15.05.2016, Kendrapada: Loma Swain, 16, a deaf and mute girl of Bhutamundei village in Jagatsinghpur district, received a rousing reception when she returned to her village on Friday. She recently won two gold medals at the 14th International Karate Championships at Kandy in Sri Lanka.
The 16-year-old won two gold medals in kata and kumite categories of karate on May 8. Her family members along with villagers are elated over her achievement.
"Loma's victory is our's too. It's a victory of the village," said Dhirendra Kumar Swain of Bhutamundei.
"Her journey is full of guts and glory. She has inspired the youth of the state. She always believed in hard work and her determination paid off. I encouraged her to practise karate because as a girl she can protect herself," said Sanjay Swain, father of Loma. She is the second daughter of Sanjay and Jyotimayee.
"When my daughter was diagnosed as deaf-mute during her childhood, I was devastated. But now I am happy and consider my daughter as a normal child," said Jyotimayee.
