28.05.2015, PUNE: Disabled students in the state posted a significant improvement in their performance in the Higher Secondary Certificate ( HSC, standard XII) examinations. Their pass percentage increased from 89.32 last year to 91.35, this year.
From a pass percentage of 77.14, hearing-impaired students raised the bar to 86.46 per cent. However, speech-impaired students' results dipped from 71.13 to 68.80% this year, the only category that saw a downward trend. The visually impaired students, who have been improving their performances over the years, recorded a pass percentage of 93.16.
"There has been a qualitative change in the performance of disabled students. Much of it has to do with technological advancement. We have seen the results of our students improve steadily in recent years," Gangadhar Mhamane, chairman of the Maharashtra State board of secondary and higher secondary education said.
The board had extended special measures given to cerebral palsy patients to those who suffer from sickle-cell anaemia and thalassaemia as well. They got an additional 20 minutes for every hour and could get a writer if they wanted, he added.
"One reason for better performance of these students is also the facilities provided by the board. But the credit goes to the efforts of students, their parents and the school authorities," said Mhamane.
