IMPHAL, Nov 5 - In an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records, about 3,911 hearing aid and assistive devices were distributed to persons with disabilities at a single location within eight hours in Manipur on Saturday.
Earlier, Gujarat had created the world record with ‘Most people fitted with Hearing Aid’ in eight hours at a single location (600 hearing aid) during their record attempt on September 17 this year.
Manipur Health department attempted to distribute to as many as 6,464 hearing impaired persons in the Distribution of Aid and Assistive Devices to Persons with Disabilities (DIVYANGJAN) function held at the indoor stadium at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal. The distribution started at 8.45 am and concluded at 4.45 pm.
Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawarchand Gehlot and Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh besides State Health Minister DK Korungthang attended the programme.
The programme was organised by the Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, National Health Mission, Manipur in collaboration with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJ&E) and Government of India.
The needy persons (6,464) were identified in 49 camps conducted in the State under National Health Mission during which more than 12,000 patients were screened. The total cost of the hearing aid of Rs 4.44 crore is being borne by ALIMCO.
Around 150 audiologists were engaged to conduct the entire process of fitting hearing aid to the hearing impaired individuals within 10 minutes.
