Kolkata: The initial medical report in the alleged gang rape of a 35-year-old speech and hearing impaired woman is still awaited, but police are treating all four suspects as prime accused in gang rape.
"The medical report will be crucial evidence, but we have enough circumstantial evidence to nail all four accused. We have enough to secure conviction for gang rape," said a senior officer of Port division. Among the evidence collected so far are the victim's earrings and the suspects' mobile location. "Several witnesses saw the suspects with the unwilling woman in the car," a source said. Given her speech and hearing impairment, arrangements have been made to ensure she does not feel intimidated while recording her statement before a magistrate.
According to legal experts, circumstantial evidence is an established method of proving a charge of rape. If the facts indicate that it is highly likely rape occurred — such as the victim being seen along with the accused after the alleged rape, as in this case — it may be enough for a conviction.
