LUDHIANA: They performed the Krishna Leela with elan, moving gracefully and confidently. Their expressions left the audience mesmerized.
The performance evoked thundering applause from an audience comprising overwhelmed, teary-eyed parents. The performance by students of the Deaf and Dumb School, Humbran Road received a standing ovation.
Besides the Krishna leela, the school's annual day was peppered with performances to Bollywood numbers, Sufi songs and even a cheerful Lavni. Every single one of the 90 participants compelled the audience to marvel at their sense of rhythm.
Class XII students Kamaljeet Kaur and Gurnoor Kaur had the audience spellbound with their Sufi performance. Class VIII students Varahi Chandok and Harleen Kaur performed the Lavni.
The desi look mix dance by the primary section was a fusion of bollywood songs and choreography. It depicted terrorists encountering Jasmine, a 6-year-old school student.
The programme ended with a bhangra performance. Hans Raj, a Class XII student received the title of Student of the Year for his impeccable manners and academic excellence. He bagged first position in Class X exams, said his teacher, adding that he scored more than 80 %. Harpreet Kaur of the same class bagged the best student trophy.
For the first time, the school also gave away the most caring parent award to Ranjit Kaur, whose sons, Joban Preet and Gurpreet Singh, are students of the school.
Ranjit, a resident of Gurdaspur near Ferozepur, said, "My husband and I visit the school on a regular basis. When we came to know about their disability, we left no stone unturned to ensure their happiness and well-being."
Parents of Kasni Bhagat, 9, were proud to see her counting and recognizing the alphabets with a hearing aid. Sandeep Bhagat, her father, said, "I am so happy to see my daughter recognizing words. We don't want her to talk differently, we do not want other kids to tease her, we do not want her to stop playing because of a disability. She has done wonders. Students here are developing as productive members of society," said Sandeep.
