15.07.2016, AHMEDABAD: Two Gujarat state paddlers- Shiney Gomes and Manush Shah- have done the state proud. The young table tennis players will be donning India colours later this month, albiet in different events.
Ahmedabad's Shiney, 19, has been picked for the Third World Deaf Table Tennis Championship to be held in Samsun, Turkey on July 18-24. The St Xavier's College student has been a consistent performer at the national level since 2013.
After having finished third in women's singles event at the National Games of the Deaf in Bengaluru in 2013, Shiney won a bronze in singles at the All-India Game of the deaf, Gandhinagar in 2014. She also won bronze in doubles, besides a silver in mixed doubles. However, it was her gold-medal show at the National Games of the deaf in Telangana and a silver in All-India Deaf Table Tennis meet in Delhi this year that earned her the national call-up.
An excited Shiney told TOI: "Being the lone paddler from the state, my main challenge will be to combine well with other state's paddlers who are in the team so that we can perform well in Turkey," she said. Gomes will leave for Delhi on Thursday evening to be part of the preparatory camp after which the team will depart for Turkey on 16.
Meanwhile, Vadodara paddler Manush Shah made the cut for the Indian junior boys' team for the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship in Karachi, Pakistan on July 15-17.
