23.07.2016, Ahmedabad: It was a shocking revelation for the administrators at Paldi Vikas Gruh, a women's shelter home, when a woman in thirties, having speech and hearing impairment, was found pregnant on July 17 by a staff doctor. A sonography the following day confirmed that she had pregnancy of 20 weeks. The authorities, however, decided to wait and conduct investigation themselves.
Mittal Patel, superintendent of prevention and rescue department at Vikas Gruh, lodged a complaint against Amrut Patel, 56, who was working as clerk at the school on the premises. Amrut, a resident of Thakkarbapanagar Road, managed to escape before police arrived on Thursday. He has allegedly confessed to the crime in front of the trustees and has given his acceptance in writing.
Paldi police rounded up Patel late on Friday night from the city. He will be sent for medical tests on Saturday. A major issue ahead of the victim is to get the court's permission for abortion. "The woman might find it difficult to raise the child and the shelter home might appeal to permit the abortion," said a source.
A G Gohil, inspector of Paldi police station, said that the woman was found by Gaekwad Haveli police in September 2014 roaming in the area. "She was transferred to the shelter home for security reasons. She can communicate with sign language. According to the complaint, she had irregular menstrual periods for which she was taken to a doctor at the VS Hospital last year. However, when the authorities realized that she had not reported periods since February, they got alarmed," he said.
The complaint mentions that Patel confessed to raping the victim two times on the premises near a temple.
According to sources, Patel's daughter is settled in Australia and he lives with his nine-year-old son. Patel was earlier working as a teacher at Thakar School near the VS Hospital from where he was transferred to the school at shelter home four years ago as the school got shut.
