IMPHAL, March 6 - Among the different forms of disabilities in the four Northeastern States of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, hearing impairment accounts for the highest number of Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
This observation was made by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) Additional Director Sandeep P Tambe while speaking at a two-day Regional seminar on capacity building of rehabilitation professionals for persons with disabilities in North Eastern States, here on Thursday.
Manipur has 54,110 PWDs including 18,226 visually impaired persons, while there are 8,940 hearing impaired persons out of 29,631 PWDs in Nagaland. Mizoram has 3,354 out of 15,160 PWDs, while Tripura has 10,695 out of 64,346 PWDs, according to Census report.
Expressing concern over the small number of rehabilitation professionals for PWDs in North East, the RCI official stated that there are just 1,283 in NE. Assam and Manipur have the highest number – 464 and 451 – while Nagaland has just six.
