Jalandhar, December 6
Mallika Handa (23), a hearing and speech-impaired player has won a gold medal in National Chess Championship of the Deaf. The event was organised by All India Sports Council of the Deaf in Jaipur fromDecember 1 to December 5.
Handa has won the gold medal in the national championship for the sixth time. She had recently won a silver medal in the fifth World Deaf Blitz Chess Championship in Manchester.
Mallika’s parents said she had participated in the state and national-level competitions and had never come back home empty-handed.
“She doesn’t sleep at night before the tournaments. She has never got any help from the government. We have approached officials concerned, but to no avail,” the parents rued.
As per her parents, Mallika does not have any coach.
Suresh Handa said despite winning various medals, the government had never helped her.
