High on spirit and enthusiasm, students of Bhagat Puran Singh School for Deaf and Mute, Pingalwara, were the cynosure of all eyes during the full dress rehearsals for the Republic Day function to be held at Guru Nanak Stadium here on Friday. These students, for the first time, will be performing the national anthem in sign language on the day.

Their mentor, Ravneet Kaur, shared their joy as she instructed them to the tee, painting slightest of mistake in coordination. “These children have been performing the national anthem and morning prayers in sign language in their school every day. It has become a routine for them,” she explains.

This will be the first time that these children will be participating in the district-level Republic Day function to be held on January 26. “They are all very happy and excited. For them to be sharing the stage with other students on a big day is a reassurance that they stand on equal ground,” said Ravneet, who has been a teacher at the school for the last few years.

Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney too interacted with these kids and lauded them for their focused performance.

The grand parade this year would also have a segment each from the Punjab Police Women Platoon, the Punjab Home Guards and the Punjab Police Band under the command of Parade Commander Arvind Meena.

The Deputy Commissioner said Cabinet Minister for Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Investment Promotion, Labour, Industries and Rural Development & Panchayats, Tarunpreet Singh Saund will perform the ceremony of hoisting the national flag.

Rare National Anthem by hearing impaired students of SKK at R-Day

JAMMU: In a rare showcasing of their skill, thirty-eight hearing-impaired students from the Samaj Kalyan Kendra (SKK), a well-known charitable society in Jammu, performed the National Anthem in sign language as Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha raised the Tricolor flag at M A Stadium on January 26th. Clad in white attire, they synchronized perfectly with each line of the anthem, earning loud applause from the packed stadium.

Thanks to the efforts of the Republic Day Committee and the Chief Education Officer of Jammu, these talented individuals from the School for Hearing Handicapped, operated by SKK, were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to exhibit their abilities in front of a distinguished audience and the general public. This was introduced in the celebration for the first time under samagra shiksha abhiyan.
These thirty-eight students were part of a larger ensemble of 128 differently-abled participants who made their debut in the Republic Day celebrations in J&K, an unprecedented achievement. Other participants included students from the School for Mentally Retarded Children, Phelan Mandaal, the Resource Room for special children at Ranbir Higher Secondary School, Jammu Red Cross Home for the Handicapped in Udheywala, and a few students from regular government schools.
This diverse group of hearing-impaired and handicapped students captivated the crowd with an enchanting dance performance set to a blend of popular Kashmiri, Rajasthani, Punjabi, and Dogri folk songs. It was a remarkable sight to see these individuals, some of whom could not hear, moving in perfect harmony with the rhythm of the music. Their debut performance left everyone spellbound, and the participating students were thrilled and proud of their achievement.
The entire SKK community praised the extraordinary debut performance of the differently-abled students. The President of SKK, K B Jandial announced awards the participating students in recognition of their landmark achievement.

Gorakhpur dominates at Uttar Pradesh State Deaf Games

Kanpur: Gorakhpur secured seven medals, including three gold and two silver, emerging victorious in the first UP Deaf Games that concluded at Ragendra Swarup Sports Academy on Saturday. Lucknow finished as runners-up with two gold, four silver and two bronze medals, whilst Bareilly claimed third position with four medals, including one gold and one silver. The championship featured Table Tennis and Badminton events with approximately 70 participants. Archana Pandey of Lucknow clinched the TT singles crown. Vimal Sharma of Bareilly captured the men's singles title. Aditya Yadav of Gorakhpur clained the badminton men's singles title. Chief guest Arun Pathak, member legislative council, and Sanjeev Pathak, patron KDBA, distributed prizes to the winners.

India’s Prithvi Sekhar retains Australian Open Deaf Championship title

Prithvi Sekhar repeated his performance of winning the Australian Open deaf tennis championship as he beat Oliver Grave of France 6-3, 6-1 in the final at the Melbourne Park on Sunday.

“I am thrilled to win this event once again. The competition was a lot tougher this time,” said Prithvi from Melbourne.

“Both my quarterfinals and semifinals were hard matches, and lasted three sets. I missed two match points at 5-3 in the third set in the semifinals against Marino Kegl. He served well to survive those match points. I saved one match point in the tie-break and played calm after that, taking my time, to win that. I was confident and well prepared for the final. Very happy with the way I played the final against another good player,” recalled Prithvi.

He gave credit to Anirudh Chandrasekar for the training he had with him for three days before the championship that particularly helped him get used to tackling a left-hander.

Prithvi also got to watch a few matches at the Rod Laver arena and other show courts.

“Australian Open has a terrific atmosphere. It was fantastic to be there once again and win the title. I had a lot of people cheering for me and I thank my family and friends for the great support,” said Prithvi, who will be returning home in Chennai on Tuesday night.

Prithvi’s quarterfinal opponent was his doubles partner Marco Carretta of Italy, and it was a long drawn affair, spanning two hours and 20 minutes.

