With an aim to create awareness about the world of disabled children in the society, Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) education department organized a sign language workshop for the members of Nagpur for Kids (NFK) Club at Yeshwant Stadium, Dhantoli on Tuesday. The workshop, held under the umbrella of Sarva Shikshan Abhiyaan (SSA), was conducted by project coordinator Abhijeet Raut.
In the first session, Raut discussed the difficulties faced by deaf and dumb children. Children also learnt about different hearing and speaking disabilities.
Later, two deaf and dumb children interacted with NFK Club members. Children were assigned different situations and asked to communicate with deaf kids.
Stressing the need to learn sign language and engage with all differently abled children, Raut said that they are not aliens. "They have some different body functions and therefore they behave differently. If we know sign language we can help deaf and dumb children."
Raut further said that mastery of alphabets is important for learning sign language.
Children were also taught different hand gestures using the 26 alphabets. Using sign language, children recited their names. Parents of the NFK Club members also attended the workshop.
Manpreet Sond, a parent, said, "Such workshops instill a moral responsibility in children and help them understand about life of special people." It is important that children learn to respect people irrespective of their disability, she added.
Concluding the workshop, Raut told children that they must empathize with special people, absorb them into the society and help them make a better future.
