அளிக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் அவர்கள் வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளனர்.
