Short films directed, produced and edited by those with hearing impairment were screened on Thursday as part of the 4th ‘India Deaf Expo 2015’ that began at PSG Arts and Science College on Thursday.
More than 1,000 people with hearing impairment, including 110 from other countries, took part in the event.
The event is jointly organsied by DEAF LEADERS Foundation, Sakthi Group of Companies and Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown. It is supported by CBM South Asia Regional Office, Bengaluru, an organisation supporting initiatives for betterment of persons with various disabilities.
Thirty-two short films to be screened at the festival were categorised into four groups based on the duration of the film.
Twenty five short films running from one minute to 15 minutes were screened on Thursday. These films with sign language and no voice depicted issues faced by hearing impaired persons.
Earlier, executive chairman of Sakthi Sugars Ltd M. Manickam inaugurated the event. He received the first copy of the DVD ‘Sign language noun, grammar for primary school level’ released by Rajani Gopalakrishnan, senior manager of CBM.
Madan Vashista, Professor, Gallaudet University, the U.S., gave an overview of the scenario of hearing impaired people in India.
Among eminent speakers were CEO of Deaf Nation (the U.S.) Joel Barish; president of Hong Kong Association of The Deaf Lau Fong Lai; founder of Clin d' oeil, (France) David De Keyzer; executive director of National Institute of Speech and Hearing, Thiruvananthapuram, Samuel N. Mathew; and Erik Kristensen from Castberggard (Denmark).

Contests
Various cultural competitions, sports and games will be organised for the participants till Saturday.
A photography competition will be conducted on Friday.
The first round of Miss and Mrs. India Deaf Expo began on Thursday.