“We won one match in super tie-break in doubles and lost two other matches in super tie-break. Doubles was round-robin format and we finished third,” recalled Prithvi.

21.01.2025, Mumbai: Josh Foundation organized a heartwarming Dance Competition at the Mukesh Patel Auditorium, NMIMS, Vile Parle (West), bringing together over 250 hearing-impaired children from 14 schools to showcase their exceptional talent. The event, centered on the theme “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” highlighted the importance of unity, inclusion, and empowerment.

The audience was captivated by 16 mesmerizing performances by the children, who demonstrated resilience and creativity through dance, breaking barriers with their extraordinary efforts. The event was graced by prominent personalities, including Chief Guest Mr. Murli Menon, Director Group Security & CSR Lead at ATOS, Mr. Shirish Anjaria, Chairman and Managing Director of Dynacons Systems & Solutions Ltd, Ms. Vaibhavi Shah, Executive Director R&D at Inventia Healthcare, Mr. Ankur Shah, Whole Time Director of Business Development at Inventia Healthcare, and Shri Gauranga Das, a renowned Spiritual Counsellor.

Speaking on the occasion, Devangi Dalal, an Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathologist, and one of the founder-trustees of Josh Foundation, said, “This event is a testament to the power of inclusion. Dance transcends all boundaries, and today, we witnessed these children express their inner strength and joy through this universal art form. A distinguished panel of judges added to the event’s prestige, featuring choreographers Gulnaaz Khan and Harsh Vardhan Khemka, actress and performer Arshi Khan, and actress Sahila Chaddha. Their expertise and enthusiasm inspired the young participants, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and celebration. Judge Gulnaaz Khan mentioned that “These children are living examples of how art transcends barriers. Their passion, energy, and creativity inspire us to see the world as one family united by love and hope.”

In addition to the competition, Josh Foundation, with the generous support of their donors, provided digital hearing aids to underprivileged hearing-impaired children on the day of the event. Throughout the year, the foundation has supported around 500 children with Digital Hearing Aids, furthering their mission to enhance the quality of life for these children.

ஹரியானாவில் நடைபெற்ற தேசிய 'ஸ்ட்ரென்ட் லிப்ட்' சாம்பியன்ஷிப் போட்டியில் பிறவியில் வாய் பேச முடியாத தூத்துக்குடி மாற்றுத்திறனாளி கல்லூரி மாணவி இரண்டு தங்கப்பதக்கம், ஒரு வெண்கலம் வென்று சாதனை தூத்துக்குடி வந்த அவருக்கு சக வீரர்கள் வரவேற்பு அளித்து பாராட்டு தெரிவித்தனர்.

அனைத்து போட்டிகளின் முடிவில், தமிழக வீரர் வீராங்கனையர்கள் 13 தங்கம், 7 வெள்ளி, 12 வெண்கலம் என மொத்தம் 32 பதக்கங்களை வென்று சாதனை படைத்தனர்.

One of the most common yet preventable forms of hearing loss is Noise Induced Hearing Loss or NIHL. NIHL is an irreversible condition that is caused due to prolonged exposure to loud noises, causing permanent damage to the delicate hair cells in our inner ear. Unfortunately, NIHL is becoming an increasing risk in India especially among teenagers and the younger working population. Youngsters are at a higher risk as they are constantly hooked to loud music through headphones. In the US, nearly 17% of teenagers are showing signs of NIHL and Indian youth are following in the same footsteps. Along with device usage induced hearing loss, widespread noise pollution is also contributing to the problem.

Understanding how sound affects our hearing

To fully understand how we can prevent NIHL, we must first understand how sound is processed by our ears. The cochlea is a spiral shaped organ in our inner ear which plays a vital role in hearing. The cochlea contains thousands of tiny hair-like protrusions called stereocilia. When sound waves hit these hair-like structures, they convert sound vibrations into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain thus allowing us to perceive sound.

These hairs are very sensitive and when exposed to loud noises, they can be damaged and in severe cases even destroyed. When exposed to constant loud noise over headphones, the damage is gradual and often goes unnoticed until significant damage has already occurred.

How much sound is safe for the human ear

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 80 dB (decibels) as an upper limit for safe hearing. For context, 80 dB is equivalent to the noise of a busy street, and hearing experts consider it safe to be exposed for up to eight hours to this level of sound. If the exposure increases above 100 dB, damage can occur in a matter of minutes. Hence ear experts like Dr. Shree Rao, recommend to stay away from high pitched noises like construction sites, concerts, or constant usage of earphones at high volume.

Social events: Concerts, parties and other social events can sometimes reach high decibel levels posing a risk to the attendees.

Explore sound settings on your device: Most modern smartphones provide warnings when you max out on your device volume, be aware of these settings to ensure you do not blast your ears at full volume.

IDCA inaugurates 2nd T10 Women's Deaf Premier League 2025 in Mumbai
