12.01.2016, INDORE: An elderly couple from Bihar on Monday claimed that Geeta, who was brought from Pakistan last year, was actually their daughter Rubeda.
The 23-year-old hearing-speech impaired girl has been staying at city-based Mook Badhir Sansthan after her return to India on October 26. Mohd Isha, his wife and grandson, residents of Mirzapur town in Bihar's Chhapra district, reached Indore and claimed that Geeta was their estranged daughter, district collector P Narahari told TOI. Isha Mohd told reporters here that the structures which Geeta recalled are located near his house. "Rubeda (Geeta) was deaf and dumb. She went missing from a wedding ceremony," he claimed. However, Geeta apparently failed to recognise them. "Their photographs were sent to Geeta, who did not remember them as parents," the district collector said. As per the procedural guidelines laid down by the external affairs ministry, couples claiming to be Geeta's parents have to show "substantial evidence", Narahari said, adding Geeta has to confirm that she recognises them, even faintly, before DNA tests are conducted to corroborate any claim. "Since Geeta did not recognise them, there was no question of proceeding with the DNA test," he added.
Geeta is believed to have been found by Pakistan rangers sitting alone aboard the Samjhauta Express at the Lahore railway station around 10 years ago. External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had made fervent appeal to locate the family of Geeta. "There is a hospital at the end of the lane of her house. There are paddy and sugarcane fields. On the other side is a railway track and Durga Mandir. There is a rivulet close by where people do fishing. From what she has conveyed, she appears to be from Bihar or Jharkhand," Swaraj had claimed.
