NAGPUR : Special students from schools for the blind, deaf and dumb have performed exceptionally in SSC exams, just like students with other disabilities.
Thirty-seven students appeared from the Deaf and Dumb School (DDS) at Shankar Nagar and recorded 100% result for the fourth consecutive year, giving first topper from Nagpur in the category of students with disability.
Kamal Waghmare, principal of DDS, said, "Me and my whole team of teachers have to work harder to teach these special students. We always try new techniques to teach them, so they will be able to learn faster."
"In the recent past, only once has our school not recorded 100% result, because one student did not appear for the exam. Otherwise we have delivered 100% results," added Waghmare.
Deaf and mute Sonam Devikar of DDS topped the city in the category of challenged students with a score of 90.20%. Pooja Dhote and Archana Nakhate stood second and third in DDS with 83.20% and 80% scores respectively. The students appeared for exams in Marathi and Hindi languages.
Special students with other disabilities like blindness, handicaps and cerebral palsy have also scored remarkable percentages in SSC exams. Kurve New Model High School (KNMH) highlighted the remarkable success of Yogeshwar Thakre, who topped from Maharashtra with a score of 89.60% in the blind category. Vaishali Pare and Pranay Nandurkar from blind category stood second and third in the school with a score of 77.20% and 75.40 % respectively. Thirteen out of fourteen students who appeared from KMNH in blind category passed the exam.
A single student also appeared for the exam in the category of cerebral palsy from KNMH, and passed with a score of 71.40%. Kartik Kutumbe topped the city in the category of cerebral palsy, by scoring 79.20% while appearing from Mundle School.
Ten students in handicapped category also appeared and cleared SSC exam from KNMH. Vishal Vasatkar and Varsha Ingle stood first and second with scores of 77.60% and 76% respectively.
Vidya Bachale, head of handicapped students in KNMH, said, "It is really hard to teach these students as we have to repeatedly make them understand every topic. Even though they are handicapped, their minds are very sharp, it helps them learn many things. Every year our school aims for 100% results and we will continue to keep the record."
