A day after a 12-year-old girl with hearing impairment was sexually assaulted for seven months in an apartment in Chennai by security guards, Makkal Needhi Maiam chief and actor Kamal Haasan expressed shock and said perpetrators must face severe punishment.
While addressing the media at the Chennai airport, the actor stated, "Perpetrators must face severe punishment in order to ensure justice to the victim and maintain the public's faith in the judiciary."
Haasan also stated that these incidents are a result of "collective failure and apathy of the government, civil society and the media."
This is not the first time the actor-turned- politician has addressed the matter of sexual abuse. Earlier also, he has requested his supporters to educate their children about the issue.
Kamal Haasan highlighted the fact that many cases of sexual harassment are perpetrated by individuals who are family or known to the victim.
The MNM chief also spoke to people on mob justice stating, "If we took the law into our own hands that will not serve any purpose. He called for swift legal action against the criminals and maximum possible sentence under the law."
Kamal Haasan had earlier taken upon the matter of death penalty for rapists stating why should it be only if the victim is a child below the age of 12.
