The 7th Unified Games 2016 were organised by the combined efforts of the Dubai-based Chandar Shekhar Kohli in association with the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society at Manawala Complex. The aim behind organising these games is to bring together on one platform the specially-abled and hearing impaired sections of society and groom their sporting talent. The games were inaugurated by Gurbir Singh, District and Sessions Judge, Amritsar. He was the chief guest and inaugurated the games. The events started with the hoisting of the flag and a march-past by the students of Bhagat Puran Singh Senior Secondary School, Bhagat Puran Singh Special School and Bhagat Puran Singh School for the Deaf.
A total of 250 competitors participated in these games and displayed their achievements with great enthusiasm. The items included track events, throws, jumps, tug of war and many other games. In her address, Dr Inderjit Kaur, president, All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, appreciated the efforts made by Kohli in organizing such a momentous event and hoped that it will inspire the residents of Amritsar and make them aware of the special needs of the children.
Members of the NRI community from the USA and Dubai, especially Amarjit Singh Bal (international hockey coach) along with Kanwar Vijay Partap Singh, DIG Border range, Abnash Kaur, Gurdip Singh Kang, Girish Bansal, chief judicial magistrate and secretary, Legal Services Authority, besides Dr Ravi Saini, were the guest of honour.
Gurbir Singh, while addressing the gathering, appreciated the spirit and grit displayed by the participants and wished that every citizen will be more sensitive towards this segment of society. The highlights of the event were the display of gatka and gidda by the special inmates.
Col Darshan Singh Bawa, administrator, Pingalwara, Tilak Raj, general manager, Jai Singh, Administrator, Manawala, were among those present.
