Half-way through the school summer holidays, results for Class 12 exams are out and many children and parents around the country are celebrating.
Three achievers from different backgrounds and circumstances have shown us what it takes to beat the odds and rise above circumstances.
A deaf and mute boy from Agra left several of his physically able classmates behind to rank 4th in his school in the UP Intermediate Board Exams.
Academically bright from a very young age, 17-year-old Mayank Sharma from Shri Ram Krishna Intermediate College, got 80.2% in the science stream.
Born without the ability to hear or speak, Mayank is the son of LIC agent Vinod Sharma and teacher Anamika Sharma.
The principal of his school, Somved Sarswat, told Times of India, “Mayank is a very bright student. Initially, we had faced problems in teaching him, but later with gradual understanding of sign language, we taught him.” His friends Arbaz and Deepak said, “In our junior classes when teachers use to teach us maths table by asking us to recite the multiplications, Mayank use to observe our lips movement and learned the table. He is sheer genius.”
Mayank would like to do a PhD after completing graduation and post graduation, and also prepare for the Civil Services exam. In his spare time, this handicapped but talented youngster teaches his younger brother who is studying in Class 7.
The second achiever, Aakash Khatwani is also from Agra.
All of 12 years old, this wonder kid leapt ahead of several teenagers in his school to clear the UP Intermediate Board Exams with 74% marks.
Known as the “wonder boy” of Agra, Aakash is a student of Mufeed-e-aam Inter College. He was just 3 years old when his father, who runs a coaching centre in the city, took him to Agra Public School and had him admitted in Class 1.
Aakash comes from a family of achievers. His 15-year-old sister is doing an MBA from Hindustan College and another sister, aged 14, is doing a diploma in architecture. Parents Satish and Kamini obviously believe in simple living and high thinking since they do not have cable television at home to distract the children.
Another success story comes from the city of Ludhiana in Punjab.
Mahima Nagpal, the daughter of a scrap dealer who struggles to take care of his family of four with the meagre Rs. 10,000 he earns per month, has topped the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class 12 exams.
Mahima is the daughter of Sanjiv and Poonam Nagpal and studies at RS Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana. She was receiving a fee concession from her school owing to her family circumstances.
Mahima told Hindustan Times that she would study 18-20 hours a day. “I never took any coaching. I believe self study is the best,” she said. She aspires to be an IAS officer.
