MUMBAI: After arriving in India from Pakistan the deaf-mute young woman Geeta met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherji accompanied by Bilquis Edhi under whose care she had spent the last 13 years in Pakistan.
As a gesture of thanks, Modi announced a donation of Rs 10 million for the Edhi Foundation. However Bilquis Edhi turned down the offer with thanks stating that the Edhi Foundation rules do not allow any donations from government funds.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Abdul Sattar Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi also thanked the Indian prime minister and clarified that taking funds from governments is against the foundation’s policy and added that he would be very pleased if the Indian prime minister would spend the amount offered for the welfare of the deaf and mute citizens in India.
