16.05.2016, Agra: A deaf and mute student of class XII stunned his teachers in Agra when he beat a host of his physically able classmates to grab fourth rank in his school in the UP Board intermediate exams, results of which were declared on Sunday.
Seventeen-year-old Mayank Sharma, a student of Sri Ram Krishna Inter College, scored 80.2 % in class XII from science stream. Son of LIC agent Vinod Sharma and teacher Anamika Sharma, Mayank was born without hearing and speaking capabilities but was always bright in academics.
According to his friends Arbaz Taleeb and Deepak, "Initially it was difficult for Mayank as well as for us to understand each other, but later when we became friends, we develop our own sign language to communicate."
"In our junior classes when teachers use to teach us maths table by asking us to recite the multiplications, Mayank use to observe our lips movement and learned the table. He is sheer genius," he added.
Somved Sarswat, principal of the school Mayank attended, said, "Mayank is a very bright student. Initially, we had faced problems in teaching him, but later with gradual understanding of sign language, we taught him."
"The school is proud of his achievement," he added. In class X board too, Mayank had scored 89% and was a ranker.
According to his teachers, he is bright as well as "notorious for his mischiefs". Mayank was the member of so called MBBS (members of back benchers' society). "In classrooms, he and his friends were very naughty but intelligent too," one of his teachers said.
According to Mayank, he wants to go for research after completing his graduation and post-graduation and also wishes to work as a civil servant. Currently, he is attending coaching classes for a government job.
In spare time, Mayank teaches his younger brother Mukesh who is currently studying in class VII.
